I will preface this by saying I already have a Dr. appointment on Jan 30th for this, mostly just to get people around me to chill.
Last Wednesday I tripped on the buckled sidewalk and fell on my knee. Within 30 minutes I had it up and iced it and pretty much stayed that way for a minimum of 24 hours after that. It swelled up for a few days and ached, but as long as I take my 800 mg ibuprofen I'm good to go. Obviously I'm all black and blue. I can walk without pain, my knee does not feel like its weak, and can fully extend and bend my leg without issue. It hasn't interfered with my sleep. The only odd thing, is that when I run my finger about two inches above my knee, I feel a stinging below. Its painful then, but not take your breath away pain. And it is still slightly puffy. In my experience, I'd say this from deep bruising or possibly a irritated tendon. However, my DH, my mom, and friends at work think I need to see a doctor. I've banged my knees up many times in my life and this really doesn't feel different.
Anyway, I'm conflicted. I think I'm fine and I feel fine, but everyone around me seems to think I've done something awful. Thoughts from the peas?

i think it's good that you are seeing a doctor. even though you just think it's bruising, it doesn't hurt to make sure there isn't something else going on underneath. keep your appointment and feel better soon!

I'm shocked that a Dr office can't get you in for an injury much sooner than a month after.

Sounds like you may have either 1. Have a fracture on your patella or 2. Injured your ligaments. Or both.
Happened to my daughter. She could walk but you touched 2 specific areas and watch out, very very very painful.
She was in a half leg knee mobilizer for 6 weeks and then had 12 sessions of PT. She may eventually need surgery. So we have to keep an eye on it.
I would go to extended care if you have it aka urgent care so it can be xrayed. Then they can get you in sooner with ortho.
Knee injuries can be quite serious. I had torn my acl and fractured my cap too. Still have issues and am to have surgery.

I think they have 3 days? a week? to book semi-urgent visits. I'd have it looked at, with an x ray, just to rule out a cracked or chipped bone. It sounds like you fell pretty hard.

having recently seen my doctor and had my knee checked out after a fall - she said that falling directly on a bent knee is probably the worst thing you can do for your knee (even a healthy knee - unlike mine). I would have it checked out for a meniscus tear, patella fracture etc...it'll possibly need an MRI

My Jan 30th appointment is actually with my ortho doc who has been working with me for my arm. Like I just got the final ok right before Christmas. I was able to get in with my PCP tomorrow and she can at least xray it. Pending tomorrow's results, we can determine my path forward. *sigh* I feel like I'm falling apart lately. I've always been clumsy, but geez.... DH has threatened to follow me around with foam padding

I thought I was ok too when I fell but DH insisted I go to urgent care. Guess he was right, I had a hairline fracture. You really should get it checked.

Witt DD’s latest knee injury (she has had knee issues forever, and fell playing hockey) we found her physiotherapist did the best assessment, he emailed our family dr with his opinion and we went from there, unfortunately still not better (another fall,) so pushing for an MRI.... Your ortho dr, I would assume will be your best bet... wish we had that option..... good luck for a speedy recovery

I had knee surgery in June following a meniscus tear in March - torn during a half marathon. I would definitely go and get it x-rayed etc right away. You don't want to mess with knees!

Also to add to everything above me....
Even if it feels fine but, maybe isn't fine...you don't want it to heal wrong.

Does your Ortho have a NP or PA that you can get in earlier to see? I would do that? honestly if it was a Patella fx I think you would be having way more pain. It sounds more like a deep hematoma, which would be normal from the fall, and take some time to go away. But I would call and talk to the ortho NP or PA, I would not bother with a GP, Urgent care, or anyone else.

Can u bear full weight on it? If you had a dislocated or fractured patella, you would be feeling it.

If you can walk without pain and fully flex and extend your knee, I doubt you've done any real damage. By all means make an appt but I personally would not be worried. I'm sure it's painful when you press on it because it's bruised and still tender.

I fell cleaning my rock garden in Nov, catching the edge of my knee cap on the rock. 5 weeks later I could no longer stand the pain, plus my knee was giving out going up steps. Dr could move my knee in all directions, with no pain. Pain occurs with weight bearing, esp on steps. After x-rays, it is a dislocated knee cap. And since I had been walking around for 5 weeks, I damaged it probably even more.
Now a proud owner of a knee brace! Which is helping a lot. Rest, elevation, start PT soon.
Get it checked out asap!
