We are flying out of state for a wedding on Oct 31st. Needless to say the bride and grooms favorite holiday is...you guessed it, Halloween. Although dressing up in costume isn't required, it's encouraged.
Halloween is not my thing at all. Sure, I love to pass out candy and can't wait to dress up my DS (13 months) for his Halloween celebrations, but I've never been a big costume person. In addition, we are flying there so *if* we were to dress up it would have to be something portable and easily fit into our luggage (which will likely be packed to the max with 3 of us flying out for 5 days).
Any suggestions?
And while family costumes would be perfect, our DS is NOT invited to the wedding so he will be with someone during the event. This just further bums me out since this is his second Halloween, but first one that he really can do anything since he was only 45 days old last year!

I suppose you feel you need to be more creative than ghosts via a couple of sheets with holes cut out for eyes? It would be easy to pack. Or maybe you could do something along the line of a toga party style outfit. Again sheets wrapped creatively and belted with some sandals and leafy crowns?
Can you check to see if there is a costume rental place near where you are staying and rent something rather than carry it with you?
I hate wearing costumes and this would just be a royal PITA wedding for me to attend. But most are anyway. sigh.
Good luck.

I don't get the whole Hallowe'en thing other than it is fun for kids to dress up and hand out candy.
I would dress up really nicely for the wedding. Your "costume" is "An appropriately dressed couple attending a Wedding". I wouldn't get stressed out about it.

I love Hallowe'en! What about finding a period style dress you could wear... like a flapper dress, or something like that? It would be cute, you'd be in costume, and dressed up for the wedding, too!

The couple from Dirty Dancing. Morticia and Gomez Addams. Raggedy Anne and Andy. Woody and Jessie from Toy Story. Curious George and the man in the yellow hat. Wayne and Garth from Wayne's World. Peter Pan and Tinkerbelle

I would probably do a costume that looked wedding-y - maybe a flapper costume (20's) or a princess. As long as you don't try to do a physically large costume, it won't take any more room in a suitcase than a dress and a suit.
FWIW, Alison's first real Halloween (she was only 12 days old for her first actual Halloween) still wasn't that great. She wasn't really old enough for trick or treat, and on actual Halloween night, there aren't a lot of activities for little ones around here. We basically dressed her up and took pictures. Fabulous pictures, mind you - some of my favorites. On Halloween night, she refused to put her adorable fairy costume back on. I finally talked her into dressing as a "mommy" by putting on a dress and pushing her new babydoll in a stroller. She lasted all of 2 houses before she was ready to go back home. So, as far as Halloween goes, I would try to find a trunk or treat at a church or something the week before Halloween and let that be your celebration with your kiddo.

among the college kids a Victorian inspired steampunk outfit or a ren fraire type of outfit are popular "dress up" costumes. Any period style of clothing would work well too. It won't take up more room than a suit and dressy dress.

You would be an adorable flapper and your husband could wear a suit, maybe with a bow tie. You would be dressed up for the wedding and it would still be costume.

What a PITA. What about a top hat fascinator? I saw them at Target. As far as Halloween goes, dress him up for the family that will see him. My favorite pictures of my DS at that age are carving pumpkins. We cut the tops off the pumpkins and let him pull out the guts. The expressions on his face is priceless! Disgust, then interest, then trying to eat the pumpkin.

Pyramid Collection has great costumes. Anything Renaissance would be appropriate. Then you'd be all set for the next Renaissance Faire in your area.

I would probably Google costume rentals in my area to make sure we looked nice. A good rental will probably cost the same as new costumes from a party store, but you'll look better. I love the idea of period clothes or a flapper. No blood or gore, or heavy make-up though--I think that would ruin pictures, unless that's what they're into...

Would dressing up as a bride and groom be too passive aggressive?

What about a cute vintage dress ala Mad Men and your husband can wear a suit and slick his hair back. Uniquevintage.com has some cute ones and lindybob on amazon has some too.

Not sure why it's annoying... I think it's a lot of fun! I did a wedding a few years ago that fell on Hallowe'en and it was the best wedding I've ever been to. The costumes were a lot of fun and really set the mood. I guess I don't really understand why people don't like to dress up and have fun. I think the bride and groom have the right idea.
The flapper idea is a good one or anything with a vintage twist. I would just pack one of my Victorian dresses put up my hair and give my husband an appropriate tie and hat. Easy peasy. Oh and gloves. That has to be easiest, though maybe somewhat boring. But it will travel well.

I'm someone who adores Halloween so not getting the hate but why not just do a festive outfit with an over the top mask. I've been seeing incredible stuff on Etsy.

Since I don't own any Victorian (or other period) dresses, and would have to go out and buy something specifically to dress up in for BOTH myself and DH, pay to fly to the wedding, pay for the hotel, pay for the sitter, and pay for the gift, I may not feel like spending a bunch more on a costume nice enough to wear to a wedding. I guess that's why I would think it's a PITA. I hope the wedding is a fun time. It certainly sounds like it could be if everyone gets into it. Expensive, but fun.

Put on suits. Carry brief cases and file folders. You can be the divorce lawyers. Bonus points if you can find court forms for their state online and print them out to put in said folders.

This workability my thought- dress like a couple that just flew in for a wedding and lost their luggage. Or maybe like Mad Men, you could go Pan Am style .

I love unique vintage, I got my wedding dress from there. I also get tons of compliments on the pieces I've gotten there. Total thumbs up for the Gatsby look, it can be worn again in a fancy dress night, not just for Halloween. I wish I had friends that were that fun!

I think a key here is to consider it first a costume party. The wedding aspect is somewhat secondary. You need a costume "nice enough" for a costume party but not necessarily "nice enough" for a traditional church wedding. It doesn't have to be a vintage period dress... or any dress. Most people have long forgotten things in the closet that will let them pull off a hippy, gypsy, cowboy, hobo, princess, used car salesman type of costume without much need for buying an expensive outfit. Wear what you had planned to wear to a wedding. Do a sugar skull inspired face paint and there you are in costume! Or wear your normal wedding clothes and buy/make a masquarde mask like mask ideas

I hope you manage to enjoy it! My niece had a Disney/cartoon themed wedding and my husband and I went as Fred and Wilma Flintstone. It was the best wedding we have ever been too. Everyone was so relaxed and playing up as the characters, great fun. My husband and I do not like fancy dress or putting ourselves out there at all but we had a ball.

I'm already flying out there, renting a car, getting a hotel room, finding childcare for my DS who wasn't invited to the wedding, etc and now I have to buy a new article of clothing for a costume.
I guess what also bothers me is that most of those cute flapper type dresses or even some of the vintage ones will look good on someone much smaller than me. I'm still packing on an extra 25-30 lbs post baby so I'm not comfortable in my own skin.

Love the idea of the Lawyers - lol!
What about something as easy as lumberjacks, farmers or hobos? Easy with oversize flannel shirts and jeans, things you might already have in your closet or could purchase at Goodwill!

A friend of ours got married on Halloween. His mother-in-law dressed as a witch. He says that should have been his first clue...
