Find some Jewish friends to hang out with??? I find humor to be the best medicine. Well that means Chinese food & a movie around here.

I am sorry for your loss.
I know for myself, helping others makes me feel better, useful, whole. Perhaps you can find a soup kitchen or something to help out at, then go away after for some quiet & reflection?

You have already gotten a lot of suggestions - I hope you find something fun for Christmas. I am biased, but love the outdoor/hike ideas. Sending hugs - these things are painful anytime of year, but it seems timing around holidays just amplifies the hurt.

Head down to Cabo. If you go before Christmas and plan to head back around the 26th you should be able to get some pretty great deals. Most people don't head down till after Christmas. We had one year that we came back the 23rd and there was only 1 other family on our flight - but they needed to get the planes back to take people down. It's usually really quiet till after Christmas!

When I read the title, before I even read your post I was thinking cruise. We are in SA too and have done several cruises out of Galveston, none over Christmas, but it an easy vacay from SA.

my husband and I choose not to celebrate christmas, but it is our birthdays (his christmas day, mine christmas eve), so technically we are celebrating, just not christmas. We usually hang out around the house, watch tv, make breakfast and dinner, and we will often go see a movie if there's something he wants to see playing. I actually really hate the christmas season / holiday so it's really preferred for me to just spend these two days hanging out with him.

He has decided that Las Vegas is probably his best bet because when he can’t stop thinking in the middle of the night we can just head downstairs and voila...instant distraction! Darn, almost had him sold for a Christmas in NYC with Wicked and a Steelers game among other things. But he makes a very valid and important point. Plus, we won’t have to buy cold weather gear. I don’t even own a jacket or a pair of gloves, much less an actual coat. Maybe 2 sweaters. But boo. We love cold weather when we actually get to experience it. Does no one do Christmas in Las Vegas? Because the hotels are dirt cheap. We are going to use the money we save to head to the Grand Canyon one day. Want to look into an (easy, short) hike. Anyone have a particular tour or rim they prefer? Ka by Cirque de Soleil is playing on Christmas and there are tons of fabulous restaurants to choose from. So once we get the go ahead from his therapist we will start booking things. Time to get into research mode, I know there are tons of Las Vegas threads here. I really appreciate all of your warm thoughts and good suggestions. DH asked me to thank you as well. We have a lot of ideas to try for our next vacation, and some new things to try super close to home!

Vegas gets very busy after Christmas until New Years. Christmas Day itself is slow in Vegas. I guess it depends on what you are used to, but I consider Vegas to be cold in December. Usually 60’s in the day, and dropping at night. For me, anything under 70 starts to feel cold, especially in the desert. Lol! I hope you can have an enjoyable and distracting trip!!

I am so sorry it is such a tough time of year for you. I strongly recommend going to Valley of the Fire State Park north east of Las Vegas, about 45 min away. Valley of the Fire

We’ll look into the weather, thanks! But if it’s in the 60s we probably won’t even bring jackets. It sounds lovely! I am so sorry it is such a tough time of year for you. If we go to the Grand Canyon on our own we might do a side trip there. If we go on a tour from LV, they all stop at the Hoover Dam. Which is amazing, but we’ve been there and we want to go somewhere new.

Sounds like a great plan! Although “money we save...” will prob end up in the slot machines 🤣 I think a hike sounds like the perfect addition.

But I’m not much of a gambler and he a) doesn’t do slots and b) is very disciplined when it comes to this. IIRC he has never even tried to go past the limit we set for ourselves, and mostly he wins a very modest amount. We joke that he wins back what I lose so we break end up breaking even. Sometimes his wins pay for our hotel. But he can make $100 last hours upon hours. If I’m not at the slots I don’t even last half an hour.

Short road trip? State or national parks near you? Not the same situation as you, of course, but when I first got divorced and my kids were at their dad's for a holiday, trudging around nature worked wonders.

I’m so sorry, friend. 😔 How about a theme park? I don’t think you’ll be able to avoid the Christmas decor, but maybe a ride on Space Mountain or something would be a good distraction. We are spending Thanksgiving at WDW this year and I am beyond relieved to not have to cook Thanksgiving dinner for the first time in 30 years. And I just bought our military park hopper tickets yesterday and made all our FastPass reservations. My Dh is beyond excited to explore both Pandora (Avatar Land) and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge that week. He is normally ho-hum about our WDW trips, but Star Wars and Avatar attractions are a BIG draw for him. The avatar ride, Flight of Passage is great. We also really like the quick service restaurant there for lunch. Have fun!

This is the 1st year since 2014 I will celebrate Christmas with my family. 2015 we spent it in the hospital with my daughter and after that we have traveled to Puerto Rico, Paris, and last year Las Vegas/Grand Canyon. I get how hard holidays can be and you are wise to do some self preservation and hit the road.
If you can’t travel far then plan a fun day like movies and getting easy non-traditional food like pre-made apps you just have to bake. Be easy on your selves and do what feels right to you. 💕
