We always had a jello salad— Either orange jello with mandarin oranges and shredded carrots and pineapple OR LIME JELLO WITH PINEAPPLE AND CELERY!!! What happened to jello salads? I grew up with that as a staple! 🤣🤣🤣 They were never a thing in the UK. Thank god. They sound and look horrendous.

Ambrosia Salad. Always thought the name was weird. Didn’t taste as bad as I thought. My grandmother used to make it with fruit cocktail and then added the marshmallows and nuts. I don’t remember if she added coconut.
Forgotten Cookies. It’s a meringue cookie where you preheat the oven, turn if off and then forget about the cookies. I’ve tried to do this before with not so great results. I think I need to just buy egg whites. Thankfully my mom makes these well.
Dump Cake. Always thought that was weird too. But it tastes oh so good!

crazy4scraps , this Minnesotan has never heard of that grape salad. I know, right? I’m almost 53 years old and have been eating at potlucks all my life and that newspaper article was the first I had ever heard of it, much less seen it served anywhere or even a recipe for it. Now if they would have said that “hot dish” was the traditional Minnesota food, I would have totally agreed with that! ETA: The author of the article got a LOT of blowback from Minnesotans on that one, and I think a few other states disagreed with their determination for their states as well.

My contribution to these threads is always Velveeta fudge. It's a Paula Deen recipe (go figure) and she calls it Chocolate Cheese Fudge.I made it as a joke one time for my husband's work... and surprise, it's good! Very creamy and smooth fudge that doesn't taste like Velveeta at all. I've actually made it a few times at Christmas since that first time. I am going to have to make this! I don't eat marshmallows, but I really miss fudge, so I hope I like this.
I may have to give it a third name. Both of the ones above sound awful.

English Suet Pudding. Yes, it is made with beef animal fat. My late Mother-in-law made it every Christmas. It’s supposedly is an old family recipe passed down for many generations from England. Not sure about that. It is surprisingly good. My Grandmother made suet pudding every Christmas also. Now several of us cousins get together on a Sunday in January every year and make suet pudding while watching football. It gets better every year. My husband's grandmother made duck fat cookies every Christmas. She loved them. I thought they were okay, nothing I would spend the energy to make. ETA: I have the recipes for both if anyone is interested!

Green Slime Turkey
I make a fresh herb mixture that I slather on my turkey and let it marinate in it overnight. I put all the ingredients into my Vitamix to purée them into this thin paste-like consistency that is dark green from all the herbs. I put the washed turkey into one of those large plastic cooking bags and then pour in the mixture. I have to massage the bird through the plastic bag in order to get the marinade to completely cover it and then I flip the turkey over and massage it around again every few hours.
When my son was little, he started calling it green slime turkey. Truthfully, I can’t even remember the name that was on the original recipe and it has officially been called Green Slime Turkey for the last 35 years. My son absolutely loves turkey made this way and I make an awesome turkey soup the following day too. When he moved out of the house, that was the only recipe he asked for. He wrote it down as I told him how to make it and I noticed he put Green Slime Turkey at the top of the recipe, so I think it will remain with that gross name from now on. My son loves to cook and has used the slime sauce on a roast chicken too.

I always thought that strawberry pretzel salad sounded SO gross but I had it at a funeral luncheon and it's actually good. The word salad in the title is wrong though. Two things I can't come to terms with are that toffee recipe that starts with saltine crackers. HOW?! I know it's supposed to be AMAZING. And Mock apple pie that is made with Ritz crackers and zero apples but supposedly tastes just like apples. again...HOW? and Why?

I always thought that strawberry pretzel salad sounded SO gross but I had it at a funeral luncheon and it's actually good. The word salad in the title is wrong though.
