My first name was after a high school friend of my dad. No idea about my middle name. My parents are both gone so I can't ask.

Both first and middle name, yes. Great grandparents and grandparents. My parents were big proponents of using family names. My kids ended up with a family name and a name we both liked.

Not really named after her, exactly, but when my mom was pregnant with me, she was watching "Love Me Tender" with Elvis and Debra Padget. She loved the way she spelled her name and like the name so chose to name me Debra.

Apparently my middle name was my dad's girlfriend's name. LOL!
My mom didn't have a middle name so never thought of giving me one. My dad was insistent on one and what it should be. Mom didn't really care, since it never entered her mind. Time passes and they divorce and my mom for most of my life has bad mouthed my dad and throws out the "I'm sure he named you after some girlfriend" and I try to let it roll off because of the hard feelings and she was always had something horrible to say about him.
Many years pass and I am talking to my aunt who is the only living member of my dad's side of the family and she one day says "Your dad had a girlfriend named XXXX and I think he named you after her."
Confirmation. I just laugh. I like my middle name so all is well. But it does make for a good story.

I was named after the actress Rhonda Fleming, as was every other Rhonda I've ever met. My middle name was after my mom's sister.

My first and middle name is a first/middle-name combo that we can trace back to a girl born in 1633!
My grandmother is the last of seven children, and before she was born there was a sister who passed away very young (I think she was about 4 y.o., this was in the 1920's). This sister had my exact first and middle name combo, but was called Kitty for short. When she passed, and my grandmother was born a few years later, grandma was given the name Kitty First Middle.
My aunt (grandma's youngest DD) has a variation of the name, and I have the 1633-original first/middle-name combo.
My DD has the middle name as her middle name. It felt weird to have a child with the exact same name as me, so we only chose one of them. If I am lucky, one of my DD's will continue this almost 400-year tradition. There hasn't been a girl in EVERY generation with this first/middle-name combo, but close.
So I was named after probably at least 10 women in my family. It feels nice to continue such a tradition with my DD.

I was named after my Aunt Reba. I have my mom’s middle name. In school the teachers tried to call me Rebecca, and I refused to answer. That wasn’t my name!
Once Reba McEntire became well known, people I would initially meet would say, “Oh, like Reba McEntire!” I’ve heard it so many times!!

The naming tradition in my mom's family left her 4 brothers sharing 2 names so she swore she would never name any of her kids after a relative.
We all have names that were known but not common (none in the top 50). Many people assume I was named for a popular figure but mom swears it's not true and they just liked the name. I have the same middle name as an aunt but it was never linked to being named after her, just picked because it went with my first name.

I was named after both of my grandmothers. My parents couldn’t agree on a name, and so my dad sent flowers to my and and to me (in the nursery?), with a card that had my name on it. My middle name is Maxine. I know a couple of you have mentioned you got lucky not getting stuck with it. And my younger self would agree. When kids at school would find out my middle it, it was awful. BUT my entire family (on both sides) have always called me Max, Maxie or Maxine....... and my dad always said I was definitely his mother (Freida Maxine), who passed before I was born.
Both of my sons were adopted as pre-schoolers, so their first names Are their birth names. DS1’s middle name is after my ex and my uncle. DS2’s middle name is after a dear friend.

I was named after the heroine from a trashy novel my mom was reading. My second mane came from a candy striper at the hospital.

My son’s two first names were named for my parents. Dad’s name Phonetic Mom’s name in Japanese and my last name. I was very sneaky. I did all of this on purpose. I’m probably being dense but what do you mean you did it on purpose? Fascinating thread! I wasn’t named after anyone 🙂 I named my son totally on purpose. My sister and I have awful names. Even family members can’t spell them. Son’s names are easy, popular and captured both parents’ names in the process.

no, and i didn't name my kids after anyone either. although my STBX's dad was terminally ill while i was pregnant with my youngest son and ex wanted to name him "ronald bernard last name" after his dad. i said no way... none of our other children are named after anyone and not fair to my dad (sorry you aren't dying, couldn't get your name in there dad). luckily, my FIL was on MY side and said he always hated his name and to please pick a better name. i loved that man just a wee bit more after that. rip ron.

I'm named after a character in an animated movie that came out a few years before I was born, and was quite popular for a few years, then dwindled out to almost no usage at all. The name can be a diminutive of another name (that I happen to despise), so people sometimes assume I was named the longer name. Nope, I have this as my given name on my birth certificate, not the long form, and would not answer to the other name. Funny thing is because of the short-term popularity of this name, I had 2 other classmates with this name in my (very small) high school. All 3 of us had this as our given name (not the long form). Anyone want to guess? Wendy (not Gwendolyn or Gwen!) from Peter Pan To this day, when I meet other people with this name, I can usually pinpoint their ages to within about an 8-year range of my birth year - there are 3 of us in my church parish (not the same ones from my HS, LOL!) and we're all close to the same age. My parents chose the name just because it was a bit unique (at the time) and they really liked it. None of my kids are named after anyone in the family, just names we liked that are easily spelled, easily pronounced, and have no diminutive form. (As my DH says, when you hear it you should be able to spell it without asking "is that with an E or an I?", or whatever.) Fun thread!

Yep, I'm named after Jayne Mansfield - dad thought she was beautiful and loved big boobs. Hope I have a better ending. We've always pronounced it Jaynie tho. I only knew one other girl with the name (in high school) and she pronounced it like I did.

I wasn't going to be named after a family member but I was born on my mom's favorite cousin's birthday so my middle name is after her. I gave all three of mine family/saint names as middle names. MIL had a freaking melt down and has told me many times over the last decade or more that her boys all had family names. I reply every damn time that our kids have family names too. She also refuses to use my correct middle name. She insists on using my maiden name as my middle. I remind her every time that I kept my middle name because it is a family name. She is a stubborn one for sure. Interestingly enough her name is now a stereotype which makes me giggle.

I was born in 1960 and was also named after Debbie Reynolds. My sister came along in 1963 and was named after Jackie Kennedy. My mother gave me her own name, Monika, as my middle name. I didn't care for it much when I was in school because it was so popular that there were alway 3 or 4 girls named Debbie in each classroom, but after school days were over I've grown used to it. It's my name.
I did name my only child after someone but I spelled it differently (the main spelling) and he ended up with Alexander. A strong, easy to spell, every one has heard of it name. He goes by Alex.

I was named Susan in the 1950’s. My mom said a character from a soap Opera had it. Along with a million other girls. I hated my very common name. I also had the most common last name possible.
I’ve grown used to it.
My kids names all cane from books or songs, with middle names from family members
