My father in law is 89 years old and has had problems with shoulder pain for many years. In retrospect he probably should have had surgery 10 or 20 years ago, but at this point it’s not an option. I’m not positive what his specific problem is – I know that his rotator cuff has been mentioned as a big contributor to his pain, and I don’t doubt that arthritis is part of it. He has been to more than one doctor about this, and different things have been tried – physical therapy, chiropractic, pain medications – with no real lasting relief.
He has expressed a lot of interest in trying CBD oil, and I’m trying to help him out with getting advice on how he should use it. I’m clueless. Google is all over the place with specifics. I stopped in a store that sells it a few months ago and the guy behind the counter was so vague on how it should be used.
So I thought I’d turn to the peas. Does anybody have any experience with using it for chronic pain? Topical use? Oral use? Or can you point me to a reputable website that would have good information? TIA.

When you go to the shop to get it, ask for one for chronic pain. I would get the drops that you put under your tongue as they seem to act the most quickly.
Hope he finds some relief.

DH has lingering shoulder pain after his rotator cuff surgery. he's used the cream, gummies and caramels. he says they work. the creams are all CBD but the gummies and caramels have a bit of TCH in them.

It definitely helped with nerve pain I was having with my sciatica. I did the drops under my tongue.

Do you use Facebook? There are several groups I belong to that have some very helpful information posted in them. It is where I found information on general terminology, micro dosing, what to look for when purchasing, recommended brands, discount codes and more.
If you’re interested I’ll post the FB groups names.

I tried CBD oil for migraines. I put a drop or two under my tongue. Unfortunately for me, it just made me super sleepy and it didn't relieve the pain. If the CBD shop near you is reputable, maybe go at a different time and see if a more helpful employee might be working.

I have a THC/CBD cream that my whole family uses. It works wonders. I pay $45 for a big jar of it. It doesn’t work as well as compounded 10% Voltaren. I would get him some of that in lipoderm. You don’t want the gel or the cream. Lipoderm is amazing.

Everyone is selling CBD these days. It's the hot new topic and cure all. The problem is because you can derive CBD from hemp this type of CBD doesn't have to comply with all of the cannibas laws across the country-it's legal. Take that, add any carrier oils you want (these are the fillers), put it in a bottle, stick a label on it and you can sell it as CBD oil. Consumers get confused and rip off artists are everywhere. There are many CBD oil products that are extrememly poor in quality. There are a few that are amazing in quality and really help with physical problems-the problem is how can you tell one from the other?
First note the difference between CBD oil made from hemp vs. CBD oil made from medical marijuana. The CBD oil made from hemp as noted above can be sold anywhere-I've seen it sold at my local pharmacy, because it's legal. Hemp is a legal product. Hemp CBD oil is going to be not as effective in fighting pain and treating pain as CBD oil made from medical marijuana as a rule. Now-every single person is different medically and this is true regarding CBD oil and medical marijuana products in as far as how well they treat pain. I use medical marijuana (MM) to fight migraines. I can use one strain and it won't work for me but for another person it might work exceptionally well.
I'm not sure what state you or your father in law live in. If it's a state like California or Colorodo-a state where both medical and recreational marijuana use is legal fantastic! That means your father in law (or even you) can go to a state dispensary where CBD oil products made from MM are sold. If your father in law is in a state where just medical marijuana use is legal than your father in law would have to apply to the state program and get approved and get a card for MM to be able to use the dispensaries.
Of course it is possible to try the CBD oil products made from hemp first and see if those work for your father in law if you live in a state where nothing is legal (either medical or recreational use).
I am part of a facebook group called MigraineBuds. It's for chronic migraine people who medicate with MM. They luckily have a list on their group site with trusted CBD oil products and some they don't recommend. I'll list those below:
Trusted CBD oil products: (from the Migraine Buds facebook group)-these are all in the USA
4 Corners Cannabis / Ambary Gardens / Ananda Hemp / Apothecanna / BlueBird Botanicals / CBDistillery / cbdMD / CBDfx / Charlotte’s Web Everyday / Dutch Natural Healing / Elixinol / Endoca / Every Day Optimal / Flora Sophia / Green Mountain CBD / Haleigh’s Hope / Hemp Direct / Hemplucid / Highland Pharms / Johnny Apple CBD / Kat’s Naturals / Lazarus Naturals / Lord Jones / Mary’s Medicinals / Myaderm / NuLeaf Naturals / Palmetto Harmony / PhytoFamily / PlusCBD Oil (+CBD Oil) / Populum / Phytodabs / Pure Ratios CBD / Receptra Naturals /Sisters of the Valley / Sunsoil / Vape Bright / Verte Essentials
Brands To Avoid:
These are known MLM (multi-level marketing) companies, those with low quality products, dangerous ingredients and histories of scamming customers. Avoid these MLMs and their aggressive sales “affiliates”. Question the validity of most reviews you see for these products as most are written by people who sell them. Hempworx PrimeMyBody/MyDailyChoice Kannaway MyClub8 GreenHoriZen Zilis UltraCell/Pur 7 Avoid due to low quality and use of dangerous synthetic ingredients: Diamond CBD Meta-Gen CBD Avoid due to subpar quality & online scams: Pure CBD, True, Miracle, Sky, Assure, Divine, Pure Med, Serenity, Isolate Direct, CBD XRP, Optimal Choice and Organix CBD. These brands have been linked to online scams that advertise a free trial but then start charging your credit card for as much as $90 per month. Any offer of a 'free trial bottle of CBD" where you just pay a small shipping fee is likely a scam as detailed here
I hope this helps. As far as taking CBD oil and products you can find a lot of information here leafly.com which is a site for MM. You can should also find dosing instructions of the bottle.

PS. I just noticed you're in Pennsylvania. Not sure if your father in law lives there but PA is a medical marijuana state. If your father in law lives there too he would qualify because one of the illnesses PA's cannibas laws covers is severe chronic pain that doesn't respond to convential treatment. Here in MD. that means any chronic pain you've had for over a year. For me that meant that I had to provide medical records that proved I had chronic migraines for over a year. For your father in law that'd mean just what you wrote in your post-he's tried various things over the years with no lasting relief.
You might want to seriously consider suggesting to him applying for his MM card in PA. I know at first it might sound crazy, but it really isn't. MM is for severe pain. CBD oil is certainly helpful but it doesn't work for everyone, and it doesn't help with all levels of pain. For my migraines it didn't touch my pain-I have to have the THC to combat the pain of the migraines.
If your father in law does get his MM card it doesn't mean he'd have to smoke pot. Far from it! They make THCA drops which is THC that is taken from the cannabis plant and the "high" part of it is removed. You still get all of the pain fighting benifits of THC without the high, and it's in a tincture formula so he'd just have to put some drops under his tongue. There are all sort of products that are available at a MM dispensary to help chronic pain patients. I'm 59 and I've been a MM card holder for year. My neurlogist actually suggested it for me. It's worked amazingly well for me regarding my migaines. I used to get a migraine every day or every other day. Now I'm down to 4-6 a month just using MM both as a preventitive and as an abortive for pain when I have one.

Thank you everyone for sharing your knowledge and experience. I feel like I now have a place to start in figuring out what FIL should try and how he should use it. Special thank you to birukitty for all the time you took in sharing your wealth of information with brand names and other info. I seriously knew almost none of this. And Restless Spirit, please do post the FB group names. Much appreciated!

Our budtenders like to get very educated about marijuana whether it’s recreational or medicinal. One store I shopped at the ‘tender had IBS and was able to discuss with a friend with Chrons could try based on common symptoms. This guy was very informed and used both recreationally and medically.
The brand I buy, MOTA is local and I mean my municipality a couple of blocks away close. I have asked about symptoms to my supplier and they give good advice. I buy either by delivery or online. They started this home delivery thing and it’s so convenient!
They make another product I bought with both THC/CBD but a lower dose and I just use it as moisturizer as it doesn’t do anything for pain. It’s a beautiful hand and face cream-either way I win! It smells amazing but has no treatment effectiveness. I won’t buy it again unless I want that hand lotion again. It is not the green balm.

Here are some groups I am in: CBD Oil Users Group* A large group, close to 180,000 members * A good place to start learning - go to their "Units" and you will find a lot of education, learning and general FAQ's They also have a list of recommended brands and discount codes here: CBD Product RecommendationsCBD Hemp Oil Users Education Group U.S.
*Almost 7,000 members *Active discussions about using *No selling, but... *Admin has a "co-op" where he takes order for 20% off (I believe it's Lazarus brand) I've never ordered CBD Oil Users & Education*Large group with over 155,000 members *No selling, No MLM, No Spam *It's fairly active, with people asking for suggestions for treating different conditions These are all good starting points for education and information. I have noticed that Lazarus Naturals are frequently mentioned and recommended in all of these groups, in part because of their price point, discount codes and CBD Assistance Program for Veterans & Disability. Once you find some brands you are interested in, I suggest you sign up for their emails to receive information on their sales and discount codes. I think I've only paid full price once when I bought a MLM brand. Hope that helps!

birukitty , excellent information. Thank you for being willing to type all of that out. What a wee vessel of knowledge you are. Thanks so much for the compliment. You made me giggle. It's funny to me-Just over a year ago (I got my MM card last August) I knew nothing about this subject. But I've made it my mission to learn and gather as much information as I can in order to help myself deal with and hopefully conquer the chronic migraines that have been my nemisis. On top of that I really do love helping people so I share the information whenever I can. I'm more than happy to help type out info to help another Pea (s). Helping each other is a big part of this board and I love it when I can do that. I know a lot of Peas have helped me over the years when I've needed help and answers. Power to the Peas!
