We're having granite installed. Yesterday was bathrooms and today is kitchen. Our granite has a polished finish. When I lean down and look at the surface from an angle, I see pock marks, tiny divots and what look like tiny stab marks from a small pointed object --like a ball point pen or smaller. Does this mean our granite wasn't well sealed by the installer?
Are the "marks" in the finish normal or should it be visually smooth?? I am so torn up over this because the whole process has been so difficult and expensive. We went with an installer that got rave reviews for how skilled and artistic he was and how much he guided the process. We've been working with him the past month or so on our granite and we haven't seen any of those qualities. He provided zero help in arranging the templates.
Now, I don't want to have a surface that isn't properly sealed. I've never had granite before so I don't know what should be expected.
Thanks.

The surface of our granite is smooth. No tiny holes or pick marks. The edges though, are pretty rough.
If you hired your granite person on the basis of the qualities you have listed, it might be worth it to mention to him how disappointed you are that you received none of the same care as previous clients. I would be pretty ticked off about that.

Depends on the type of granite and can vary from slab to slab of the same granite. Some varieties and some slabs have more irregularities than others. So that part is probably fine. The sealing is actually absorbed into the top layer of stone, so it doesn’t sit on top and smooth out irregularities.

Maybe it wasn’t polished enough?

I meant to add that it feels perfectly smooth even though you can see the inclusions at an angle.

It depends on the type of granite you have. Our granite has little marks as well, but it's pretty well hidden because it's a busy pattern and a darker color. I will say that despite the imperfections, it is pretty sturdy and the only chip I have is near the sink from a pot banging into it.

I have a couple of places where the granite has a lot of crystallization and there are small divots. Trying to polish down to get rid of those spots would have taken forever as well as resulted in a thinner slab. The sealer seeps into the surface, it doesn't sit on top. I've had my granite for 15+ years and have had no issues with any of it.

Ours had a couple of divots I noticed after it was installed. I called the installer and they sent someone out to fill them. It took maybe 20 minutes. If you have just a few that would be the way to go. I don't know if that would work if the whole surface was like that.

Our granite is 20 years old now but the parts that haven't been used a lot are smooth, almost glass like, but the parts that have been used have the little holes like you mentioned. I think the previous owners used a cleaner that's not for granite. It is possible to have them put a type of sealer on that is more than what you can buy in the store to fill the holes in. I can't remember what it is called. It is expensive so I haven't done it.
We had new granite installed in our bathrooms recently and it does not have more than an occasional spot where it is not totally smooth.
I would definitely ask them to put more of the filler sealer on your counters so spills don't end up in the holes and make them even bigger or make you sick from salmonella, etc. It would be expensive to deal with later.

I would definitely call your installer. If that’s a natural feature of the granite you chose, that should have been discussed. Hopefully you can get it filled like Peal did.

No it's not super smooth. We can see variances in it

Ours looks smooth from a distance, but up close and at an angle you can see the little holes like you mention. It doesn't bother me. I've had it for seven years now.
