We live in a Navy town and one of my friends son is stationed here. We invited him to Thanksgiving dinner and now have about 10 young single kids coming to dinner.
Our boys will be around but we don't want to be lame or boring.
Besides a bunch of food - what should we plan?

I think they'll just be happy to have a home cooked meal and something to watch on the TV! Thank you for opening up your home to them.

This is amazingly generous of you!
I would have playing cards available, sports on tv, and maybe set aside some time before dessert to go around the table and have everyone share what makes their Thanksgiving at home memorable.

Make sure you have a football on hand - they might enjoy a friendly pickup game!

They like to eat a hearty meal and watch the football game while just socializing. If you have a gaming system set up on a different tv you'll find some of them like to game. But in general they are an easy bunch to please. Any sort of board or video game will find players

We hosted my dad's friend's son and his friend (Marines) one Thanksgiving. They ate, watched football, took a nap, and hung out in the backyard with me, my sister, and brother. We tossed the football around.

More food!
And when my son brought home some buddies on short notice, the soldiers (one was female) only had their uniforms on, so when they all went out into the yard to play some "touch" football, they borrowed sweats, t-shirts, sweatshirts, whatever. We had to borrow some larger sizes from a neighbor!
So, pretty much ditto what @sunnycalimom said, right down to the napping!

LOTS of food. I remember my DD who was going into the Navy (she had to leave though, medical issue) but she made it all the way till four days from graduation! Anyways, over Thanksgiving they were able to go to a school where families hosted Thanksgiving. They were just so thankful to get out in the real world, real food. NOT that you need to do this but they got donated gift cards and the families loaned out their phones so they could call home. (I am assuming these kids are past boot camp stage though)

My dh was Navy. Food and more food and snacks and more snacks and drinks and more drinks is how I prepared when I did this.
Thank you for thinking of the single Sailors.

Since you have gotten any ideas from the above posters, I won't add any more. I will say thank you from the bottom of my heart. My YDS is a sailor and will not be home for Thanksgiving or Christmas. He is choosing to stay and pet sit for his roommates and make some money. I can only hope that he is invited to other places to eat and not be home alone.

Oh, this is so near and dear to my heart! My dad was a 30-year submariner and would often bring single sailors home for holiday meals. It means so much to those young kids who are away from family ~ some for the first time. My dad would also volunteer for *duty* on Christmas Eve when my sister and I were older so the younger guys could be home with their young kids. Blessings to you!

In my teens we always had sailors over for home cooked meals. Thanksgiving and Christmas was especially popular. The guys just hung around, talking, working on their cars in the driveway, played games or whatever. This was on Guam in the 60's so no video games and only one station on the tv that did not play during the day. That was a long time ago, but I imagine it is still the same.

I can only hope that he is invited to other places to eat and not be home alone. Is he by any chance in the Norfolk area? I can't remember where he's stationed (maybe you've never said?). My two sailors there host a bunch of people to their home for thanksgiving and your son would be more than welcome to join them. My boys experienced these invitations themselves while in boot camp and A School in Great Lakes. They were always most appreciative of the churches and families who reached out.

Food and lots of it! Phones....let them use your phones to call home or if there are single day phones and you guys pick up the tab for them using them.
I like the suggestion of clothing for them to put on if they play outside. They may also want or like to change prior to dinner. Think of it, Thanksgiving in sweats and t shirts!

Thank you for having them all over! I don't have anything to add to what people have said already...snacks, food, dessert, drinks, TV (Macy's parade, football), a real football for tossing outside after food is digested). Notice how I listed "snacks" and "dessert" separately from "food"... lol. Definitely three distinct categories. And, once you think you have enough food, buy more. Especially pie. Personally I wouldn't make that many pies but if you like to bake it could be fun. But be sure to have more than you think you'll need, because you will need that many. lol -- And don't forget the whipped cream!

I was once a single airman far from home. I always appreciated being invited to share Thanksgiving with families.

I’m pretty sure you are going to need a truckload of food! 😄. My mother in law still talks about all the food she would make for her daughter and navy buddies when they would come home to visit. 😁💖

A lot will depend on if they are in basic training or just are just young. It’s my experience that they will have cell phones unless they are in the middle of basic training, so calling hopefully won’t be a big issue. Same thing with clothes, but that would be a great thing to ask about.
If they aren’t living in the dorms and have a small kitchen, sending home a few leftovers could be appreciated. It’s certainly not necessary, though! And with big appetites, you may not have any leftovers anyway.
Be sure to take a group photo—families like to see pictures!

DH served in the Navy for 20+ years. Thank you for opening up your home.
As for your questions: Don't plan anything. Have a ton of food, a TV and some games/cards/football if anybody wants to "play". Mostly they'll want to eat, watch TV and relax. lol

We like to see if they want to take leftovers home, so we try to have cheap to go containers on hand. But that goes for any gathering with my family. We always cook/have way too much food!

Thanks everyone!
I haven't thought of leftovers but we will get some containers for them to take things back if they want to.
They aren't in basic training but this is their first duty station so they are all young and I'm pretty sure this is most of their first real time away from home. We will try to make it as fun and relaxinag as possible.
