Not sure what happened to the rest of my post! I will normally take a nice bottle of wine (if I know they drink), or a box of nice European chocolates. If it is someone I know well, I will sometimes add a pair of dish towels that I have embroidered (machine) to go with the gift. If I have stayed with someone a few nights, then I also have a bouquet of flowers delivered after I have gone home. I usually gift a potted plant (can be small pot with a tiny succulent or two), a potted plant like an Amaryllis, Christmas Cactus, or Poinsettia. On behalf of people who are not house plant fans, please make sure your hostess actually likes plants! I don't care for them and always hate to see someone walk in with one. It becomes a burden to me (to either attempt to keep alive or get rid of), or guilt inducing when I kill the thing.

Some are also poisonous to animals, so I would be careful with what plants I’d bring into households with pets. Poinsettia and amaryllis are both toxic for pets.

When I went to dinner at a neighbor's recently I took a jar of locally made jam. I’ve also done English toffee from a local candy maker.
I’m not much of a wine drinker and can’t really say I know much about wine so I hesitate to choose one for someone else. Flowers are nice but they usually need to get put in water right away, even if you don’t take the time to arrange them more nicely. And some people are allergic. I wouldn’t do plants for the same reasons others mentioned.

I always bring something and people always show up with something. Not going to mention anything in particular, lots of ideas here already.

Chocolates Wine Nice pump soap (like for powder room) Cake server Salad servers Funny napkins Flowers Starbucks g/c This is another thing that seems to differ between countries. We would find some of those things on the list (while a lovely gesture) quite weird. Wine and chocolates maybe but everything else would seem over the top. I think we are much more relaxed about entertaining in general with most of the time people BYO drinks. The word host (much less hostess) rarely comes up at all.
This ad was genius marketing and they must have sold millions of boxes of these chocolates for this very reason. www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBjIaAd1xeY and the South African version www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcmQG9_DKSI do you have a similar campaign over there?

Paigepea lives in Canada - so, not over there as much as up there. I don’t usually think of Canada as being an over the top type of country. Flowers wouldn’t be seen as over the top in any place I’ve lived in the US - common actually - and I would be appreciative of any gesture, so wouldn’t blink at anything else on the list and thank the guest profusely.

I stopped taking fresh flowers when I myself became allergic and then aware of how many others are, and I switched to potted plants or succulents thinking that most people I know enjoy them. Thanks for this persepective.

I'm not saying I wouldn't be appreciative if someone brought something like this and would thank them genuinely but I would think it odd.

I get things at places like Home Goods. They have cute sets of for cooking items like oil/vinegar or olive oil dipping sets.

Always! Wine, chocolates/mints, flowers and if a big party I may bring home made breakfast bread to treat the hosts for the morning.

Since my husband started beekeeping, we like to gift some of our honey. This is what I will be gifting. We keep bees on our place for a beekeeper and get paid in kind in honey, so we have plenty to share.
