my daughter is doing her masters in Copenhagen (and it appears, as it's wrapping up, may stay a while). I visited her two years ago in the fall for 12 days and we did a wee jaunt to Edinburgh - we could only do 3 days as she was tied to class schedule (loved it). last fall I visited for 13 days and we took the train to Berlin, this time she was doing an internship so again we could only do 3 days (liked Berlin, but it was the 50th anniversary of the Berlin marathon, which would never occur to research prior to booking a trip, but will in the future - roads closed off, transit stops closed, etc). this fall, I am planning to visit her in Copenhagen again - we are hoping to do another trip and I am considering Greece. she will be done school/internship and has more flexibility so we can go longer. I am starting to research but I know nothing so am looking for advice. I would be open to other suggestions as well, I have been to Paris, visited several cities in Spain when she did a semester abroad and I brought her brothers for 2 weeks in 2022, I have been to Amsterdam years ago and she went to Italy with her bro last summer. she has travelled a lot in Europe as a student but neither of us has been to Greece. I am a single mom of 2 in uni and 1 finishing high school. I can't afford to travel extravagantly so tend to stay in 3 star or airbnb so we can buy some groceries and do laundry. I save my credit card points so that helps with flights. that is just for context, no recommendations for the ritz or a week on a super-yacht please

I’m on a cruise ship in the Aegean right now and I loved Rhodes and also Bodrum, Turkey.

Oops, I’m not used to calling it Türkiye which is the correct way. We spent time in the port town of Bodrum and also in the countryside nearby.

We’ve been to Greece several times. I loved Santorini and Crete. Crete is a large island with several different areas. We stayed in the east of the island near Agios Nikolaos and did a day trip to Heraklion. If I were to return, I’d stay either in Heraklion or further west near Chania.

Corfu is lovely but I’m thinking of it as a vacation destination, not for travelling/sightseeing.

In 2022 we took my kids and dd's fiancee to Greece for 2 weeks. We flew into Athens and then flew on to Crete and stayed in Chania (which is beautiful). We were there for 5 nights and then spent one night in Heraklion to catch the ferry to Santorini. We stayed in Oia in an AirBnB that was right in the center of town so it was nice when the sun set because everyone would leave and we had the entire place to ourselves. It is amazing how cleared out Oia gets after the sun goes down. We had great views of the caldera. We were there for 3 nights. Then we took a ferry to Milos and spent a couple nights there. It was very pretty but definitely catered to the 20 something crowd. If you go there Sarakiniko beach is unreal! Then we actually took a flight from Milos back to Athens where we spent the rest of our trip. Athens was okay, very noisy and very urban. We used it as a jumping off point to visit more of the northern islands. We stayed in an AirBnB that overlooked the ruins. We saw smoke from a wildfire in the distance but it never got close to us. We went in June and it was 95 degrees and no rain the entire time we were there. Athens had great museums and shopping. DM me if you have any questions.
We stayed away from Mykonos because that is the most expensive island and the most touristy. Most people I spoke to said they didn't like Mykonos because it was so commercialized.

My trip to Greece was years ago but I'm going to suggest it anyway. The Ionian islands of Kefalonia with a day trip to Ithaca. Kefalonia is where Captain Correlli's mandolin was filmed. The Cave Lake of Melissani is wonderful. www.visitgreece.gr/islands/ionian-islands/kefalonia/

I was one of the crazy people running the 50th Berlin Marathon last fall 🤣 sorry about the roads! I loved Germany so much and would love to return. After the race, my friend and I took the train to Prague. We LOVED it, I would highly recommend. It’s a great city for a 2-4 day side trip. It was not an expensive city to visit, either.
Greece is on my short list. I don’t think you can go wrong there, either! Have a great time, whatever you decide. 😊 Note that the Athens Marathon is in early November and will cause similar issues… 😉

Appreciate all the suggestions! Definitely helpful to begin to do some research - I am nervous on the water and in the air so hoping to find maybe a couple of places close enough together that don't need to spend a ton of time either on a plane or on a boat (although choice would be boat over plane.... even if it took longer, which is why we picked Berlin last fall - could get there by train. side note: Germany!! What is *with* your train system?!?!). Note that the Athens Marathon is in early November and will cause similar issues… 😉 We are planning Sept and believe me, this is added to my checklist when looking at destinations from now and ever onwards. Thank you everyone!! obviously open if anyone else wants to chime in!

We're heading to the Greek Isles in mid September so it looks like a popular choice.
