I am nearing the end of the market season where I have been selling my home made goods. I am also getting ready for the Holiday Craft and Vendors shows I signed up for. I would like to get rid of some of my older items to make way for new ones and was thinking of putting some items on clearance, but here is my question, if they do not sell do I keep them at the clearance price at the craft shows?
I just kind of want to talk through this with others that have done it, any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

I'll be following this thread. I'm getting ready to do my first (and possibly only) booth in a couple of weeks. I am very adamant that this will NOT be a business, for a number of reasons, but would like to do one a year or so.

If they have not sold thus far, andyou want to get rid of them then I would keep them marked down.
How much is it worth to store them and keep hauling them around?

Oh - to answer your question - I think a clearance basket/rack at the craft show booth would be just fine, and probably a good way to get rid of things.

I think once an item goes on clearance, it stays on clearance, especially if you sell online and have good local customer base. I go to a lot of craft shows, I think having a discounted rack/table/box is a great idea.

There are a lot of people (like me ) who will buy something marked clearance just because it's marked clearance.

I have a couple of friends who love a bargain so they would be sure to look at your sale items if the rest of your booth caught their eye.
Have you considered a special such as buy 1 get one a certain % off or 2 or 3 items for a special price? If the items are kind of similar so the customer could pick out 3 they really like that might help to sell more. The only problem is I've sometimes seen 1 item I like, but not 2 or 3 so I've walked away rather than pay full price for 1 item. I'm sure it would depend on what the items are and how expensive they are. It might be easier to do special pricing on 3 Christmas ornaments than say a big wall sign.
I hope it goes well and you sell lots of items!

Once on clearance it stays on clearance. Clearance items are things you want GONE as is not wanting to pack them up and store them at home. As such, they would be priced pretty low. If you want to just have a sale, and mark it as a limited time only, then those items return to regular price after the sale is over.

as a customer, the only thing I would wonder about is if certain items on clearance are the same TYPES of things that you also have full-priced. (if that makes sense.)
I would maybe question 'why is this one more expensive than the one on clearance?' but if it's clear that the clearance items are "last year's items" or something like that, I would understand.

I think cecilia sells hand made items- maybe she'll see this and give advice. As a craft show browser, I think a discounted items basket is a good idea, too!

I’d call a clearance basket a “last chance” basket. As in, you have a limited quantity and these items must go, rather than a basket of items no one wanted. And yes, once they are marked down, they stay that way. And if someone was on the fence or buying for a lot of gifts, I’d make her an offer on those last chance items and get rid of them.

I didn't get where you currently selling, but if it is online, then the craft fairs and vendor shows present a different audience and because of that, I would start the items back at regular price to check out the newer clientele. If after a short while you think they will not sell, then remark for clearance.

I like the idea of a “last chance” basket and if asked, I would say that I will no longer be making that particular style, size, or whatever distinguishes it from your current materials.

Thank you everyone. I was thinking the same thing as you all are saying, just needed to hear it from others.

I’d like to see what you sell! I made wooden decor & wreaths to sell at craft shows back in the early 90’s. I had a lot of fun doing that.

I would label the basket of merchandise "show special" that way people think it's discounted for the show and not leftovers.
Whatever you decide to do, good luck!

When I moved last year, I sold a majority of my painted items CHEAP at a yard sale. I didn't want to move it. I also donated the majority of my bracelets to a nursing home.
I have been making things for the local Arts and Crafts fair the volunteer organization I am in puts on. I priced most of what I made like they wanted for the sale. Whatever I don't sell I will set back for next year. I have some things I will put in flea market booths. The things I made and don't want to sell I am donating to animal shelter rescue thrift store, a nursing home, or putting in stockings. (The volunteer group I am in makes Christmas stockings for needy kids).

Just put clearance items in different packing or individually priced not a %off or something if your going to have a ‘clearance’ Basket. I can’t tell you how many people try to take a new, hot selling item and slip it in the basket & demand clearance pricing.
