My car was acting wonky today. It's expensive tire/ shock thing ☹ BUT the mechanic showed me a pile of nuts stored in one the pumps (?) He said an animal lives in my car and is storing food!
Does that make sense to people who understand cars and/or animals? Google gave me a lot examples where the animal still lived in the car but not came and went
Just wanted to see if others had similar experiences.

I don't know about cars, but I can tell you we are on our fourth snowstorm this fall and the squirrels have been going crazy since the first snow hiding food in our garden. Almost every day, one of my dogs is in there and brings out a treasure. One day a peanut, another day a piece of melba toast, and another day we have the top of a burger bun. Cracks me up. Those squirrels need to leave their stuff in the yard without corgis.

Yes - DH runs into this sometimes. He restores old cars and he will find nuts, nests, etc under the hood. Most of the time, they have ate through the wiring so be glad that hasn't happened yet!

I saw a picture on the internet of an engine compartment filled with nuts from a squirrel 🐿. I’ve heard of others also. So your situation is not typical but not unheard of.

We had some sort of animal storing food in our van. It all started with a strange noise while driving, coming from behind the radio/heat control area. The noise got so bad we took it in to see what was up and they took pictures of a nest/nuts/nut shells in the fan area behind all the electronic stuff. Unfortunately, the noise didn't go away even after cleaning it out, but there was definitely an animal taking up shelter in our van. I later read that Toyotas use some sort of wire casing that is appetizing to critters, and this was a common problem. We no longer have that van.

Thank you for all the responses! I just didn't know what to think when he said that so I'm glad I caught it early before wire damage. Unfortunately, I don't have a garage--so not sure how to avoid future incidents.

We know a college student who didnt drive his car too often. He went to Meijer, came out after shopping, and realized that his car was on fire in the lot. The fire was caused by a squirrel nest under the hood

Yes we've had it happen, along with some small dead animals in there. I've heard putting mothballs around the car can help discourage shelter and storage seekers and, but I don't know that for sure.

Was it Tande who ended up with the mouse mobile? Yes small animals will take up residence in your car! Cats climb up on warm engines in very cold weather too.

Yeah, unfortunately cats will sometimes stash their kittens in the tire wells. My dad found that out.

Oh yea!! very common! Happens all the time up here. Mice like to make nests and store things under the hood, esp when it's still warm. We had outside cats, and the mice were carrying the left over cat food and storing it under the hood. Other people have had nuts, twigs, etc. They also like to make a nest of your air filter. I guess dryer sheets under the hood and glove compartments are suppose to deter them.

I had $1,000 repair bill last month due to a mouse. The mouse built a nest on top of the fuel tank, chewed through the fuel tank sensor wires and the fuel pump wires.

My neighbor was driving her minivan when the check engine light came on. Made it to the mechanic. Guy pops the hood and a squirrel jumps out! Had chewed through some wires too.
Makes me want to peek under my hood tomorrow!

I had a huge nest in my car. The bugger chewed up wires, and made a mess. It has been years, and no problem since then.

The mice used to build nests in my car when we lived in the country. We had to keep mouse traps in it. We still do now that we are in town cause where we park our cars is an area of mice and other critters.

Years ago I was at a car repair shop waiting for an oil change. A young woman brought her car in for whatever reason and all I heard from her was, "NO, I don't want it back! Burn it!" Apparently a mouse nest was in the engine (not even the mouse itself). My car was done soon after that, so I don't know what she ended up doing, but it was pretty funny.

Ugh. A few months ago we literally were driving a car to drop off for a trade-in we were doing and it was handling funky. Pulled over, and found something had nested, chewed up a bunch of stuff, and even chewed through some of the wiring. Effers.
We had to fix it before we took it in, because we’d already done the deal and signed the papers.

We’ve had it happen twice to our Toyota Sienna parked in our garage. First time, we ended up with a $300 bill to replace wires but luckily, no fire. 2nd time, just some filters needed to be replaced. We tried mouse traps in the garage and dryer sheets. Then a mechanic suggested Irish Spring in the glove compartment. Hoping this works
