I have driven an Expedition for a long time. I am on my 2nd one. I have loved it. I drove an Explorer prior to that. We hit a deer Friday night in my car. Not a ton of damage but it's possibility that the cost of repairs will total it. So we are looking trying to prepare for something else if it comes to that. We have said my next vehicle would be something smaller. Has anyone gone from something of the size of an Expedition to maybe a Murano or Rouge or a similar size? I'm so used to the way the Expeditions sit up higher. Was it hard to get used to? We are contemplating an Explorer as well but looking at options.

I went from a mini van (typical sports mom) to a Rogue.. for the driver seats seems sorta the same... i guess it kinda is... i love my rogue most of the time... but i sometimes wish i still had a van when i have all the grands with me...

I guess it depends on how many seats you want.

I've never driven a big SUV, but I like my Kia Sorento. I think it's pretty good bang for the buck in a small SUV.

I guess it depends on how many seats you want. We are good with not having the 3rd row. It's nice but not necessary for the most part anymore. If we find something with the 3rd row but smaller than the Expedition, we'd be good.
I guess my biggest concern is how the Expedition sits up higher from the ground.

Do you feel closer to the ground?

You could always go with a mini van. You don't have to have the 3rd row up and you would have a ton of storage space.

I bought a Honda Ridgeline. It’s just the right size for the 2 of us. And doesn’t have that huge truck feel.

When we moved to Belgium, we shipped our Jeep Cherokee and sold my Town and Country mini van. I missed the hauling capacity of the mini van when we bought rugs for the house, but otherwise it’s been a good switch. The Jeep does sit about the same height as my van. We bought a small BMW hatch back here for touring around in the small towns and I hate driving that. I feel like I’m inches off the road and I don’t like not being able to see very far ahead.

I drive a 2003 Escape the majority of the time. We also have a new Subaru Outback. It does sit lower to the ground.
When my Escape dies, I am considering replacing it with a small truck. I drove a big F-150 prior to the Escape. Again, the adjustment to sitting lower to the ground was hard. I like the view of sitting up higher in a vehicle.

A friend of mine just got a Subaru Ascent. I rode in the back seat last week and was really impressed. It has a 3rd row and the middle row was 2 seats with a little aisle that lead to the 3rd row. Seemed to have tons of room while still roughly the size of a car plus since it was a Subaru,it is good in snow.

The older Escapes appear larger to me than the new models. DH has an 2019 Escape for his company vehicle. It is tiny on the inside and the leg room in the back seat is terrible. My two teens do not like riding in it because of lack of leg room.

While the kids were young we had an Expedition and 2 Yukon XL's. I love them and they served us well. Last year we finally downsized to a Chevy Traverse. I still have a 3rd row when I need it and plenty of storage. Of course it sits lower, but really it was an easy transition. The Traverse is a larger crossover and next time maybe we'll downsize even more. For now I'm loving the better gas mileage and the easier time with parking.

I drove Suburban's for 20 years. I downsized to a Durango, which I've had for a couple years now and I absolutely love it!
It is physically smaller so parking is easier. The pickup in it is sooo much better because it's lighter (and Dodges engine is bigger.) Has a 3rd row and the seating is comfortable in all rows. Easy transition because while smaller it's not tiny.
We also have several family members who have the Jeep Grand Cherokee and they rave about them.

I have never driven a big car or truck on a regular basis, but my DH has only ever owned pickup trucks so I have had to drive one every once in a while. I get what you’re saying about sitting higher up but for a short person like me, climbing up into and down out of that higher up vehicle is a PITA. The older I get, the more I appreciate being closer to the ground.
I drive a newer Escape and for the most part I like it but as I said, I’m short. DH is 6’ and tolerates it for grocery or other short runs but he dislikes driving it for any extended time because he feels that the driver’s legroom area is cramped even with his front seat moved all the way back.

We went from an Expedition to an Odyssey and 6 months ago we got a GMC Acadia. I love it. I feel like it sits higher than the Odyssey, but not as high as the Expedition. The Expedition & even the Odyssey are too big for us now. The Acadia is perfect for us now.

I drove an Explorer for 8 years, followed by an Expedition for 12 years. When it came time to trade in the Expedition I looked at several of the smaller crossover SUVs. I just couldn't make the switch to something that sat so much lower. I ended up with a Lexus GX and have been extremely happy for the past 5 years. A couple of times a year I miss the ability to haul as much as I did in the Expedition, but not enough to go big again.
Something we did that you might consider trying is to rent the car that you are thinking about buying. If you look around at the different rental agencies, you can usually find what you are considering. We did this on vacation, but also when I would have my Expedition in the shop. Doing that convinced me I wasn't ready to downsize that much.

We had a Honda Pilot and downsized to an Infiniti QX50 which is comparable to the Rogue. I like the smaller car-like size, but still have lots of hauling room and better gas mileage.

I went from a Yukon to a Lexus 470 SUV and didn't feel like I was too low to the ground. I loved my Lexus but ended up selling it and getting a BMW x5. While the BMZ is fine, it isn't as good as my Lexus.

LOL different strokes I guess. I dislike having to hoist myself into a truck! I think it’s much easier to get in and out of my Escape than his Silverado, and the new one is even higher than his old one. I swear I need a ladder to get into the thing.

crazy4scrapsThe ridgeline and Tacoma are suv height. You don’t really have to jump up into them. BUT you do need a step stool to get anything out of the bed of the truck. Now the Dodge Ram we have.... holy crap ....I need a crane to get into that.

Go drive the Sorento. I didnt at first but was surprised at how much I liked it. I have the SXL with the 3rd row and am in LOVE with my ride. The back seat folds flat easily, it rides more like a car, and the 3rd row is pretty roomy when you need it .

I have a Mazda CX-9. It’s closing in on 100,000 miles and I should think about trading it in but it’s the most comfortable car I’ve ever had. Lots of storage and a third row seat if needed. While it’s lower to the ground than what you are used to, it feels sturdy and safe when riding in traffic or on the freeway. Plus it’s good in snow, which is important in my area.

We went from an Explorer to a Lexus RX. We are on our second Lexus RX. It's the perfect size SUV for us because it still feels and handles like a regular sedan. We drove an Explorer rental a few days ago and while it was comfortable, it still felt heavy and bulky.

I went from a Honda Odyssey minivan(not a huge car but still highish in the seat) to a Cadillac crossover XT5. I’m 5” 4’ - not tall, but as long as I put my seat up as high as it can go, it feels ok.

We have a Chevy Tahoe and a Ford Edge. I don't mind the size of the Tahoe, but I really love my smaller Edge. It does sit lower, but still much higher than a sedan.
We set aside a Saturday to go drive everything we thought we might like. Be sure to check Costco pricing.

I have an Acura MDX and love the height , size...just about everything.
Our last rental car was a Rogue and I didn’t feel it was up very high.
