I am finally gettting around to posting what I have seen recently. Since Academy Awards are tonight I'm sticking to movies nominated or with actors that are nominated.
Hidden Figures - Really liked it. Important topic but movie was so entertaining. I saw it with my best friend and she liked it a lot too.
La La Land - I adored it. It really spoke to me in a way no other movie this year has. It reminded me of the movies I watched with my grandparents as a kid but done in a modern way. Definitely my favorite musical movie that I have seen as an adult. Emma Stone was so great!
Manchester By The Sea - I thought it was a good movie but I did not like it as much as the critics. It has some light moments but it was a little too realistic and depressing for me.
Hacksaw Ridge - This one surprised me. It is an absolutely remarkable story and the movie was so well done. We saw it because of the critical acclaim and because my husband likes war/battle movies but this movie is more than just that. I never expected to like it as much as I did. Highly recommend.
Florence Foster Jenkins - I was kind of meh on this on but I do think Hugh Grant was good in it.
Hell or High Water - This is a genre I really like (western/crime). I liked it but it didn't make a huge impression on me.
Today I am seeing Arrival. Really disappointed I didn't make it yet to see Moonlight, Lion, Fences or Nocturnal Animals.

I'm surprised. I didn't love it but thought it okay and could have developed into something good.

My ridiculous wants are:
- a custom Le Cornue range and refrigerator - I'm always falling in love with Dolce & Gabana and Valentino dresses - a Claude et Francois Lalanne chair - a pink golf cart - an Anthropologie velvet sofa - original art by some of my favorite artists - an antique printer cabinet and seed cabinet - and now a raspberry Kitchen Aid mixer!

I want a baby monkey but my family would kill me so I'll stick to watching them on YouTube. I want a panda. I seriously stalk so many panda channels on IG it's ridiculous. They are just so goofy and squishy. Me too! The number one thing on my bucket list is visiting Chengdu in China to see the pandas at the big giant panda breeding center there. My husband works for a Chinese company and goes to Bejing all the time. I'm hoping I can talk him into taking me one trip and visiting Chengdu.

I want the Raspberry Ice Kitchen Aid mixer. Despite the fact that I have a perfectly good KA mixer in a forest green from the 90's. It still works like a charm so no Raspberry Ice mixer for me. And FAR more ridiculous, I want a tiara. A real diamond tiara. Barring winning the Powerball, it will never happen but if I ever win, that's on my list in the total splurge category. Raspberry is just about my favorite color and I had no idea they made this. Now I desperately want it!

It is presidential protocol to not speak out about the new President. Though my guess is that Trump will leave them no choice but to do so.

Thank you for posting this. It comforts me to know that there are people who are paying attention and speaking out about what is going on with this administration.

I know this is a long shot, but if anyone doesn't love bright colors and wants to sell any of these kits, I would love to purchase them. I can do better than price you paid. This kit is just calling out to me. 💖 Thanks!!

Now that Trump's policies affect someone she cares about she speaks up. Too bad she didn't care enough about all the people everyone knew were going to be hurt by a Trump presidency enough to decline to be part of his inauguration.

I'm in the car right now on my way back from an area of North Carolina that has a lot of farms and wineries. I was talking to the owner of a 500 acre farm and the owner told me how upset he is about Trump. He told me that they have never been able to get US workers that wanted a job doing the hard physical work of farming. This is in a very conservative area of the state. I have no idea how this person voted but there is no question farmers in the state are distraught about losing workers some of whom these farmers consider family.

Not a literal compliment, but my adult son and daughter call me everyday. For me, that feels like a huge compliment. I know I am hard on myself but I figure I must have done something right for us to be so close.

Tickets went on sale last night for his concert in NC. I would love to go but I have no one here to go with. I would be fine with a 16 year old going. He is really talented and I admire what he is doing with his life.

I recorded this and just watched. I think it was the worst Grammy show I have ever seen. I'm a huge Adele fan but speaking as an Adele fan and someone who loved George Michael, that was painful to watch. I also adore Beyoncé but performance art does not work on tv. It came off as pretentious to me. I do think Beyoncé should have won album of the year. I think 25 was a pretty weak album and Beyoncé's album had so many better songs and was much stronger thematically. I think it is by far her best work. It's funny because Adele's was the only album I ran out and bought right when it came out, but in addition to Beyoncé, I preferred the albums from Drake, Justin Beiber and Rihanna to Adele's album.
I hated The Bee Gees tribute (totally missed the harmonies that made them so good) and all the country artists bored me. I don't really get the appeal of Katie Perry or Ed Sheerhan. I give Gaga credit for always being able to sing, but even she couldn't help that performance. Pretty much the only thing I did like was Bruno Mars. No he isn't Prince but I though he did justice to his memory and sounded great.
Finally, regarding the fashion I thought Adele, Jennifer Lopez (for the win) and Beyoncé were stunning. They each seem to get more beautiful every year. I didn't llike what Rihanna wore but her hair and makeup looked amazing. I though Kelsea Ballerini and Chrissy Teigan looked very pretty. I usually think Heidi Klum dresses terribly at award shows but I liked her dress; I hated her hair though. My worst dressed (not including those in costume like Gaga and Cee Lo) were Katy Perry (how does one look so bad in Tom Ford), Solange Knowles, Halsey and Taraji Henson (who normally looks great on the red carpet).

I'm so sorry for your loss. When my husband lost his father suddenly, it took a long time before he and his siblings felt okay. I guess I'm sharing that just because I want you to know your feelings of grief are normal, and time does help. My thoughts and prayers are with you while you deal with this very difficult loss.

I am so sorry. I have been there. My son also suffers from anxiety and depression and there have been times where he just couldn't see a way out and attempted self harm. It sounds like she is where she needs to be right now and I would respect her wishes for a little time and space. Maybe you could write her a letter telling her that you love her, will support her and that you want to be there for her when she is ready. Please feel free to pm me if you need someone to talk to. Sending you hugs and positive thoughts.

I just signed up. I've started looking into the requirements to run. I'm independent, but we have clean elections support here, so who knows... From reading your posts over the years, this makes me very happy, you are smart, well spoken and have always seemed like a caring person. Let us know if there is anything we can do to help.

When Helen Hunt was on Mad About You and I wore my hair in a bob, people would say I looked like her (I didn't). Now I usually hear Kate Winslet. Which basically means I have messy blonde hair - as they don't look anything like each other and I don't look like Kate Winslet either. I used to get Helen Hunt all the time too. No one lately though.

This is an interesting topic because in a situation like this you are trying to meet others definitions of looking polished in order to get a certain job. When I was a technical writer I usually worked in all male groups (in the financial and software industries) and their idea of looking polished were different than the ideas of women I knew in other parts of the company. I think you have received great suggestions but I would also say know your audience and your corporate culture.
Here are my suggestions:
- Add mascara to your makeup routine. Nothing too dramatic (no clumpy looks). If you don't like mascara, you can have your eyelashes dyed.
- I also think people underestimate the difference in having your eyebrows done. So I would start getting them waxed on a regular basis. Again nothing overly dramatic (not too thin or extremely arched).
- Make sure your foundation isn't too heavy and keep your blush and/or bronzer light. I would transition from lip gloss to lipstick. Start with a color you are comfortable with that works with your skin tone.
- If you are going to wear dresses or skirts, make sure your legs are shaved or waxed. Doesn't seem fair but people notice.
- Make sure your hair is appropriate for office. I have always had very long, wavy hair and it was a challenge in the workplace. It just didn't look professional when all the way down even when I used barrettes. A bun or a well groomed ponytail worked fine though. Obviously no crazy colors and I would add that if you color it, just make sure you keep up with appointments so roots aren't super noticeable. Use frizz control products if you need them (I always did in the summer when it was high humidity).
- If you have visible tattoos, try to wear clothes that covers them if they are large or color. My daughter has a sweet little sunflower on her ankle and I think she is having second thoughts now that she is working in a professional office.
- I always found dresses were easier than skirts because less matching to worry about but either works. They key is good tailoring, nothing too low (I saw women in other departments occasionally wear lowish tops and would later hear the men make sexist comments - not fair but unfortunately reality), and nothing sheer. If trousers are acceptable in your workplace, tailoring is crucial.
- Undergarments matter. Make sure you are wearing the correct bra size and invest in good ones.
- I adore color and pattern but I find many people perceive looking polished in a fairly narrow way. The safest colors are navy and black with accents of other colors in a blouse or scarf. The more conservative the item or cut, the more adventurous you can be with color (for example, a teal suit, a simple blue or green dress, a red blouse with classic black trousers). Skip "baby" pinks, purple all over, eyelet, anything overly lacey or ruffled, large abstract prints. I think it is fine to add small florals, polka dots and even animal prints in scarfs.
- Shoes matter and if you are dealing with customers who will see it, so do purses. They don't have to be expensive or designer, but they should free of scuffs and need to be in good condition. Don't go overly high if you wear heels. I do think a small heel is perceived as being more professional than totally flat, but if you can't walk well in heels, my opinion is to skip them. There are some professional looking flats, but I think it is more of a challenge to find them. I think structured bags tend to look more polished.
- Keep jewelry simple. No long dangly earrings. Diamonds and pearls are always fine but I think you can have a little fun with jewelry as long as you don't go overboard wearing a lot or anything that looks like it could be worn to a nightclub or is too boho.
Hope this helps. Wishing you good luck getting that promotion!
