We moved from overseas into our rental home last August. It’s a perfect 4 bed home with a large fenced in yard for our two dogs and cat, and backs on to beautiful woodlands where my DS can cycle to school.
We signed a 1 year contract through the company DH works for but made it clear that we were staying for 2+ years.
DH’s company is global and relocates many employees all over the world. They have various relocation companies working on this. Over the past few months DH has been emailing them about renewing our lease and has been irritated and confused over their lack of clear communication.
Today, while we’re out of the country on vacation we discovered that the owners are moving back from the US in August and will be moving back into the house. So we have one month to find a new place. We already have vacation booked for August so that will be a problem too. I’m just so annoyed. The relocation company and/or letting agent must have known the owner’s intention not to renew the lease way before now. We live in a community populated with many expats so most of the best houses will already be leased out at this time of year so we’ll be left with the houses no one wants. Plus we have three pets which narrows down the choices even more.
I’m current sitting poolside at a beautiful resort in Turkey and I feel like I just need to go home and start packing up my stuff:(

Oh how frustrating! I get where you are coming from; DD just went through something similar. Hope you find a good fit. Try to enjoy your vacation, although I know that will be tough.

That is so rubbish of the relocation agents, it's hard to believe the owners got up yesterday morning and decided to return home in a month.
Can your husband escalate the issue in his company, within HR or the relocation dept? I can't imagine the company want your DH distracted by a housing issue.

Vent away. That's really frustrating.

I'm so sorry, that is lousy news to get...particularly while you're trying to enjoy your vacation.

I know you are frustrated beyond belief and my heart goes out to you. Unfortunately it is the owner prerogative to move back into a home they own. However, I would push for an additional two months time to find other accommodations and move whether it is with the owners or the leasing company. You may be better off trying the owner directly if you can get their name and number.

We had the exact same thing happen to us last year, except that the homeowners were selling, not moving back. It really, really sucks. Especially if you move frequently--it's just one more disruption of your life.
We are a military family and were responsible for the move, because it wasn't away from DH's duty station. We moved a lot of it ourselves and enlisted the help of a lot of teens (kids' friends.) We hired a moving company to move the big furniture and only ended up spending about $800 on the professional company, and probably another thousand paying the teens. It was expensive, but not as much as I had feared. I got used boxes for free off of Facebook Marketplace. It all worked out, but man, was I pissed!

As frustrating as it is for you, I bet the homeowners and relocation company are just as frustrated.
We had friends a few years ago that were in a similar position. They were homeowners in Canada and working in the US. When his tech industry employer lost funding, his job was gone with no notice. They were in limbo for a short while as he tried to get another job, but in the end had no choice but to head home.
I hope your relocation agent has already lined up the available rentals for you to look at when you get home from Turkey!

Thanks for all the encouraging words:) We absolutely don’t blame the owners. Whatever their situation, they have the right not to renew the contract. However DH was contacted by the rental company over six weeks ago asking if we wanted to renew the contract, he confirmed we did, then we didn’t hear anything despite multiple emails to various relocation agents.
He’s been on the phone most of the afternoon and listened to lots of apologies. Fortunately there may be a silver lining in this situation as another house in our street became available 2 days and it was our second choice when we were looking over a year ago. It’s slightly smaller than the one we’re in now but at least it’s in the same location:) We’re going to see it when we get home and hopefully we’ll be able to move in at the end of July.

I hope the new listing turns out to be a GO for you!! If it's on the same street, that will make it an easier move too--plus you already know the neighborhood. Good luck!!

Ugh, I’m so sorry. That’s a nightmare scenario I always fear as a renter myself. I hope the new place is good for you!
