Another warning, there may be a completely ridiculously obvious answer to my question so this is your chance to back out before eye rolling commences.
We have a convection oven, do we really need an air fryer? Will the food be crisper, taste better, need less oil? I know it won’t use as much energy, and the oven doesn’t heat up our kitchen. We were gifted one, but I stored it on the floor of my pantry and the Clorox I stored above it leaked onto/into the fryer when it tipped over on its side. Lovely.
I don't want to collect appliances, but we are trying to eat healthier so am willing to replace this one if the food will taste that much better, or be healthier.
eta: We do have an Instant Pot, no I haven’t learned how to use it years after buying it. But I am determined. Is on loan to BFF right now but I am getting it back on 13th! Anyway, I mention this because I was looking through old threads on air fryers and someone posted the Mealthy Crisp Lid and I am considering that option instead of a whole new appliance. So any feedback on that would be great too.

I have a convection oven and have opted not to get an air fryer. The air fryer *may* do some things a little bit better, but overall is much more limited than the convection oven. Anything I could do in an air fryer, I can do in a convection oven and I can do a lot of things in the convection oven that I couldn't do in an air fryer. I too do not want to collect appliances, so nope to the air fryer for me.
I have a Breville SmartOven and love it.

I had an air fryer, got a convection oven, got rid of the air fryer, then had regrets and bought another air fryer. I like that I can do small batches of things quickly without turning on the whole oven. For example, one piece of garlic bread

The small one is the one that would take care of the same jobs as an air fryer.

Can you think of a benefit for that? Was it just a size thing that made you regret getting rid of it?

I like my air fryer because I can make smaller batches of things and not have to wait for my oven to heat up. The air fryer gets instantly hot and cooks the food fast.

I already have a full sized convection oven but it will heat up the house, plus it takes longer to heat up. The air fryer heats up instantly and is great for when we want something quick. We liked the one we got for the house so much that when Costco had the Cuisinart countertop air fryer / convection oven on sale for $129 a couple weeks ago I bought one for the cabin too. That one’s really nice because it will air fry a family sized quantity of whatever in one batch, again without heating up the whole house.

Oh, we definitely can tell the difference, even my 9 yo likes the air fried food better. The food coming out of the microwave is mushy whereas the food coming out of the air fryer is crispy, especially things like fries or chicken nuggets that are supposed to be crispy.

I have a convection oven that I love, so I haven’t joined the air fryer group either. It does the same thing, and I rarely need to make such a small amount of something to justify buying another appliance. My oven can do more, so I’m Sticking with that.

If you like your convection oven and it doesn’t heat up the house then you probably don’t need one.
I hate my convection oven (the loud fan continues for 15-20 minutes after I’ve turned off the oven), and it does heat up the house. Even here in Seattle where it doesn’t get that hot it’s unpleasant in the summer (and we don’t have air conditioning). I do a lot of small batch cooking so I find the air fryer convenient. If I had a counter oven (convection or just toaster) I might not also have an air fryer.

Aside... one extra thing I like is I feel comfortable with Ds Using the air fryer but I won’t let him use the oven unattended.

I just realized why heat isn’t a problem. We keep our house at 64 degrees these days otherwise the upstairs is just too dang hot. And our kitchen is pretty large so I bet that’s why we don’t notice it. We were considering moving to the PNW a while back, and I was so surprised at the number of houses that didn’t have a/c! I absolutely could not function without it.

I looooove my air fryer because it is so efficient and easy to use and clean. I make chicken tenders, bacon, green beans, breakfast sausage, heat up leftovers, fajitas, kabobs, even steak and pork chops! My oven is just a basic oven not convection so this was a perfect addition to my kitchen. It heats up instantly and cooks things fast and crispy like I like them. I love that it is small and I’m not heating the whole oven to make 3 slices of bacon. I might not have wanted it if I had a countertop convection oven, the Breville is on my Christmas list. But I use it all the time and especially all summer when it was too hot to use the stove!

My BFF got the Cuisinart air fryer for a smoking hot deal after I had bought the smaller one that I have at my house. After seeing hers I wished I had seen the Cuisinart first because it’s a little bigger and the shape/size of the basket makes it more versatile. When DH and I saw that Costco had the same one my friend has, we talked about getting one for the cabin because it’s good to have cooking options that don’t heat up the house there. Then when I saw it was on promo for $129 I jumped on it right away because it’s been advertised at around $199 everywhere else. I’m glad I did too because when I was there today they were GONE.

I’ve read your replies and have been thinking about it, and I believe I’m going to look for a basket I can use in the oven to toss the food more easily than taking the pan out and turning everything. That’s what I think I’m missing by not having an air fryer. I wonder if they make them for the oven.

An air fryer is just a mini convection oven. The one difference is that the basket has holes on the bottom, so all sides of the food are cooked and browned at the same time. I'm sure there is some sort of pan that you can use in the convection oven that will give the same results. And if anyone knows of such a pan, please let me know. I never use the air fryer, but I like the results!

We have a full size convection oven, convection/air fryer/toaster oven, and a basket style air fryer. Sometimes I'm using all 3 at the same time. I was going to get rid of the basket style fryer when we got the toaster oven but I've needed to use both for the same meal several times now so I'm keeping both. I rarely use my full size oven for anything in the summer.
