Open just a bit so my Siamese cat can have his choice of being in or out of the bedroom. He's the type of cat that doesn't bother with scratching at the door or banging it back and forth underneath with his paw. He just opens up his lungs and mouth and howls bloody murder until I let him in. Siamese cats have voices and boy do they know how to use them! Jesse uses his a lot, Biru didn't quite that much.

Like others, our bedroom doors have always been closed for fire safety. Plus I like a very dark cold room so I can have a window open all year round and not freeze up the rest of the house.

When it's just my husband and I at home, the door is opened through the night while we are sleeping. When the kids or guests are here, the door is pulled to but usually not all the way closed.
More importantly is just that it be dark. I hate sleeping with any light on.

It varies. If one of us goes to bed earlier than the other, we close the door to keep the light from the other rooms out. If we go to bed at the same time, the door stays open.

My dad was a firefighter when I was very little. We were taught to sleep with our doors closed for fire safety. I’ve continued the habit and taught DH and our boys to do the same.

Open, animals that come and go but my son sleeps with his closed. I’ve always had him sleep with his closed for fire safety/not wanting animals in with him (bad lungs).

Very interesting about the fire safety stuff and closed doors, I didn't know that!
Open door when the kids where little and now that they are all big closed. And also closed cause the cats like to sleep on me and makes for a very uncomfortable nights sleep! 🙄

Closed for fire safety as well.
I do think it's funny that some people keep it open so they can hear if someone comes in the house, I feel the opposite. If the door is shut it's another obstacle for them to get to me and theoretically I could get out the window by my bed before they got close enough once I heard them trying to open the door.

I have heard about the fire aspect, but our door is always open so an endless parade of cats can get on and off the bed all night long.

We have always kept ours open before during and after kids in the house. Also the dogs like to get a drink now and then. My parents always had their door shut, but my bedroom door was right next to theirs. My boys have lived in the basement since they were two.

I've always slept with the door open so I can hear my kids. Now that they're older, we have a dog that sleeps in our room so the door stays open so he can get in and out as needed.

I answered open so that I can hear what is going on. In my mind it is not only hearing if someone tries to break in/breaks in the house but more just basic goings on. For example my water heater (which is upstairs) burst one night. I heard the sound of water and woke up, it was bad but not as bad as if I had slept through it for a couple more hours. While probably not considered rational thinking by everyone, I feel cutoff and so unaware when sleeping with the door shut. And don’t even get me started on sleeping in a room with an AC on and the door shut.

We sleep with the door open. Unless it's the weekend and DS has mates staying over (which is pretty much every weekend) then I need to close the door so I can't hear them.

We always sleep with the door open unless we have guests. I hate feeling shut in and like the flow of air from the windows.

Generally open for the animals. I wish the kids would keep theirs closed for fire safety but the animals like to come and go into all of the rooms and the kids would miss them too much if they were shut. The dog wakes DD up when he wants to move rooms if her door is closed. The cat scratches at which ever door he wants into if they're closed.

If the door is shut it's another obstacle for them to get to me and theoretically I could get out the window by my bed before they got close enough once I heard them trying to open the door. If your door is just closed, I don’t see how you’d possibly have time to get out once they touched the door - it would take only a second to have the door open. If your door is also LOCKED, you might have a couple seconds more, although many interior doors in houses are hollow core and could be smashed in quickly. But then you are delaying someone being able to get to you quickly in an emergency. I understand the fire safety reason for having doors closed, and if I had children I would probably try to go with closed doors on their rooms. I choose to have the bedroom door open; in fact, I have a marble doorstop that keeps it open and the door has rarely been closed. I do not want to feel cut off from the rest of the house, and it was the same when my husband was alive.

I picked closed because that is what I prefer.
Reality is, the door is almost always open for most of the night. DH always leaves it open whether he comes to bed after me or when he leaves before me in the morning.

Closed, but not because of fire safety. I'm a light sleeper and the kids moving around tend to wake me up.

Opened! Because if not, it's too hot and stuffy to sleep in a closed room. I never can sleep when it's hot, I need cool climate in my room for wake up fresh.
