Cool thread! So many great stories.
I’m named after a woman my father met in the USO coffee and doughnut center for American soldiers fighting in World War ll. She and her doctor husband ran the place. My brother and I were able to meet them in 1971 and my folks traveled there often before they died.
My daughter’s middle name is the name of my BF. Her first name is the name of a mountain range DH and I have backpacked in for 40+ years. As it turns out, she’s uncannily similar to my BF in personality and habits.

Yup. After several family members.
Think "Renesmee" (from Twilight Saga)

We named our oldest daughter's middle name after my sister, with a slightly different spelling/pronounciation (Susan/Susann). We didn't tell anyone the name until after she was born. When we told our family her middle names, pronounced Sooz-Ann, my pushy mom said "Oh, she is named after me!" (Barbara Ann) and proceeded to tell all of her friends about her "Namesake". Uh, no, but to keep peace, we never corrected her but the baby book tells the right story and our girls know the story. :}

I was named to spite my paternal grandmother, who was an absolute wretched hag to my mom from the day they met. Nana asked (begged, screamed, demanded) my mom to name me Marlene. No one ever knew why that name was so important to her, especially since she had 4 girls of her own, but it was an obsession with her. Needless to say, my parents were having none of it and named me what they wanted, which pissed my grandmother off forever (Italian grandmothers can REALLY hold grudges). Nana never, ever liked me...

I love this thread! My middle name is my Aunt's name. I also used that for my daughter middle name and she has used it for one of her daughter's middle name. All of my children and grandchildren have either a first name or middle name after family members. One of my grandsons has his mothers maiden name for his first name and he and his father(my son) have the same middle name. Probably my favorite though is a grandson that has my maiden name for his middle name - Burghardt.

My first name, no. My middle name is after my mom’s sister. There’s a bunch of us in the family that are named after her.

I was named after my paternal grandfather Benjamin (a feminine alternative) in the Ashkenazi Jewish tradition of naming the first born child after the last relative who died. I don’t have a middle name. DS's middle name is also Benjamin, because nobody else had died when he was born. His first name, Ian, was the first name DH and I could agree on after nine months of arguing. DH likes the books of Ian Fleming.

My first name is my own, not named after anyone. It's uncommon, but funnily enough for the first time in my life I'm one of 4 with the same name in my church, and one even spells hers like I do. Makes life interesting! My middle name is Jane, which was my grandmother's nickname.

I was named after my maternal grandfather’s younger sister, who had died when she was only 3. Grandpa always kept a photo of her on the mantel and my mum decided when she was quite young that she would name her first daughter after her. My middle name is because I was born on the feast of Our Lady Help of Christians in a Catholic hospital, and mum and dad didn’t have a middle name chosen.

Yes, she ( great aunt)was a jealous miserable, manipulative bitch. She could get my father to anything she wanted. She was angry that her son named his daughter after her sister. She was jealous that I took piano lessons. She talked my father out of stopping those.
She made me ugly clothing. I mean ugly, then got angry because I would not wear it. The clothing she made for her granddaughters were cute.
I wanted to take ballet lessons. She talked my dad out of it.
The funny thing was she was named after her mean nasty grandmother. And didn’t like the name.
There will never be another megmc.

My maternal grandmother's middle name was Patch, which I absolutely adored (and she absolutely despised!!). When I was pregnant with my daughter I told her that I was going to use her middle name if it was a girl and she went batshit crazy on me for the one and only time in my life. She was always so soft spoken and grandmotherly (unlike my paternal grandmother, mentioned in a previous post!!) so I was completely shocked and knew she was serious. Needless to say, the name Patch died with Gram.

I was named after the teenaged girl who lived next door to my mom when she was really little - she thought she was beautiful and always said she'd name a daughter "Deirdre." My girls are 1. named after my grandmother who died when I was pg (Hannah); 2. just a favorite name - always said I'd have a girl with this name (Molly); 3. another name we just liked (Olivia); 4. name that my daughter 2 came up with when we told the kids we were having another baby (Lucy.)

My middle name, Marie, is a family name given to the oldest daughter. I carried on the tradition with DD, and as far as I can tell she is the 7th generation to carry that as a middle name. My first name was a default choice because they were so convinced that I was a boy they had no girl names picked out. Since they couldn't agree on a girl's name, I was saddled with the feminine version. Was supposed to be Anthony and called Tony, so I ended up with Toni (not short for anything). Since Mom had a nickname, she didn't want any of us to have nicknames, hence the shortened version. Never could figure out why a nickname was okay if I'd been a boy, but not for a girl? Both sisters have family names as middle names as well. What mom didn't realize was that they all rhymed (Marie, Leigh, Dee). We are from the South, where both first/middle names are commonly used. It was always rather sing song and comical when she would say all three names at once! freecharlie - You win for best name story! giatocj - What is it with grandmothers and naming children? We gave DD two middle names. When my late MIL found out, she went nuts. Did everything she could to stop us from doing it but never could give us a good reason. We ignored her and did what we wanted. To her dying day, MIL would never use the second middle name. She would have things monogrammed for her and purposely leave that one out.

I'm not named after anyone, but some of my boys are. Oldest DS is named after a soap opera character on Ryan's Hope and my maternal grandfather, so his name is Ryan William. My second DS is named after his dad and my husband's uncle who passed away two days after DS was born, so his name is James Thomas. I named my third DS Corey Michael because I liked it and I did have a student named Corey that was so sweet. Youngest DS isn't named after anyone, we just liked his name, Riley Benjamin.

**GypsyGirl**Even better is that my mom originally named me something else and my dad really wanted my current name and wouldn't talk to me for 3 days until it was changed. My dad said that never happened. My mom swears it did. I find it pretty funny

I was named after a friend of my mom's from high school. I never met her until I was in my 20s. I went to an Urgent Care and the nurse had my name. As we were talking, she said I reminded her of someone she went to high school with, she said my mannerisms were very similar to this friend. She also said this friend married and had the same last name as me. Turns out, the friend was my mom and this was the friend I was named after. Small World.
My dad picked out my middle name and I found out when I was an adult that my middle name was the same middle name as his first wife.

My son's second middle name is Neil for my father, grandfather, and greatgreat grandfather
My older daughter's second middle name is Grace for my MIL
My younger daughter's first name is a family name on my dad's side- his sister who was named for their great grandmother who was named for her mother and grandmother. Her first middle name is my Gran's name and her second is the parish in Scotland my dad's family is from.

This is a great thread!!
I was born on my grandma's birthday. Her name was Maxine Elizabeth. My parents named me Lisa Beth (sorta sounds like Elizabeth) Of course Lisa was a VERY popular name in the 60's. Like Leone I think my life would have been different if my name was Maxine!!
My dd wants to name her future daugher (way future) Ruby after my other grandma. We both just adore that name!

I was named after a Waylon Jennings song called "Anita, You're Dreaming." I didn't get to hear it until I was in my 20s. My middle name (Jeanine) I always thought was a derivative of my mother's (Jean), but on his deathbed, my father told me his cousin had a girlfriend named Jeanine and he just thought it was a pretty name.
Our oldest has the middle name of Brittony because DH's middle name is Britton. Her first name was just one we liked.
Our youngest is named Shona because it's a Gaelic form of John, which is DH's first name. Her middle name is Grace because the meaning of my first name is supposedly "graceful" (horribly ironic if you know me) and so she is named after both of us.

My name was a VERY popular name in the early 70’s DD- first name L- diminutive of DH’s gran (and his moms middle name) Second-M -my paternal grandmother (MIL first name) Third-M- my maternal GM’s middle name Asked DH if he wanted to add his paternal GM in bit he said no Once DD was born we found out that his paternal GM had the same middle name as my maternal GM so she got all 4 great grandmothers
The use of MIL’s names was a coincidence which I may or may not (in a fit of hormones) pointed out to my FIL!!!
L was always going to be the name for a girl (I wanted Aoife but realized that if/when we moved back to Canada no one would every get it right!!) Only boys name we both liked was Aaron but I got laughed at every time I said it...... I could not pronounce it “properly” in Northern Ireland!!!
