how do you take your dosage? My prescription has 4 pills and says take 2 and then the other 2 twelve hours later. In a discussion on this board earlier this year a couple people suggested taking the second dose 3 or 4 hours later instead of 12 hours. I am not sure whether to take both pills for the second dosage or take spread them out.
I'm icing and using abreva also.

I think you should do what the doctor said, which is on your prescription.

I knew someone would chime in with that opinion! Why would you not follow instructions that the manufacturer of the drug has deemed appropriate? I think it's asking for trouble to take the medication based on non-medical advice.

My husband has a prescription for the occasional fever blister outbreak. He takes 2 the first dose and then 1 every dose after until the fever blister is gone. He says it does lessen the time of the fever blister, but I haven't noticed much difference in recovery time for either of us (Yes, I take "his" prescription for the same condition when it's needed - feel free to slap my hand about that).

My dosage interval has changed quite a few times in most recent years when having the meds dispensed from the pharmacy. The current dosage (given this past summer) is two pills at the onset, two pills eight hours laters, then two pills the following morning and that's it.
My very first dosage instructions was two pills at the onset, one pill eight hours later, then one pill a day for the next five days.
You can always call your doctor if you have questions or concerns. I find the online portal (if offered) is great for something like this.

I take four 500mg as soon as possible then another four 8 hours later. Works pretty well. I still have the cold sore but it’s less painful and doesn’t last nearly as long.
