I have been trying to achieve the loose wave look that is popular now. I have 1" and 1/2" curling irons as well as a flat iron. I've tried curling it with my flat iron (after watching videos) but the plates seem to be too loose and the hair just falls out of the iron as I try to twist. When using the curling irons the curls just look more "done" than I want. My sister told me she uses a curling wand. So, I just tried to use my curling iron but wrap the hair around without using the clip. That worked a little but I think I need a longer wand.
I'm wondering if I should get a curling wand? Or a different flat iron? Are there any wands that you recommend? Or flat irons that can be used for different purposes? Mine is a Solia. Any other tips?
Also, I'm curious if the hair dryers that say they dry more quickly actually work? I got mine about 5 years ago and I remember thinking it worked much faster than my previous dryer. But now I'm wondering the new ones are even better than what I have? A lot of times I don't style my hair in the morning because it takes too long for my hair to be dry enough to style.

I could never get the flat irons to work for me either. I like the Kiss Insta Wave tool.

I use that small flat iron and just do one twist, pulling straight down from there. The whole strand waves.

I got this dryer on Prime day for a little cheaper, and I think it dries my hair faster. It is a 1875 watt versus the 12-something that I used to have, so that certainly makes a difference. I like it and would buy it again. I didn't want to spend too much money, but knew I had to pay a little more than what I could get at the local Target. WazorIt did come shipped in the actual packaging though. Like if I went to Target, bought the dryer, slapped an address label on the box and dropped it in the mail. The box was a little smashed, but everything inside was ok.

I use a 1 inch curling wand. Start about an inch from the shaft and don't wrap the bottom two inches of hair. Alternate which direction you wrap the hair, helps give it a more random beach wave appearance.

When my hair is misbehaving, I use a wave iron (Bed Head Wave Artist for Beachy Curls). I have a natural wave that often gets pulled out by the weight of my hair. I believe I used it on the day of the photo in my avatar - if that's the type of loose wave you are looking for. The key is separating it into fairly small sections. I did read a tip once that you can twist a section of hair before you put it in the wave iron for a less uniform wave, but I wasn't successful making anything but a tangled mess when I tried that. The Wave Artist has a fairly large surface, so I think you would need at least length close to the top of your shoulder to make a good wave with it.
I can't help you on the hair dryer. My hair is so damn thick that it takes forever to dry no matter what hairdryer I use.

The loose waves really need the 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 inch barrels. I need a new one, I hate mine!!

I use a 1 inch curling wand. Start about an inch from the shaft and don't wrap the bottom two inches of hair. Alternate which direction you wrap the hair, helps give it a more random beach wave appearance. Many people don't know this. It stops the ringlets/corkscrew curls. Beach waves aren't consistent top to bottom curls for each piece. Some pieces you could start at the top, some start a bit further down and same with the bottom.
