I've googled but the peas know best. My all-grown up Compassion child in Uganda has married and had a baby - I want to send her a gift, but not through Compassion. Any ideas would help!

This is probably the first time I've ever seen anyone online want to send money to Africa for a real, legitimate reason.

I'd go with Western Union if you can. It'll probably be cheaper, easier, safer and faster. Part of my job used to be tracking down lost wires. Depending on which bank you use here and which one she uses in Uganda, it might have to go through several corespondent banks before it would reach her. Each intermediary bank has a right to charge a fee (usually $10-$30 per bank)- plus a fee for sending (I think ours was $50 to send an international wire of any amount), a fee for receiving (was about $30), and any currency conversion charges.
Adding additional banks makes it much easier for things to be delayed or lost as well. If Western Union doesn't get it there, its on them to find it and fix it, as it never leaves their system. If a US bank sends an international wire and it gets lost along the way, it can be almost impossible to recover because each bank can just blame it on the next bank in the chain. Some new regulations kicked in a few years ago that made sending wires internationally even more complicated. Wires are great for very specific circumstances like mortgage closings, otherwise, they are a pain in the butt.
I think its so cool that you have kept in touch, and wish her the best with her new baby!

Hahahahaha!! I hadn`t thought about the irony of sending money willingly to Africa. Thanks - I was wondering about WU. My Compassion daughter, Dinah, is such a success story! She was orphaned at 6 and went to live with relatives. Somehow she got into the Compassion program, and over the years, with a little help, she completed HS and then went on to train as a hairdresser. She can actually help other family members now. Thanks so much for your interest. PS Her baby is just. adorable.

We have wired money to Africa several times for trips -- to the best of my recollection always straight from our bank to a bank there. Never to Uganda though. But I don't see why Western Union wouldn't be sufficient for your purposes.
