Only if it blocked me from going where I wanted to go that day.....I'd be annoyed, but get over it and take a detour.
If this is really, really cranking you up, then you need to expand your horizons and worry about larger issues.

My only gripe would be that the church does not pay taxes for the street they are blocking, yet they are using city resources. In my community the churches are the first resource city offices call to assist citizens in need. The churches also have regular appreciation events for first responders.

No. But it annoys me when they close the highway for an entire day to film a movie.

As long as it was a properly permitted event I wouldn't have a problem with it. Here festivals have to pay fees for police and public works presence so the fact that they don't pay regular taxes wouldn't effect my opinion.

No problem as long as they treat all organizations the same way subject to all regulations. This. A little surprised preaching, worship music is allowed. And I've always been surprised when our church has gotten permission in the summer to have a service in the park, too.

How long are they shutting the street down?
I wouldn’t be upset about this. They shut streets down all the time for various events. Races, parades, Block parties, whatever.
I would be more annoyed if they didn’t shut it down and I had to be worried about hitting someone as I tried to drive my car through thatmess. I *hate* that situation.

sponsored event? In this case, organized by a particular church but others will be participating? The even will be held in the streets. Small town. Would this annoy you as a resident/tax payer? Just wondering if I'm overly peeved. Not Pea livid, but definitely a bit annoyed. While the church may not pay taxes other social groups like the Lions/Kiwanis, Women's league, City foodbank, lbqt groups do not pay taxes as a group either; the individual people who make up the church and other social organizations do all pay taxes, just like you. Just because a group believes differently than you doesn't mean they have to be treated differently. After all, you wouldn't want the city to deny a social group from having a gay pride parade because it annoys someone would you? As long as they are following the city protocol for getting proper permits ANYONE should have the right to close a street for an activity... or no one should be able to. Streets around here get shut down for the university home coming activities, various high school home coming activities, gay pride, veteran's day parade, a variety of 3k/5k runs, art/craft fair..... we just go around.

Churches do pay property taxes in most places. What they don't pay is business taxes but then neither do any of the other not for profit socially oriented groups that hold a 501(C) charity status. Historically the money collected by a church goes for property upkeep and returns to the community through charitable works. That is the same for all 501(C)s.

It wouldn't bother me in the least.
I live in a large city and it's frequently done. Streets are also closed for parades and other events. It's an inconvenience, but I can be flexible.

In the city I live in this happens all of the time. It makes sense when the event is large and will need the room to set up along the street. It is safer for guests. Why is is you are annoyed?

Our town square gets blocked off for a lot of things. I am not sure the churches have events but they do participate in every thing that goes on. Saturday is a chili cook off, We had the home coming parade not long ago. 9/11 (first responders celebration) closed down the roads for a few hours. I live in a subdivision that detours for all of that but I don't mind. These things really pull our community together. One church in our town has a youth center across the street from their chapel. It's not at an intersection and they were able to get a crosswalk painted so every Wednesday and Sunday they put out red cones to remind drivers "hey cross walk here". So that does stop traffic in its tracks. It's a little more inconvenient then road blocks because you can't go around it But again it's a slight annoyance since there's only a few kids crossing at any given time, To me, a crosswalk in the middle of main street where there is no intersection is odd.

Ok, I guess it's just me. And I'm not super worked up about it, it just rubs me the wrong way. I think because I've seen several posts from the city, the local paper etc pushing it. But it sounds like this is common and a legal use of resources. So I'll get over it.

I have no problem with it so long as they followed the proper channels in filing for a permit and the event will be conducted in accordance with city protocol.

I do not care as long as the correct permits were filed and paid. The Catholic School here does their graduation ceremony in their Church which is on a main road. They have a long standing agreement with the city that traffic both ways gets stopped for 10-20 minutes for the kids to do the cap toss.
I am more annoyed by religious groups being able to rent billboards to push their agenda.

If it's a known big event, no. If it's a special privilege given to the church and not necessary, yes it would.

Are other groups able to rent billboards to push their agenda, such as a theater group, Pride parade advertisement, or political parties? The rules are the same, and you are showing discrimination towards the religious group. You may not like them and you may not like the political groups that rent that same billboard, but if they have the money to pay for the signage and if their sign meets the approval of what is allowed, who cares who pays for the billboard.
