I'm admittedly a stickler for dates. This morning I grabbed some frozen meatballs out of the freezer chest and the date was from last summer (embarrassing!) I tossed them and went to the supermarket.
dh was like, but they are frozen so wouldn't they be fine? I can't argue too much with that...but as I said i'm a stickler for dates. So what do the peas say about dates of frozen items?

AFAIK they're safe, they just may not taste as good. I'm surprised you even checked the date, I almost never check dates on freezer stuff unless it's a total freezer cleanout.

Tossing expired food is something I'm really trying to stop doing automatically. Now I google the food item and how long it is good past the date then use my own judgement. I've just been wasting too much money tossing out perfectly good food items. I bet your meatballs were just fine. Frozen meat keeps a really long time.

If the date was a sell or use by date from last year and you froze in a timely manner, then I see no problem other than loss of flavor.

I've had items in my freezer (that I've prepared, dated, and frozen) for 2 years and they've been fine. Maybe a little loss of quality but certainly not enough to toss perfectly good food out. Most frozen foods last beyond any store dates.
