Fall is here (well, at least in MN...it almost feels like winter. )
What books books did you cozy up with this week?

I'm reading White Fragility for an online class I am taking. I am hoping to read the new book by Rick Riordan's The Tyrants Tomb

After a lovely weekend get-away last weekend, I came home to some chaos. So I finished nothing. I got about 120 pages read of The Fountains of Silence by Ruta Sepetys. It's great so far.
This week looks much calmer.

The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell
This one missed the mark for me. My opinion is in the minority as the book is rating very well on goodreads. It was a decent story but it was too long and it felt like a slog. I have read 2 other books by this author (Then She Was Gone and Watching You) that I enjoyed a lot more. Thanks for keeping this thread going every week. I don't post every week (slow reader ) but I enjoy it so much and get a lot of my rec's from here

Finished up the last two YA books from my school new book stack:
The Truth as Told by Mason Buttle was a fantastic little book. The main character is a 6th grade boy with dyslexia and a medical condition that causes excessive sweating; he is constantly bullied by the neighborhood boys. Complicating all this, he was the last person to see his best friend before his friend fell to his death from a tree fort. Enter a new friend and a school counselor who help him accept who he is and solve the mystery of his best friend's death. Very much in the vein of Wonder. The book was given a very low Lexile level-310 (don't get me started on how crazy some Lexile levels are!!) but the content is much better suited to 4th grade and older readers.
Pay Attention Carter Jones was also a good read. A family inherits a very proper British butler who comes into their chaotic lives and home and brings much needed stability and purpose. The plot sounds a bit corny, but the story is told with humor and doesn't seem far fetched.
Finally, back to some adult books. I'm 200 pages into Franzen's Freedom and enjoying it.

How Not to Die Alone by Richard Roper. A sweet book about loneliness and human connections. Lots of funny moments, but poignant ones as well. If you’re a fan of Nick Hornby and Jonathan Tropper, check this one out.

I'm waiting for "Lilac Girls" by Martha Hall Kelly to arrive at my local library from another library within the system. Another book set during WWII that was recommended by some coworkers of mine.

I'm in the final stretch of reading my almost 800 page book The Wanderers by Chuck Wendig and so far it's still holding in there as a great book. It's also bugging me how long it's taking me to read it (3 weeks so far) because I've got some great books from my local library sitting on my shelf waiting to be read. I hold my breath when I have to renew them hoping against hope that they won't be wanted back before I get a chance to read them. One of them is The Fountains of Silence by Ruta Sepetys that Gottapeanow mentioned. I'm a big Ruta Sepetys fan after reading her book Salt to the Sea a couple of years ago. I realize logically I should just relax because I can always just check them out again at a later date but you know how it is with us readers-we get greedy sometimes.

I just started A Boy and His Dog at the End of the World by C.A. Fletcher. It's a post apocalyptic story about a boy trying to track down his stolen dog in a mostly empty world. I like it so far.

Finished... Dream Daughter by Diane Chamberlain - I re-read this for my book club. I liked it just as much the second time. And I was able to catch more details this time than the first time.
Started... Things You Save in a Fire by Katherine Center - From the title, I was not expecting it to be the chick-lit that it is. But that's okay.

I'm currently reading Career of Evil, the third in the Cormoran Strike series by Robert Galbraith. Like! Also like the series and disappointed I only have one more to read. Hopefully she will write more. Last book was The Phantom Tree, by Nicola Cornick, a book with a little time travel, and imagines Mary Seymour surviving childhood. Also, using a book called Crocheting In Plain English, by Maggie Righetti, as a reference.

I liked Never Have I Ever! I started My Lovely Wife, but couldn't really get into it. I probably didn't give it enough of a try, only read 20 pages! I am now reading Her First Mistake - Sandi Jones. Just started but it seems pretty good.

I finished The Passengers by John Marrs. Eight passengers in self-drive cars set on a collision course and the public decides who lives and who dies. I really struggled to finish this book. Honestly the backstory for each passenger would have made a great book on its own but sadly you only get a snippet of each. I lost interest quickly over the debate of driverless cars. 2.5 stars. Now I'm onto The Dutch House by Ann Parchett. Just last week I was feeling so let down that I hadn't read a book this year that I really really loved, and then along came this jewel. I'm not even finished with it and I'm already giving it 5 stars. An added bonus - I'm listening to the audio version and it's narrated by Tom Hanks! TOM HANKS! I cannot explain the perfection. He is simply the best narrator I have ever heard.

I finished The Silent Sister by Diane Chamberlain about a month ago. "Riley MacPherson has spent her entire life believing that her older sister Lisa committed suicide as a teenager. Now, over twenty years later, her father has passed away and she's in New Bern, North Carolina cleaning out his house when she finds evidence to the contrary. Lisa is alive. Alive and living under a new identity." Liked, didn't love. Definitely not my favorite by her. 3.5 / 5 stars
I was about 70% through with Dear Wife by Kimberly Belle which I was enjoying, but my audiobook expired and I want to finish it that way so back on the waiting list I go....
I am currently reading two books:
1) Based on a review here, I purchased a hardcover copy (something I never do! Purchased for our camping weekend away) of The Only Plane in the Sky: An Oral History of September 11, 2001 by Garrett Graff. I am 65 pages in and loving it so far (despite the depressing, distressing subject matter).
2) Listening to an audiobook of Night Fall by Nelson Demille about the crash of Flight TWA 800. "Five years after it happened, the fate of TWA Flight 800 has been attributed to a mechanical malfunction. But for John Corey and his wife Kate Mayfield, both members of the elite Anti-Terrorist Task Force, the case is not closed. Suspicious of a cover-up, they set out to find the one piece of evidence that will prove their theory".

Two good ones for me !
THE REDEMPTION GAME (BK 3 OF THE FLINT K-9 SEARCH & RESCUE MYSTERIES) BY JEN BLOOD : 4 STARS Description: A local animal hoarder, her missing son and a condemned home filled with secrets are the main plots in book 3. Review: The first two books in this series, The Darkest Thread and Inside the Echo, both received 4 stars from me also. Always enjoy the psychic messages from the deceased in these books. Love how the characters continue to grow in each book. Lots of action in this book. Hope the author keeps them coming !
I WILL MAKE YOU PAY BY TERESA DRISCOLL : 4 STARS Description: It seems like an ordinary Wednesday, until the phone rings. A mysterious caller with a chilling threat. Journalist Alice Henderson hangs-up, ready to dismiss it as a hoax against the newspaper. But, the next Wednesday, the stalker makes another move. Review: This book jumps right-in without any "getting to know you". There's an unknown character whose story is very intriguing and kept me guessing who it was and how it connect to the main plot. The mystery kept building and I never figured it out until it was revealed. Well done !
Happy Reading to all !

I am reading Queen Bee by Dorothea Benton Frank. I usually really enjoy her books but this one is not my favorite. It makes me sad because she died recently and I want to love her last book, but I just don’t. It’s okay.

I’m still reading Becoming (really enjoy it).
Also reading Once Upon A River - curious if anyone else has read it. I’m enjoying it especially as a fall book.

Started the week with The Secrets We Kept. I thought it was ok. I usually have high hopes for Reese Witherspoon books, but was a bit underwhelmed with it.
Then I read The Dutch House. Actually I should say I listened to it and as posted above Tom Hanks is fabulous. Giving this book 5 stars. Last week I proclaimed I had read my best book of the year (The Only Plane in the Sky), but I’d like to amend that because this is my favorite fiction book this year. I absolutely loved it.

I read Once Upon a River and liked the second half much better than the first. I struggled with all the characters the first half so it took me awhile to settle into the book.

I read "The Recipe Box" by Viola Shipman (who is actually a guy and uses his Grandma's name as an author). A nice, light read about a young woman's struggles in finding herself, does she take a job in NYC as a pastry chef or return to the family bakery/orchard? Yummy recipes included!

I'm reading The Things We Can Not Say by Kelly Rimmer. OMG, what a beautiful, heartbreaking book. It's set in Poland during WW II. It also goes back and forth to present day. I haven't read a WW II book in a while because of how sad they are, this one is of course but the writing is great and I'm loving the story. I'm having a hard time putting it down.
