I am noticing that many colleges in MN closed today and announcements were made yesterday. I think my daughter came home for Thanksgiving on Tuesday night all four years she was in college. Professors didn't necessarily just cancel their class that day but let them know ahead of time what the work requirement would be for that day.

I am a professor in Seattle and we would probably close with that sort of weather. It doesn’t sound like much, but Seattle is very hilly and doesn’t have enough snow equipment. Our university often makes closure decisions that are probably more reasonable for undergrads (who generally live on campus or within easy walking distance) than for graduate programs like mine where students are dependent on the roads. I had one day last year where the university didn’t cancel morning classes (although it cancelled afternoon classes) but I cancelled class because I taught at 9AM and when I was out walking to the gym at 7:30, the roads were just ice.

On more than one occasion, my cousin's daughter has shared an online petition to cancel classes at her college due to weather. Today the petition said that they should close classes due to the forecast of 2-4 inches of snow and they should let the kids go home for Thanksgiving. Now, I can understand that the students want to go home for the holiday and would love to have an extra day or two out of classes. But does it seem entitled for students to be demanding this? It really rubs me the wrong way. What do the peas think? do you know if they ended up closing?

What's she going to do when she has a job and they are calling for 2-4 inches of snow in the morning? If she wakes up and there's 4" of snow on the ground she better get her butt to work on time because her boss isn't going to shut down the company for that amount of snow. Same if the forecast is for that amount in the afternoon - the boss isn't going to send everyone home early for that amount of snow. Let her petition her boss to close because of snow and she'll find herself unemployed. College is a time to prep for a career. Petitions are a no-no. My former employer never officially closed the office in the 37 years I worked there. A few times we could take it off with pay, if we felt it necessary for our safety! But, we were not closed and there were always a few people there.

Ridiculous! I would love to have access to any list like that when hiring candidates as I would NEVER higher anyone that signed anything so stupid as that's just a red flag on them showing up for work.
Edited to add - I was specifically referring to kids wanting school to be canceled for 2-4 inches of snow.

I went to school in Iowa. I can remember going to classes when there were active snowstorms, where after the storm was over we had 8 or 9 inches on the ground. 2-4 inches? Please. I don't remember a single time during my entire four years that classes were cancelled for weather.
