My next door neighbor has lived on this block most of his life, and in his house for the past 45 years. He's jokingly referred to as the mayor of the block, and has an opinion on everyone and everything in the neighborhood. Generally not a bad guy, but very opinionated, and sure his opinion is the only right one.
Yesterday he calls to me over my privacy fence, and tells me he & his wife saw a huge rat in their yard last night.
It is of note that a few years ago he had his entire back yard cemented over. Not a blade of grass was allowed to survive back there. And he quite proudly "nukes" any weeds that might somehow pop up near the perimeter of his concrete yard.
So, he's telling me about this rat and casually throws in, "It must like all the greenery in your yard."
Yes sir. My hostas, my maintained and mowed grass, and the tiniest germinated seedlings brought a rat to your yard.
It could never have been the overflowing birdfeeder hanging in your yard, could it? The one the birds spill from? And the squirrels climb up and also spill from?
But since the seeds are labelled "birdfood" no opportunistic rat would ever eat those seeds, right?
And, my guy, we live in a large neighborhood, ripe with trashbags not in lidded cans, dumpsters outside local restaurants, people who for whatever reason throw crumbled bread on their sidewalk to feed birds, etc. Rats are just here.
Vent over.
Any neighbor vents you need to share?

Itβs the seed! Without a doubt. Had the exact same problem myself except I was being Snow White and scattering the seed on the ground to attract more sweet little birdies. Yeah. Well all I did attract were those in fur coats with 4 paws and a tail, sadly in a spell between cats.
Iβm sorry you are dealing with an opinionated numbskull.

I think we've all dealt with "Mayor of the Block" types. Ugh.
My small-ish vent is that we live in an HOA. I made sure to get a copy of my CC&Rs when we moved in and read them to know what to expect for the rules and regulations. My HOA Management company is not super strict, but I digress. You have not been "allowed" to park on our private streets for over a decade. The HOA paid for signs to be posted "no parking, towed at owner's expense". There is plenty of parking in your garage, driveway, or along the public street.
Without fail, people park in the private street. I drive a minivan and backing out of our steep driveway is already a slow process so I don't scrape the underside of my vehicle. Then the neighbor across the street has friends over and they park in the street. So, now it takes longer. Will the HOA fine them? No. They have now gotten a sticker sheet and put 7,000 sticker notices instead of the "immediate" tow.
Now, I'm not saying I want people to have to pay the high tow fees to get their vehicle back, but I am saying it would be nice if people would have some common courtesy. /vent off

I hope you pointed out that his seeds are their food source and not your hostas. I wouldn't have been able to keep silent.
My husband loves his bird feeders and I noticed a family of rats had moved in and were enjoying the bounty. I made him move the feeders down the hill so they'd get out of the yard. He tried to say they were mice π€£π€£ but eventually had to agree with me when the rat snakes started visiting.
They never tried to come in the house with all these cats, but I didn't like them in my actual yard. And your neighbor is going to have them come in if he's not careful!
(I will say they were the glossiest, healthiest, most beautiful rats you've ever seen, lol)

My neighbors have lights lining their driveway that look like an airstrip. They often do not turn off the lights that are on their house overnight, in violation of our town's 'dark skies' ordinance. When they built the house, they decided to position it in such a way that the front of their house faces the back of our house (in conflict with the original development plans which had it positioned to face the road). So all those lights shine into the back of my house all night long. Yes, I have blinds in my HUGE windows; but there is a small transom to allow airflow which has no blind and of course, light leaks in through it. I will survive; but it's irritating to say the least.

File that under, "None of your business." Rats like seeds and open trash cans.
Instead of a mayor, we had a dictator. She was president for 10 years. If anyone opposed her, she used the proxies of the seasonal residents to stack the board in her favor.
Our homeowners' dues include landscape maintenance. For 35 years, the same landscaper did everyone's yards and the common areas, and the older residents loved him because he did odd jobs for them. The dictator acted like it was her job to keep him in the neighborhood, even when he was a vindictive pr*ck to anyone who suggested putting the job out for competitive bids.
We finally got rid of both of them a couple of years ago after a giant battle. Then we saw what a bad job he did. Some records are missing, so money is probably missing, too, but we can't prove it. So yeah, we had rats, too.

Yes, we had a neighbor who kept multiple bird feeders and suddenly rats appeared where there had never been any as well. Of course if your yard with a variety of plants (as opposed to cementing it over as in the case of the OP's neighbor), you'll likely find that birds show up in your yard to enjoy the benefits of those plants instead.

I hope your neighbor does not decide to harm your hostas.
We live on the west edge of a cul de sac. On the East edge of the cul de sac is a man who does not work. He makes his living with picking items from the curbs and then having garage sales. He has been caught stealing so we don't associate with him or his family. The next two homes are empty and may be that way for a long time. On the west side of our house (our nearest neighbor) is a mentally ill man who won't speak to us (which is just fine). I wish we had a friendly pleasant neighbor the way we did when we moved here.

Dows he think most people pave their yards? What a weirdo.
My neighbor vent is that when a package of mine gets mis-delivered to the condos next door, they keep it. There are three units and no-one answers the bell to their gate, ever, so I canβt know who keeps the packages. Iβve left notes before, but no one ever responds. So far the vendors have been willing to refund or replace, but itβs really gross to do that to your neighbor!

My neighbor vent is that I live in a townhouse condo with HOA. We have a small patch in front of our houses that weβre allowed to plant in- or not. If we modify it in any way the landscapers wonβt touch it, other than mulch. A few years back, I put in a small lilac. I keep it trimmed down so it stays away from the house, and the trimming makes it super fat and fluffy and a ton of flowers!
Weβve had a super rainy spring and the lilacs are blooming weird around here. Mine finally popped yesterday (rainy) and I was looking forward to the scent and the couple of days of glorious lilac blooms in front of my house.
Someone came and cut the blooms of the front of my bush!!!!!!!
Iβm livid! In a week it wonβt matter and I hope that rude a** person enjoys their bouquet.

Well. I live in a city neighborhood, though it is pretty suburban looking. There is a population of unhoused folks living in the shadows here, so they are my neighbors.
Lots of stories related to that, though I think we try to be reasonably tolerant as a neighborhood. We do tend to draw the line at human excrement deposited in our yards/on our cars/sidewalks. No one is wild about dog crap either, but human excrement is kind of a no-go. Good way to spread plague and the like, if I recall my history correctly. It seems like most people without access to bathroom facilities prefer to use the woods--or at least bury it like when you're camping.
I also am pretty spicy about folks who steal property. There's a surprising amount of tolerance for that but I draw my own personal line there also. You steal my stuff and I catch you? You'd better run as fast as you can because I'm not going to let that go. Same with vandalism. Smash my car window, you little asshole? I find out it's you--I will wait for you in the tall grass. I don't know what I'm going to do when you pass by but I will devote a lot of time to thinking about it.
Other than that, my neighborhood is awesome, as are my neighbors. I couldn't always say that (I once had a literal order of protection against my next door neighbor in another neighborhood/state/lifetime and pressed charges against him for assaulting me--we ultimately moved because of it after a policeman told me the whole police force knew about the issue and they were all worried they would have to come arrest me or my husband one day for snapping and that everyone would know whose fault it was but we would still be in trouble), so I am grateful for what we have. There's an old curmudgeon guy who posts on our FB group and he is incredibly annoying but I honestly don't even know where he lives so he's clearly not intrusive of my personal space/property. We have a new baseball stadium in close proximity and they shoot off fireworks on weekend nights, so that is the current controversy. We are salty about fireworks.

Good Lord I also have a neighbor that has SO MANY battery or solar powered strings of lights in their yard. I live close enough to an airport I fear a plane mistaking it for the actual airport. Thatβs not even the worseβthe mother of the owner lives in a frigging motor home parked in the yard just off their driveway and between the house next door. And multiple yard art type crap in the yard with some wrapped in lights. Two drivable vehicles always parked in the street or in the culdesac with two driveable and one non drivable in the driveway and one old ElCamino on blocks in the street in front of their house. Three single men and the girlfriend of the owner and a very large dog live in the house. They have chickens and possibly ducks in the fenced side and back yard. The ownerβs school aged daughter and two cats also are there. The house next door to them is recently for sale. Good luck with that. They have lowered the value of every house on this street. This used to be the nicest street in the subdivision. I have my house in a trust for my son so no moving for me. Nothing can be done about any of this because we are in the county. Less is more and just because you can doesnβt mean you should evidently means nothing to them. Pray for me! LOL

We have new neighbors. A lovely couple with a small child. Only been here a month or so. The issue? We have trees, lots of trees in both of our yards. (Itβs why we chose this house ). Heβs marked 11 of his 40-50-60 ft trees to cut down. Iβm sad - but none of my business. Some of the trees are hickory nut trees and last fall season when the leaves and nuts dropped, they remained on the ground because the previous owners moved out last summer. So new neighbor raked up the yard and made an open burn pile and burned leaves and nuts. Two times now. The problem - itβs against a city ordinance and our HOA to openly burn yard waste. The bigger problem is- they are both a real estate agents. You would think they would know better. Plus, they are one of the very few minority families in our neighborhood. We donβt want them to feel attacked or unwanted. So we will say nothing and hope he doesnβt burn down our houses. (I swear if my puppies are harmed there will be hell to pay.)

We had neighbors who cut down all the pines on the hill out back behind their house. I was sad because the cardinals prefer pines to the other stuff like sweet gum, which we have a lot more of behind our house. The cardinal numbers dropped substantially at our feeders after that. Looks like the new neighbors are going to let nature reclaim that part of the hill though, I hope. I've been tossing pine cones over there on the sly. π€ I love the wooded hill behind us as it's home to so many animals. I can't wrap my head around wanting to cut down all the trees when it's not really a usable yard or space anyway due to the grade of the hill/ridge. Owls, hawks, possums, squirrels, chipmunks, raccoons, turtles, deer, coyotes, all have been seen and heard back there. Not everyone enjoys nature the way I do though.

my neighbours have 3 yappy dogs (our houses are semi-detached, as they refer to them, which also mean semi-attached). I can hear them bark their fool heads off periodically. but the in the summer, it sucks extra. they leave the back door open so the dogs can come in and out as they like. my parking is in the back and whether walking or driving, I leave out the back 95% of the time. pretty much every time I step foot out there from may to October, I am greeting by a symphony of barks. in fairness, if I am out there to work on my garden or have people over, they will bring them inside and close the door, so I really do appreciate that.
but, SPEAKING OF RATS, my gf was over and saw one run across my parking space from that neighbour and my other neighbour. I told her I saw a rat and said I wondered if it was because of all the vegetables she grows (tomatoes, beans, zucchini, etc), I only grow flowers in pots as my small "yard" is patio stones. she was a bit offended because the neighbour on the other side is the only one with a garage and it is HEAPED with all kinds of junk... she said it was from HIS yard, not hers. so grateful for my cat.... earns his keep for that deterrent factor alone!!!

Years ago, DH was talking to a neighbor about rats. Neighbor indignant that DH said he saw a rat go into the man's garage. (DH just wanted him to know the rats were in there.) Neighbor said "We don't have rats!" DH asked, "What is that?"--a rat was on the porch with them. Neighbor huffed away.

I was just looking down at the birds at the feeders and the snake slithered past! I don't see her (?) that often, but I'm pretty sure it's always the same one because she's very very long and obviously has been around a while. She's a beautiful black rat snake and is at least 6ft long, probably 7' but I've obviously never been able to measure her. I've caught her on video a few times, including today, which shows just how long and majestic she is! She makes her way around my rock wall from time to time, helping keep the chipmunk population under control. I haven't seen the rats in a few years, maybe she ate the whole family.

Weβre so lucky both here and at the cabin, all of our neighbors in both places are wonderful. Thereβs an oddball who lives next door to our renter though. Dude is just goofy. He likes to do stuff like mow his grass so short that it quickly turns yellow/brown at the slightest level of drought. DH has told him that if he adjusted his mower blade up to leave the grass a bit longer, it would tolerate the warmer, drier times better but he just wonβt do it. So his lawn always looks like dried up crap.
Also, every year he holds this big thing in his yard with a bunch of yard games, a dunk tank (!!) and other similar things. A couple years ago the lawn was too soggy in his yard that weekend because it actually rained, so he wanted to know if he could put the dunk tank on our property. Um, no thanks, we didnβt want to have anything come back on us liability wise if some drunken fool got hurt at his party.

I hope you pointed out that his seeds are their food source and not your hostas. I wouldn't have been able to keep silent. I didn't.
When he was younger, he was such a thorn in my family's side, and was pissy about everything. Now that he's older, he's calmed down so much, but I don't want to rile him up because I don't want to unleash the beast. Plus, he was laid off several months ago, and is just always looking for something to complain about, and he finds something new constantly.
By this morning, he was complaining about how the churchgoers at the church across the street park in front of his house. Hostas forgotten just like that.
I hope your neighbor does not decide to harm your hostas. He'd have to climb a pretty tall fence. I don't think he'll commit hostacide. He actually has two in the planter box in the front of his house. Maybe he secretly likes them?
Dows he think most people pave their yards? What a weirdo. Funny that you say this, but an absurdly large number of people who have moved into the neighborhood within the last five to ten years have cemented over any semblance of nature on their property.
Two blocks away, a family cemented right up against their old tree's roots. It died, and is falling apart piece by piece.
Four blocks in the other direction, a family moved in to the corner house, and completely cemented over and made a raised patio on top of what had been a really lush, beautiful garden. They flattened everything except three shrubs in the front, which they made cement planter boxes around, leaving only a couple inches around the trunk of each shrub open for the dirt to absorb rain. Those shrubs turned brown in one season. They pulled them out the following spring, planted smaller flower plants in the tiny holes, which also died. Now there are plastic flowers shoved in the holes.
And across the street from me, a flipper bought a house, and immediately ripped out the mature azaleas. Then his crew cemented the entire front and side sloped lawn. And then painted it green. Painted.It.Green! They didn't find a buyer, but have rented it out to several different people over the last few years.
Someone came and cut the blooms of the front of my bush!!!!!!! I hate that kind of theft. People who have never put in the time, money, and work caring for something growing, needing to be patient to see the results. Just taking. I'm sorry that happened.
I can hear them bark their fool heads off periodically. but the in the summer, it sucks extra. My out back neighbors from hell have a dog that barks at me whenever I garden.
I don't even mind the dog barking. It's what they do. But the wife is such a piece of trash. She screams at this dog, "You C*ck s*cker mother effer, get your b*tch *ss into the house before I beat the sh*t out of you."
Literally, human garbage. I'm still really hoping they move away sooner rather than later (they rent).

I have two sets of crappy neighbors. The family to the left side of my home has 5 kids 2 daughters in their middle 20's who live there with their boyfriends, and 3 sons still in school who are just plain awful. The HOA does nothing in our subdivision. They shoot guns all the time, have yappy dogs, ride mopeds and motorized scooters, drones over the houses and cars and they are supposed to be banned. They ride their stuff up our driveway all the time it does no good to say anything they just do whatever they want. The sheriff has been to my home many times asking if I by chance have any videos of them coming and going because their sons have been caught going around the neighborhood destroying the park(ripped up benches and threw in lake, broke into new homes being built etc.) But they never do anything to them. The boys are kicked out of school all the time, kicked off the bus by second week of school. Our new neighbor is a single mom who has a boyfriend that keeps coming everyday and parks blocking our mailbox. We don't get our mail on those days. When she first moved in we came home one night and she has parked her large SUV blocking our driveway. She refuses to use her driveway. My husband didn't want to upset her because she is a single mom. But the boyfriend came out one night to get in his truck and my husband finally told them nicely it's against the law to block our mailbox and driveway. The guy just nodded. A couple of days later there he was blocking our mailbox again, my husband pulled in from work and the mailman happened to be running late that day so my husband marched across the street beat on the door and the boyfriend came to the door and with her standing behind him and he told them both you block my mailbox or driveway again I will have you towed and my husband asked what was wrong with parking in their own driveway and they answered it's a tight fit with two large vehicles and they like the driveway free so the kids have a place to play. He just shook his head and said I will have them towed start using your driveway.
I get so upset with the HOA because they do nothing but sure do take huge fees from all of us. Except the family with 5 kids and boyfriends living there we found out they don't pay the fees they are 6 years behind.

I live in an apartment. It's not your typical apartment, more part of a complex, ranging from independent living to complex/long term care for seniors.
Anyway. When they built our building, which is the independent one, they included a common room. Many of these types of complexes have them. I know of at least 3 in the region. None of them have the problems we do with sharing the common room or understand its purpose. While it's certainly ok to use it for people in the building to hang out together, it was primarily created so that people could have private functions that require more space than our apartments. There aren't even that many of us who want/need to use it that way, and yet for quite a while, any time I booked it, I'd get a nasty note complaining about it. They never went to management...management had no idea about it. I ended up going to management & they put a stop to it. It was/is just this one small group of about 4 women who get offended when they come down to do a puzzle & see that it's booked for the afternoon or evening.

I'm so very grateful for my current neighbours - the across the road neighbour is very nice and friendly. The neighbour over the side fence is also - we had a tornado take out that fence last fall and he and his grandson have been re-building it (we pitched in money towards supplies). The neighbour over the back fence was nice too -I don't care for his politics (he's employed by our congresswoman who is dreadful) but he was a fine neighbour. The house has recently been sold and I'm hoping the new neighbours are also nice - they've been renovating so haven't moved in yet.

The residents of my apartment building are required to compost now but all of a sudden my neighbors forgot what to do with regular garbage & recycling as if these rules haven't been in place for decades. The trash room on my floor is often overflowing with larger items that should be brought to a designated area in the basement, the bin for plastics and metal has paper/boxes/Styrofoam in it, paper recycling is stuffed into plastic grocery store bags in the bin for papers & small flat boxes. Regular garbage bags are left on the floor or not pushed down the chute. I feel bad for the guys who work in the building (they shouldn't have to sort peoples' garbage) plus this situation can draw bugs.

But I do occasionally think of Sweet Tiny Jamie when I hear someone use the expression βSweet Baby Jesus!β
