We are looking to remodel our master bath, and will probably be in this house around 10 more years. We currently have a Jacuzzi tub that has been used maybe 10 times since our last remodel in 2003. We are weighing whether to install a non-jetted tub with the new remodel, mainly looking at resale. If we didn't install a tub, we would have room for a linen closet which we don't have currently and a sit-down vanity area between double sinks. So if you were looking for a house, would no tub in the master be a deal-breaker?
DS's bath does have a shower/tub configuration, so there would be at least one tub in the house.

The trend seems to be no bathtubs in master baths. I would want a soaking tub. I don't like jacuzzis. They usually make my skin itchy.
I personally would not care about a sit down vanity area. I have no idea if they are popular or not.

No. I would be happy without a tub in the master. But I think I’m in the minority. The majority of my friends use their tubs regularly.
We added a basic soaker tub when we did our master bath remodel. We took out the tiny closet and added a big shower, which wasn’t there before - we bought a house where the master only had a tub / no shower. We found room to create a walk in closet. It worked out well.
My girls have a tub in the bath they share. It was popular for the first 3 years in our house. It hasn’t been used in 4 years.
We don’t need a sit down vanity either but I wonder if that is an age thing? I don’t apply a lot of make up. I’m sure my mom would love a sit down vanity.

It would be a deal breaker for me. Doesn’t have to be jetted but I want a tub. I could care less about a sit down vanity.

I never take baths so my perfect master bathroom would have a huge walk in shower. I would rip out a tub as I find them dangerous to get in and out. My elderly mom slipped and broke her wrist last year getting out of her tub. I also like my vanity area where I dry my hair and put make up on. I watch a lot of HGTV makeover shows and the trend is large showers in master bathrooms and tubs in family baths.

No tub in the master would be a deal breaker for me. I don't want a Jacuzzi tub but a tub of some sort would have to be present. I love a long soak with a good book!

I would not mind, as long as the remodel is very nice. I do not have time to soak and like someone said it can be dangerous

It wouldn't be a deal-breaker, but it would be a factor that I would consider. I would not want jets, though, because I don't think they ever get really clean.
As an interesting (to me) aside, the tub in my new house has a little emblem on it that says it is a Jacuzzi Whirpool tub. Except that it is not a whirlpool tub and there are no jets. The bathroom has been completely remodeled and I can't for the life of me figure out why they left the Jacuzzi logo on the tub. It might be a Jacuzzi brand tub, but it definitely isn't a whirlpool tub.

We have just built a house and I took the bath OUT of the master bath that was in the plans. When we were looking at existing homes to buy, a bath in the ensuite was a deal breaker for me. They aren't super common here though so not many houses have them. Our last house we were in for 16 years and I did not use the bath in the main bathroom once. I think baths as you age can be dangerous anyway and I'm not about to start having them at 53.
I would go for what works best for you. If you are in there for 10 years a potential buyer then may want to update anyway.

Is there another tub? if so, I would remove it. I feel like the only people who really care about tubs are people with young kids who want to bath them in it. I would prefer a house at this point with NO tubs. (I mean maybe lots of ladies like to light candles and take a bath or maybe couples take a bath? I don't know...but I don't)

I take a bath at least 2-3 times a week, as a mode of relaxation. Having said that, I wouldn’t put in a jetted tub, just a freestanding soaker.
I don’t think I would use a vanity at all.

I think a bath is nice if possible. I recently had to do a soak for medical reasons and was glad there was one in the master. Our jetted bathtub is too big (wide) though and it takes way too much water and time to fill it so I would keep that in mind. We had a smaller tub in a previous house and it worked better. I would prefer storage between the sinks rather than a makeup spot but if you would use it for the next 10 years, install it and enjoy it!
We also have a large walk in shower which is nice except the walls don't go all the way to the ceiling because the ceiling is vaulted. It makes it too cold in there in the winter for me so I end up running a portable heater in the bathroom before I shower a lot of the time. I miss a steamy enclosed shower especially when I have a cold.
I also wish there was a plug in the bathroom on a regular wall so a heated towel rack could be installed. The only wall plugs are on each end of the vanity. Loved the heated towel rack when we lived overseas!
Good luck with your renovation!

For me I’d prefer a well appointed, spacious shower, no tub, and lots of storage space. As long as there is another tub in the house. And I would use the vanity, with lots of drawers, one of which I’d want large enough to hold a hair dryer and styler, with a plug, and slots for safely putting a heated appliance in.

We just completed a major remodel of my master bath and bedroom, and replaced the old tub with a new, non-jetted Jacuzzi brand soaking tub. It is a must-have for me. I love my baths and take one almost every night. A dressing/makeup table would just take up space and would likely end up as a dumping place for clutter.
We do have a separate stall shower in the master bath which Dh uses.

I’m a bath person and I do NOT want to take my relaxing bath in my kids’ bathroom. Tub in the master is an absolute for me.

our master doesn't have a tub, our hall bathway does. it's not a deal breaker for me, because tho i like soaking, we have a hot tub. a sit-down vanity, to me, would be worthless and an eyesore because of the big empty space where there could've been cabinet space.
so, yes to getting rid of the tub, no to the vanity.

I have taken one bath in the 2.5 years we've been in this house. So no tub for me. If you don't have a linen closet in your house, I'd put one in there. A linen closet is important to me.

I think no tub in a master bath isn’t uncommon. As long as there is a tub in another bathroom I think you’re okay for resale. Especially if you put in a big zero entry shower. This ages with you when tubs become dangerous.
The sit down vanity is a dated concept to me as well as wasted space.

If you will be in the house for at least 10 more years do exactly what you want to do and enjoy it Who knows what will be popular or trendy then..... Enjoy what works best for you

I would LOVE a deep soaker tub. I don't need a big huge thing, just deep. That is in our plan for master remodel.
That being said, my ILs just finished their remodel of their master bath. It was a large room to begin with, had a giant corner jacuzzi tub, I swear you could have easily fit 3-4 people in it. Separate (small) shower, 2 sink vanity. Everything was ripped out. Now there is a sit down vanity where the shower used to be. Where the tub was is a HUGE shower with 2 benches. Now you can fit 4-5 people in their shower. But it is beautiful and amazing. They never used the tub and hated how small the shower was, so this is perfect for them.

I’m not a bath person so not having a tub in the master is a bonus for me. I personally love the idea of a vanity.

We already have an enormous shower, so enormous that we want to scale back the size a little. If we didn't do a tub, we would have ample room for lots of storage, including a linen closet. The sit-down vanity is a desire of mine since I have chronic pain issues that often strike when I am standing in front of the current vanity putting on makeup, doing my hair, etc. and I often end up sitting on the corner of the tub or on my bed to put on makeup, because sitting helps with the pain spasms. So I guess maybe it is an "old lady" thing. Thanks everyone for the input.

No. It wouldn’t be a deal breaker for me.
I am getting ready to do a remodel of the master bath, as well. I would love a soaker tub, and a beautiful walk in style shower with different textures. Love the square ceramic tiles mixed up with rectangle plank tiles, and such. Having said that I simply don’t have the room in my bathroom for both. It is currently a combo shower/tub that we have. I’m not giving up on both wants so I will pick a beautifully done walk in shower!!
I think trends come and go. I’m sure people out there love their jetted tub/jacuzzi, but when we list homes it doesn’t help their value. So in 10 years what you do now may not help your value. That is a little bit of a stretch for worrying about resale. If you say in the next 2 years then yes I’d worry a bit more.....but not 10 years.
(The linen closet is a plus as storage never goes out of style)

We ripped out a huge garden tub to install a huge walk-in shower. We took the old shower and turned it into a nice linen closet. I love the bathroom now, and even though we will likely sell and move in a few years because of stairs being an issue, I think it won't hurt resale value. Around here, showers seem to be the way to go. I personally hate baths so a tub is a waste of space. We are keeping the tub in the hall bath for resale, though.

Nope, I don’t need a tub of any kind in my master. I almost never take baths. I love a large, tiled walk-in shower though. The vanity with a seating area would be a huge waste of space for me since I maybe wear makeup once a decade. I would much rather have more drawer space to store things between the sinks which is what we currently have.
One of the things on our “must have” list when we were house hunting was double sinks in the master. That one would be a deal breaker. We had one tiny bathroom with one tiny sink in our last house and it was a PITA when we both needed to get ready at the same time. I also tend to be less messy on my side so as a general day to day rule my sink is always cleaner than his. Every so often I go over to The Dark Side and clean his sink too because I can’t stand looking at it anymore. (He apparently doesn’t know how to rinse his splattered coffee remains down the drain in the kitchen either, but that’s a peeve for another day, LOL.)

I don’t want a sit down vanity area, I think they’re a waste of space. I stand to do my hair and makeup, and have never been bothered by that. But I do love my big bathtub. We happen to have one with jets, but I don’t use those. But the tub is the biggest I’ve ever had and love it. Just used it last night
