~ Disclaimer: Not meant to make fun of people with any kind of disease or disorder that causes them to choke. ~
You're just bopping along through life and then you are just coughing and gasping for air, for no reason at all? Not eating, not drinking. Maybe you built up some saliva and were going to swallow but you took a breath?
My son just did that, and of course recovered, a little embarrassed. I've done it too. Felt like I was going to choke to death.
Wouldnt that be a really embarrassing cause of death?!

About two years ago, it started to happen to me randomly. Maybe about once every other month. It is really weird to have my mouth suddenly fill up with spit for no reason. I only choke if I am laying down.

I'm a serial barter from spit, and other things. It's embarrassing, to say the least. If I swallow wrong, have a cold with yucky drainage- I barf. I am worlds most prolific barter I swear, I can make myself barf just thinking about it. Of course people are horrified (oh my gosh, you are sick!) but those that know me know I just randomly upchuck. My kids don't even blink if I run off and throw up during a meal- they are just like, oh yeah, mom barfed again.
I've asked doctors but there is nothing wrong with me, just a sensitive gag reflex.
It was very handy to get out of stuff in school, I will admit!

Thankfully, after reading gryroagain's issue, I only choke on my spit!
(I have thought about being old and choking on my spit, developing pneumonia and dying.)

Yes but I also think it's hereditary, my husband and son do this a lot and according to my husband it comes from his grandma on his mother's side so they all choke randomly on their spit all the time in his family.

Yes, and i did it on a date! I didn't recover well and made this horrible loud burping sound. He didn't run for the hills at least. We both laughed ourselves silly. Relationship lasted 6 years so he must not have thought it was too disgusting. I can still remember every detail of it happening almost 16 years later!

Yes, more often than I care for. I have Bell's palsy. Being partially paralyzed on one half of my face means that I sometes can't control spit, food, drink, etc. it only takes a little and I am coughing and choking with tears pouring out. It sucks but I have learned to live with it. It doesn't happen as often as it used to.

Yeah. Not as often as I used to, and I'm not even sure it's spit all the time. All of a sudden I'll start choking, tears, insane coughing, gasping for air, feels like your throat is closing up, for no apparent reason. It could happen while having a cup of tea (before even swallowing it) or just watching tv. My dad had the same thing, and my youngest dd also has it. The only thing I can put it down to is heredity. We're all tall and dd and myself both take after my dads side of the family. But we have no idea what actually causes it.

OH. MY. GOODNESS! I almost posted this same thing yesterday, but thought NO, this is too embarrassing. It happened to me yesterday, after laughing. Literally thought I was going to die!!!
I've also choked on my hair! When outside with the wind blowing and you inhale. I predict I will die choking on a cheese stick though. Now that I list all of these, maybe I have an issue worthy of seeking medical attention.

Glad to hear we are not alone.

It's been a theory of mine for a number of years that it appears to affect tall people among other things. Just an observation really but interesting to know you have the same thing!

Yep, I do it more than I should admit to! I often tell people that after 50 years, I have yet to figure out how to breath and swallow at the same time.

Another pea here for whom it is clearly genetic.
My dad was terrible; happened frequently to him. My sister and myself and both my daughters have this issue.
I can't eat Starburst because they trigger this reaction almost immediately. Also can happen with gum, as someone else mentioned. And we choke with food and liquids too. I think our eppliglotises (eppigloti?) malfunction so that spit/food/drink goes down the wrong way, as they say. It was worse when I was younger, and I'd get in this vicious cycle where I'd swallow then cough over and over again. Horrid!
