Are there actual writers for these reno shows or is it fly by the seat of your pants?
I cannot watch Flip or Flop. It is like nails on a chalk board to me. Between always crying about how much money they are loosing in upgrading something, to the wife saying "I mean" every other sentence, it is just annoying.
On the other hand, Property Income, I can watch it all day long. Scott sounds intelligent, caring and funny. The Property Brothers the same, intelligent, funny, et.
What do you all think?

I think there are some writers, but what makes the shows good or not is all in the personality of the host. The better hosts will make a better show. They are better at thinking on their feet and naturally have a better way of phrasing things.

i think they are scripted to a certain extent. like love it or list it.....i can't stand that show. i think the homeowners are told to act like assholes and be bitchy with each other and the hosts. the hosts are bitchy to each other too....it's too much for me. i do like fixer upper the best...i think it's also scripted somewhat but i can totally tolerate it.

I think they all receive some type of "direction". These are just normal people with a home improvement show.
I really love Fixer Upper and am looking forward to the next season.

Hate Flip or Flop. Hate how they glamorize taking such HUGE risks with their personal finances...borrowing from family...it's stupid. The wife. Everything is a crisis. And every crisis is a shocking surprise. You would think after all the renovations these two have supposedly done, they would learn that there are always things that pop up. Duh.
Love Income Property. Scott is just hot.

All these shows have a certain script or pattern they follow, although I think it is more they are coached as to what they should say than actually a written script. I think Income Property and The Property Brothers work better because there is no competition or drama over unexpected challenges. These guys are talented renovators who really deliver a great product.
Flip or Flop I record so I can zip through and see the transformation at the end. I roll my eyes at the weekly drama of unexpected termite, mold or structural damage and then they always seem to end up with a substantial profit in the end.
Love It or List It is the worst and, after watching 2 episodes, everyone knows the script/pattern the show follows. What I find interesting is the original show never seems to have a reno budget over $80K and the LIOLI2 (set in Vancouver) seems to always have massive $150K+ budgets. With this show, I will watch to see the budget and then fast forward to the end. The drama between the partners, one loving and one so ready to move on, is so contrived.

I like Love it or List it Vancouver but only because it is relevant to my area. I like to see the areas they're in, figure it out. The dynamics between the hosts I can do with out.

Love It or List It is intolerable and seems very scripted. The contrived competition and bickering between the designer and agent is awful. Same with the homeowners. The premise is also foolish to me--either you agree to use your money toward renovating and make it what you want and need, or do the minimum you need to sell and use your money toward your new home that better suits your needs.
Flip or Flop makes me change the channel. He cuts so many corners.
Love Fixer Upper. I think they are more directed than scripted. Anyone notice they use the same color scheme in every reno--the light grayish-aqua blue that's popular now? Though I am not into her style of decorating, I like her finished product, and they are likeable.
Love Income Property too. I also think he is loosely directed but unscripted for the most part.

Turns out the House Hunters is all set up...apparently, they won't even film if the couple hasn't bought a place or is in escrow. Often the houses they look at aren't even for sale, but I still watch it.

My friend told me they had already been living in the property for over a year. We watch it because we're amazed at how much house you can buy elsewhere.

I HATE Love ir or List it. It's so fake and scripted. I also wonder why people think it's worth it to make themselves look bad on tv. I happened to have HGTV on last night while we were doing something and LIOLI came on. The husband came off like such an asshole, my dh said, "If I were that wife, i'd say screw the house, you can keep it. I'm outta here." I then told him the plotline and he was astonished at how I could predict what was gong to happen. I just don't see why that show is popular. The bickering between the couples and between the realtor and designer is both fake AND irritating.
Ditto with Flip or Flop. They're just so unlikable.
I know HH is fake, but I still love that show. I just like looking at the different houses and deciding which one I would pick and seeing what housing is like around the country and world.

I also really like Fixer Upper. Chip and Joanna are very likable. And I am amazed and what they can do with what they start with.
I love watching HHI. Some of the homes they have in say Italy are strange and cool at the same time, There was one that had three levels, but you could only get to each from steps outside the house. There was no true kitchen and something else was missing. Anyway the lady got it for $15,000. !! The view was truly amazing.

I agree - the writing and the drama is just terrible.
I love the concept of LIOLI - I think that is a situation many people find themselves in. If they were to let each episode be unique, no drama, no yelling, it would be so much better! The show would not be predictable and more like real life.

I like Love It or List It (the original) despite the predictable bickering and script. I don't like LIoLI2 because of the hosts. They're cheesy if you ask me. I love Flip or Flop. Their script is predictable too but I love seeing the transformation of those houses. It's amazing to me how many times the wife seems to have the right instincts for what the market wants.

Never heard of Sarah Richardson! Along with Candace Olson, Sarah is the BEST HGTV show going. I only wish she would film more episodes for release in the US. Love her.

New shows in January, from what I hear. There was a marathon of Flip or Flop yesterday...can't seem to sit through that one.

I used to be an HGTV watcher big time but there are no more craft shows and the other shows are a bunch of tantrum throwing adults. I hate hate hate the bickering on almost all shows on TV anymore. So now, on HGTV, I just tune in for the first five minutes and then come back for the last five minutes to see the design. I do like the one with Chip and the wife with long dark hair. They don't fight. I don,t have unpleasant people in my life so I certainly won,t put them on my TV.
Where is Carol Duvall and Candice Olsen? I love Candice Olsen and I wish they had even one crafting show. There is that swap meet thing but I want a craft show where the entire show is crafting.
I can't imagine that rhey haven't lost viewers in the last few years as everytime HGTV is discussed people are complaining.

I wish HH would just get better scripts. Okay, we get it, you don't like these houses - but the never ending "eww, the paint color" "ewww the carpet" "ewww the floors" ... good grief. I just look to see if they're in areas we're thinking of moving to - if not, I ignore them now.
Can't stand Flip or Flop - that Tarek guy is that guy in HS who got the "most likely to stay a jerk" award. ugh. Every house is like his FIRST house "OMG, I can't believe it, OMG, this is killing us" ... don't "let" the wife decorate with what she feels the house needs, but tries to go cheap. I can't even have it on as noise in the house.
I miss Ground Force with Alan Titmarsh - the UK version. We all wanted "water features" after watching that show. Now we've got all these fountains and no water allowed to be put in them because of the drought in So. Cal ... sad faces. Before the "designers" went crazy, I liked Changing Rooms (UK) and Trading Spaces (US) - but then it started going for shock value and that was the end of them.
ETA - and I LOVED Location, Location, Location (UK) ... I DVR'd BBC America just for that show!

I love to see all of the renos, even though some of the hosts are awful. Turn the sound off, people!! I want Design on a Dime back! and more High/Low Project - although it is a little disingenuous to have a professional carpenter making some of the items but not including his time into the final cost of the project. I would never buy a house that the Flip or Flop couple worked on. I think he tries to take too many short cuts and I don't find him trustworthy. Remember the one where he tried to fill in the pool with chunks of concrete? a professional came in and told him that he could not do that, but without the cameras rolling I don't put anything past him.

I LOVE Fixer Upper, that couple just seem so genuine to me. And Chip cracks me up with his goofiness!
I also love Property Brothers, I like how they act with each other, some of their promos are pretty funny.
Remember Room by Room with Matt and Sheri? I think was one of the very earliest shows on HGTV. I used to love what they did, but wondering how it would fly now.
