I'm watching this show and I'm convinced these people have a sickness. Yes, they are saving money but it's taken over their lives, their homes, their time etc.
One woman spends 70 hours a week cutting coupons, sitting on the internet to find coupons and planning her shopping. She's completely filled her garage, a room in their house and is now taking over her husband's "mancave".
I now some people will donate some of it, but these people have between $20K and $40K worth of stuff in their homes. Why would anyone need 300 toothbrushes sitting in their garage? Or 1000 bars of deodorant? What really gets me are things like 300 boxes of cereal. That stuff has an expiration date.
I can see stocking up on a good deal but the level they take it to is absurd.

I completely agree with everything you said! Every time I watch that show, I wonder what the he!! they do with all that stuff. I once saw someone buy something like 300 boxes of tic tacs. Why? At least those probably keep forever, but the things that expire, I can't imagine how they can ever use it all up before the expiration date. To me, it seems very selfish to stock up and hoard hundreds of the same item, essentially clearing the shelves of some things, leaving none for anyone else.
I am also always amazed how they know before they even go the store what they will spend, right down to the penny, and God forbid they end up owing a few dollars more than they were expecting! They have already gotten several hundred dollars worth of items for almost free, yet they will take even more time to quibble over a difference of $5.
I would like to coupon to save some money, but to that degree...it makes my head spin just thinking about it.

So your subject is "Does anyone here do extreme couponing"? Your first sentence is these people have a sickness. I'm sure the peas that do are not wanting to answer your question since you've made up your mind.

I work with a woman who does this. It is the only thing she can have a conversation about. She donates some of her stuff to charity and the rest she sells for a profit at garage sales a few times a year.
I think it is admirable to be thrifty. I wish I had the self discipline and organization skills to be able to utilize coupons and sales as well as she does. But, in all honesty, my time is worth too much to me.

To answer your question, I think there's a couple that does this on a facebook group I belong to and they do it for profit. I think with any reality show, it's better for ratings to show the extremes. It's harder to get awesome deals because of shows like the one TLC produces. I try to stock up on finish tabs and snack type foods that will work for kids lunches. I'm a slacker. I look for deals when we are getting low on certain items.

I did the extreme couponing for about a year. I got a nice stockpile of Health and Beauty Aids and gave TONS of it away. I haven't couponed in years now. I plan on starting again when the weather gets nice but at nowhere the extreme I was doing it before.

I've never understood the lure of couponing. I've clipped coupons a few times but not for many years. I buy the same brands of detergents etc., and am not interested in changing. Same with food. I see coupons for cheap hamburger, frozen waffles and types of food we don't eat.

I will use a coupon if it's for something that I already will buy. I am not opposed to switching brands though, if I can another brand for half off. But that's just being thrifty. When there is a sale on for things like toiletpaper or papertowels, shampoo and othe bathroom necessities I will stock up real good, but I don't have a stockpile of things just because they were cheap. To me, part of being thrifty is also buying only what you need or have a use for. I don't have pets, but if I see a wicked good deal on dog treats, I will get some for my sister's dog. I think it's admirable that some of the people on this show donates so much food to people who need it. Or do a big shop for friends struggeling with finances and can get them lots of stuff for $6. But having a stockpile of things with an experation date is just wasteful. You only have one husband and two children, your family cannot possibly consume 300 boxes of cereal within the next five months. But hey... I hoard scrapbooking supplies and is almost afraid to touch it, because it is just so pretty sitting on display So who am I to judge ?

I'm horrible at remembering to use coupons but I can see the appeal, its kind of like a game to them, to see how well they can do and see it get the total to a penny. Plus you enjoy getting a good deal right? I'm sure the rush of getting a good deal is severely magnified if you get $300 worth of groceries for $6. It is not a waste of their time if they enjoy it, I mean really I could say scrapbooking or posting on the internet is a waste of time but if you enjoy it, its not time wasted. Now if you want to talk extreme cheapskates I'll bite, I can't imagine wanting to live like some of those people, but it was an enjoyable show to cringe through :-) and I'm pretty frugal but I do not decant boxed wine into a bottle to go with my sheep's head dinner!

I usually only use coupons if it is something I already buy. The only exception for that is diapers. I will get "extreme" over diapers because I have so many friends with babies and toddlers. I was able to make a stockpile of all different sizes for my niece before she was born, she will be one year old next month and the stockpile is just about empty now.
I also coupon for dog and cat treats to donate to our local humane society.

My daughter has been watching it the past few hours. The guy bought stuff that he divided into 3 groups, then went crazy when his total on the 2nd group was $1.67 over his planned amount. He tracked down the 21st can of soup and got a refund. In the 3rd batch, they ended up owing him $5.
I would be so angry at someone doing that in line in front of me. What it says is that YOUR time is worth so much more than every other person in the store's time, and you are entitled to tying up the checkout, emptying the shelves, etc. for your hobby. I don't think anyone ever "buys" 500 bottles of free shampoo to truly be thrifty - they may well give it away to charity, but how much do you really need?
The stores around me don't double coupons any more. And they will NEVER pay you if your coupons push you under $.00 - so this show is just one more scripted 'reality' show that doesn't actually show things that happen IRL.

I think all people need some sort of challenge or goals in their lives. For these extreme couponers it's the challenge of how much product they can get for as little money as possible.
But it is it any worse than the 2 guys who spent a couple of weeks hanging on the side of a sheer mountain in Yosemite?
i don't do any couponing and I'm certainly not going to hang from the side of a mountain for a couple of but neither am I going say these folks have a sickness.
As as far as a form of hoarding. I would say yes if they didn't use the products. But they use the products in their own homes as well give the stuff away and I guess sell some of it. So I'm not sure how that can be considered hoarding. Hoarding is when stuff comes in and never goes out until you die.

I used to.. NOT like that though.... I might have had an abundance of certain items.. I remember one year when those new dishwasher pods came out and there were some awesome coupons for those. I think I might have had about 20 boxes of those. Now something like that I used it all up over a year. Toilet paper was another thing. I could get a four pack for .25 cents with my coupon. I might have had 20 or more packs, but again we used that up. Things I did buy BUT regret were probably the cleaning products and Air fresher crap. It was cheap enough but was overbought on that. I still have some stuff floating around. I guess I can say I used those products but I wouldn't go down that road again. I did make some gift bags for friends with stuff I had a lot of.. toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoos, etc. but still I never had more than 20 of some product. Just enough to fill one pantry in my hallway. It burned me out. I tried to start again, but I just can't do it. Sounds weird doesn't it??

I was watching this morning and one of the ladies was showing off her stock pile and pointed out tons of boxes of Hamburger Helper. She made the comment that her family hates the stuff, but it looks good in her stockpile! That's insanity!

I literally had my hand smacked by some man at the store one day because he had coupons for the Pillsbury biscuits and I tried to buy a can. He told me I can't have one, he's buying them ALL because he had "coupons" for them. There were like 10 cans in the refrigerator. He was a crazy person. I still took a can anyway...as a matter of fact, I took 2 because he ticked me off...LOL

I agree or the one where the girl bought a bunch of BBQ sauce at 50 cents a bottle and then goes on to say and I don't even like BBQ Sauce. It's not savings if you are still paying money for something that you aren't ever going to use.

I never ever pay anything like full price for toiletries/cereal/paper products.

I know of one lady that does extreme couponing. I have no idea how much time she spends or if she's a shelf clearer (or has a "sickness"). She is the mom of one of my daughter's friends. Once every two months, she has a sale in her garage. She has everything priced and neatly organized on shelves - just like a store. Most of her items are health and beauty - tp, tampons, make-up, nail polish, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo and conditioner, cleaning supplies, diapers, antacids, vitamins, detergents, etc. The only food items I remember seeing were some energy bars and liters/12 packs of soda.
She told me that she enjoys it (it's like a game to her), she makes a nice profit and it's her fun money to go on trips and spoil her grandchildren.
I like that she sells at such a low price, and also donates a lot of the items to a local food pantry and women's shelter.

We don't have couponing in Australia like you guys do. Some businesses put discounts on the back of supermarket cash register dockets, but that's about it. I wish we did have it here - from what I've seen watching that show on cable, people can do their weekly shopping free or almost free. That would be fabulous and I would sit for an hour a week clipping coupons to shop for nothing. But no way would I give up my whole life for it like some of these people do. I agree with you Lauren, why do they need 100 boxes of cereal for goodness sake! To spend 70 hours a week clipping coupons - it's either become an obsession with them, or it's just plain greed. But I do like that some of them do give to charity as well. I can imagine them at 80 years old - "What did you do when you were young grandma?" "Well Johnny, I spent 10 hours a day cutting up newspapers. I didn't have time to go out and live life or have fun." Quite sad, but hey - if that's their way of enjoying themselves, go for it. Maybe shops or coupon promoters should put limits on the 'purchases', like 3 per customer per day. Them at least others might have a fighting chance before the extremers empty the shelves.

Selling things at a garage sell makes a bit of sense, but you are still putting in a lot of time and effort for your profit IMHO.

We don't have couponing like that in New Zealand, but I am thrifty. Like say the juice we get might normally be $5.99 and goes on special for $3.49 I'm going to stock up. I live in a small town and all the supermarkets are close together, so I get certain items from each one, depending on whats on special that week. We get junk mail for all three of them on a Sunday night. Can save a considerable amount doing it that way, rather than being loyal to one store.

They buy HUGE amounts of stuff...then when I want just two Purex detergents...they are gone!! I know a couple do donate but the others--scary

Does it count that I am extremely lazy about coupling? Most of the food products I buy rarely have coupons, cleaning supplies I buy on sale and health and beauty I leave to the kids to exploit. The only items that I hoard are toilet paper and dental floss.
Insofar as the people on TV, I really think it is staged. What CVS has that many deodorants on hand when there is a sale?

Many states have started cracking down on coupon use. I'm guessing this is largely due to the show. I wouldn't have the energy or time to extreme coupon, but I do like to use coupons for items that I do buy and buy maybe 2-4 if I have a coupon. I really appreciate people who leave a coupon near a product that I use. I've been known to hand people a coupon at a store when I'm not going to use it. However, extreme couponing is a mystery. Read your toothpaste tubes people. Toothpaste expires. I brush 3 times per day and often times so does my husband and we still couldn't go through that much toothpaste before it expires. Also, I would love to see coupons for healthier foods like fresh produce, organic foods, etc.

They were going to use them as stocking stuffers, I think. For what, the next 267 years? Yeah, I'd have to say it at least borders on a sickness when your stash takes over your whole house and there is no chance you're ever going to use the stuff. Ya wanna see real whack-os?
