In the event of an emergency, could you take a leave of absence? One that didn’t qualify for FMLA.

My work is very good with me, personally, because I rarely call off. I could probably get away with a leave of absence. It would be very difficult for my employer however, and many of my coworkers (who call off more frequently) would be denied. I am a 911 dispatcher.

ETA: I have someone who could cover my job. I've been there almost 14 years and they would work with me after I exhausted all other options (FMLA and PTO). However, I might not be able to go back to my same job if I was gone too long. Chances are they would farm out as many duties as possible and have my backup take over all the rest permanently. I'm grateful that I am close to retirement because if it came to that, I would just retire.

Yeah, I could. I work for a 100% remote company and am able to do my job from anywhere, as long as I have my phone and iPad. We also have an unlimited vacation policy. Since it would obviously be short notice, I'd probably need to work at least a little, for at least a few days, to get things transitioned. Or, more likely (depending on the circumstances), I'd continue working but at a minimal level to ease the load on my coworkers. My hours are flexible as well, so whatever work I continued to do, I could largely do whenever worked for me given whatever was going on.

I have no idea what FMLA is. But yes, I could take leave in the case of emergency. Depending on the circumstances I could take Carers' Leave, or my 4 weeks annual leave, or the 6 months long service leave that I am owed. I also have 20 years worth of sick leave that I could use. Also, I could work from home if need be. I already do one or two days a week from home. One of my colleagues broke her foot months ago, and has worked from home every day since.

No, unfortunately. I’m working a new job that I’m really liking, but there are only two of us in our department and we’re really busy. I came from a department of 30 at my previous job, so I’m not used to being such a valuable asset at my new job . It’s very hard for me to get even a day off.

It depends on how long we're talking. Technically, I have unlimited PTO, but I only started here a few months ago and I wouldn't want to test the limits on that too much. They say we are expected to take around four weeks of leave per year, but we can take more if we want. As long as we meet our goals they don't care.

I finally do have FMLA.
But if no FMLA, I work for the State so I would probably be able to manage it up to a certain point. My old job where I was at for 20 years but no FMLA available, but they would have worked with me for an emergency.

I own a small bricks and mortar business. I have staff who could help take over, but we'd probably have to reduce our hours if I was gone for an extended period of time.

I could probably take a leave of absence but it wouldn't be paid. I don't get PTO, sick leave or vacation time.

Sure, but they only hold the position for six months. We can get into extended sick time after using 24 hours PTO. I a person doesn't have PTO to use first, those 24 hours are unpaid.

Yes. I'm currently frustrated with the guys I work for and am contemplating looking for a different job, but one of the most important things that keeps me there is how incredibly flexible my job is. My mother lives with us off and on and has a lot of medical appointments--they are completely fine with me coming and going as I need to accommodate her appointments. If I needed to be off for a long period of time I'm sure their preference would be for me to continue to work to some extent from home. I don't think they'd consider replacing me until it had been a lengthy absence and they were unsure of when I might come back.

I have flexible hours and can work most anytime I need to. My employer has been very accommodating in the past. I've taken time I accrued for my mastectomy & reconstruction, a mental health leave and a motorcycle accident.

Until 2 weeks ago I would have said "yes, I can take emergency leave" Then I needed to and the answer was no even though I have 35 days of vacation in addition to 30 days of sick leave (paid) on the books that I haven't used. I ended up having to put in for FMLA in order to get the time off I needed.

Depending on what the emergency is - Sick leave (self), carers leave (illness of other immediate family member), compassionate leave (death of immediate family member), annual leave, long service leave after 7 years service ... These are entitlements under the law but we can also take leave without pay.

Yes.
On a day-to-day basis my boss is fine with us working from home if we have a delivery or something.
Last spring my mom called me from the hospital and was in bad condition. My boss told me to go and he and the team would take care of everything at work. They did so, for 2+ weeks while my mom was in the hospital & hospice (she ultimately passed in May). To this day he has not mentioned how to account for those days in terms o PTO.

Yes, I could take time off. My hours are flexible and part time for the most part. I generally work from my home office with my dog sleeping on my foot. Often in my pjs with a cup of tea LOL. If I had to take a leave of absence, it wouldn't be a problem, there is another manager that can do my job for a while.

My situation is a little different as I work for very close friends of ours who own an auction house. The very nature of the work is variable. Some weeks I work 25-30 hours. Some not at all. Occasionally, I do computer work for the company from home. I'm flexible with my boss and try to set my schedule up to accommodate when he needs me. In return, I have great flexibility in taking off any time that I need. We try to work together to set the schedule for the upcoming auctions. We have found someone and trained them for when I can't be there, but he has to hold an auction anyway. I am very grateful to have a job I enjoy that allows me the ultimate flexibility. (I am strictly part-time with no benefits so there's no official PTO or sick leave.)

Yes my dd was hospitalized for 5 days when she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, I was off for the entire time no questions asked.
When ds was concussed and I wanted to stay home to make user he was off electronics I took two days no problem.
I get 4 weeks vacation so they could have told me to use some of that, but no they are very family friendly.
I normally work 8 to 4 Mon to Fri in a boutique law firm

In case of a personal emergency I could take the time off I needed and receive my full salary and benefits. In case of an emergency such as a tornado or other weather emergency I would be working extra hours, I work for the fire department.

Yes but that's because I work in my families business. There would be nobody to cover me but I could take the time off. It would just make us lose money.
