It's back.
It's my most easily identifiable failure from homeschooling my child through the second half of her education and high school. Test anxiety.
Here's the backstory.
I did not identify test anxiety in dd until she started doing school online in middle school. I was surprised because it seemed to come out of the blue. I couldn't understand it because doing school online meant that the tests were not much different than the homework! You could still take them in your PJs, on the couch, where ever. You just couldn't ask for help. It's not like she didn't know the material either. Anyway, she got over that very quickly.
At 15, she was told by a dean at a prestigious university that she did not need to take SATs, APs, or other standardized tests. Huge relief for her. I thought she should still try a general SAT or ACT, but she declined. I didn't think much of it.
She's been going to college on a very part time basis, taking one class each semester while dancing full time. Until now.. she took a 3 week 4 credit course on campus. Today was the final exam. All morning long she's messaged or called with her anxiety. Told me that she thinks she ate something wrong or bad because her stomach hurts. She was driving me nuts! LOL. I think she was prepared. The exam was really to write a paper in class. She had the topic and all that she needed to discuss in advance. She even made an outline of what she was going to write and was allowed to bring it with her, along with supporting materials. There was nothing to worry about, but oh the anxiety was palpable even over texts!
This is a young woman who has danced on stage at the Met at NYC. She's spoken in front of thousands of students at a time. She's done 100s of auditions. I know I am her mom, but I just want to say WTH??? Oh, she's even taken a few online college exams and had a few that were proctored in person without this sort of anxiety!
I told her to use an exercise we did when she was very small and was anxious about something... I can't even remember what it was that made her anxious enough back then that I used this basic imagery exercise with her. She rolled her eyes at my suggestion (via text so it was an emoji.
)
Anyway, that's the long story. What has worked for you and yours?
