Earlier this week I finally got a diagnosis and started treatment for Lyme disease.
Long story short it took a few weeks, several antibiotics, a course of steroids and a couple tests before discovering that it was Lyme disease.
I felt bad before; joint and muscle pain, headache, fatigue and nausea but since I started the antibiotic I have felt worse!
Has anyone else experienced a worsening of symptoms during treatment for Lyme disease? I know I had it for about 3-4 weeks before I was diagnosed and started treatment but I don't think it was anywhere near long enough to be considered chronic.

My SIL is dealing with this. She has had Lyme Disease for probably about 15 years before she got a dx. She has been in treatment fulltime for more than a year now. The amount of antibiotics she has taken is astounding. She still feels really bad all the time. Hopefully, in your case is was caught soon enough that your treatment/recovery will not be as difficult as hers has been. She has mentioned that it is expected that she will feel worse before she feels better because as the Lyme spirochetes die and are expelled, it's very painful.

Didn't a pea have this and it was "hidden" or something?
I hope you feel better really fast. That sounds awful.

didn't MaryMary have this, plus several of her children??? I'm sorry you are dealing with this. My co-worker had it, it is very hard to detect. He told me he'll never be rid of it, but it goes into "remission" - and he also tries to control it with his diet, because he feels better (ie, no gluten, etc)

I was diagnosed with lyme disease when I was a teenager. The antibiotics did not make me feel worse, what antibiotics are you on? I would contact your doctor and let them know, you might be having a reaction to the antibiotic on top of the lyme symptoms.

My mom has had Lyme disease for 16 years now. She had it for 12 years before finally being diagnosed and 4 years later is finally doing better. She still has some symptoms, but most of them have gone. Since you haven't had it long, antibiotics usually are helpful within the first month or so (if you know for sure that is how long you have had it.) otherwise after that they don't really do much, just kind of mask the symptoms. My mom had to start taking herbal supplements and that helped her tremendously. Diet is also a big thing with Lyme; gluten specifically is really inflammatory and causes a lot of joint pain.

DH has this also, but negative tests. He got tick bites this June. So it might be Lyme with a false negative, or it might be one of the oodles of accompanying nasties that get carried with Lyme.
One thing he found is that he got a Jarisch Herxheimer reaction (feeling 10 times worse) when he took the antibiotics, which is the bacteria releasing toxins into the body as it dies. It feels awful, but is actually a good sign.

As Redsquirrel said, you can expect a herxheimer reaction as the bugs die. Look up "Lyme herx" if you're feeling game.
I was diagnosed nearly 5 years ago but had been sick for 14 years before that. Hopefully "early" detection and treatment sees you in a much better place. Along with my antibiotics (and lots of probiotics at a different time of day) I take many supplements to help my immune system fight this off, some herbal stuff that works with the antibiotics to kill the bugs and I avoid gluten, dairy, sugar and alcohol because they're harder for the body to process and contribute to the high levels of inflammation I'm already dealing with.
To help with the herx, I take Epsom salts baths, drink alka seltzer gold and lots of water throughout the day. I do better the day after I've had some gentle exercise and hence try and get a (often slow) walk in if I can. Your doctor may have other suggestions for you. Obviously I'm just a random stranger on the internet, not part of your medical team so these are just the things that work for me.
Wishing you a swift recovery.

That's right, it was Mary Mary. But was it her who had negative tests?

Thank you to everyone who replied to this post! It has given me a little better insight to this disease.
Everything I had previously found about Lyme disease simply stated that early treatment usually results in a complete recovery. What it failed to mention is that you might feel worse before you feel better due to the Herxheimer reaction. This bit of information has gone a long way in helping me understand and deal with this disease.
