I'm going there for work next week. I will be there Monday-Thursday, working during the day at Mercy Hospital, but I will have evenings after 5 free M-W. We are staying at what looks to be a lovely hotel--Hotel Julien. It's going to be so cold next week, so we may just want to stay in, but if we do decide to venture out, where should we go? We love to try local restaurants when we travel, so where should we eat? We will have a car, so we aren't limited as to where we can go.
Thanks! I'm sort of dreading this trip, so knowing we have some fun things or delicious food to look forward to will help.

I don't really know much about Dubuque, I live about 3 hrs south of there. But, there is a LSS in Marion/Cedar Rapids area.

My dh and I did a little getaway there last spring, and I really enjoyed it, which I admittedly was not expecting (he planned the whole thing and I honestly had no idea what we'd be doing there until we got there). We did a combo Dubuque/Galena visit. I had been to Galena before and really love it there, but I had been rolling my eyes about Dubuque. If you have time (which it doesn't sound like) you could go into Galena and do shopping/lunch.
As for Dubuque: we visited the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium downtown, and walked the river walk. They have a couple of casinos there, too, if that's your thing. Dh likes them. We toured the Blaum Bros brewery-- closer to Galena, which was really fun-- there are great cocktails and free samples!
We found some nice restaurants there. We liked 7 Hills Brewing (I had the ham & beer cheese sandwich and it was so good). One night we went to the Copper Kettle, across from the old (and very decrepit and ominous-looking) brewery. It's an interesting restaurant. I just had a burger there, but we tried our first Scotch egg as an appetizer. We had breakfast a couple of days at Charlotte's Coffee House. After touring the museum, we stopped for a flight of beer and some pinball at Backpocket Brewing.
Dubuque is pretty small, so depending where you're staying, there may be a restaurant within walking distance. That was true for 7 Hills Brewing.
Let me know if you have time to venture to Galena and I can make a few more suggestions. There's a lot to do there.
Don't dread this trip-- you'll like it!! I feel rather sentimental about Dubuque.

I was feeling a little sorry for myself because I will be in St. Louis next Mon-Thurs. and I thought that was going to be cold. Dubuque will be even colder. At least there won't be mosquitos.

I really love Dubuque. I haven't been there for 6 years or so, so I don't know what restaurants are still around the downtown, but there were and I'm sure still are many within walking distance of the Hotel Julien. If you have any weekend time to shop and lunch you should take the short drive to Galena IL. Actually the shops may stay open later, I'm not sure, but it's a charming little town full of artsy shops and great restaurants and things to do. Both towns make a nice little getaway.
Definitely the Midwest is better in spring and summer but those areas are very visitor friendly! Check out the aquarium in Dubuque and the little shops. You're also very close to Wisconsin and some cheese shops, breweries, etc. Beautiful scenery there though not so much this time of year.
