About this time last year I posted this thread about a challenge whereby you cook a different country's cuisine every week or two weeks: Cooking My Way Through the Alphabet from A to ZI didn't end up doing it last year, but I mentioned it to DD yesterday and she was really keen. She actually wants to do it every week instead of every two weeks, so we end up going through the alphabet twice. I have decided to start off with Armenian - and as we speak I have pork marinating for the khorovats and a nutmeg cake in the oven. I'm also doing Armenian Rice Pilaf and Boeregs. Thanks to everyone on the original thread, I have a pretty good list already. Does anyone have any other suggestions for cuisines (especially the letters for which I don't yet have at least two options) or suggestions for your favourite dishes for any of these cuisines? A - Armenian, Argentinian B - Brazilian, Burmese C - Cajun, Creole, Cambodian, Chinese D - Danish, Dutch E - Ethiopian, Egyptian F - French, Filipino G - Greek, German H - Hungarian I - Indian, Israeli, Italian J - Japanese, Javanese, K - Korean L - Lebanese M - Moroccan, Mexican N - Nigerian, Nepalese O - Omani P - Persian, Polish Q - Qinghai R - Russian, Romanian S - Scandinavian, Swedish T - Turkish U - Ukranian V - Vietnamese W - Welsh X - Xiaoshan or similar Chinese, Xhosa Y - Yemeni Z - Zimbabwean, Zulu And does anyone else want to try it? Even if you can't commit to doing it every week or two?

I = Israeli
There are some good Israeli cuisine cookbooks out there. There are a lot of similarities with Egyptian cuisine. Although, I see you have Jerusalem, so maybe that is what Israeli cuisine is called in Australia.
I may try a few new cuisines this year - It all depends on how much time I have to teach myself some new techniques. I will definitely follow your threads about this - your cooking inspires me.

You don't have anything Dutch in there - can go under several options T or N for The Netherlands, D for Dutch, H for Holland ... I haven't made them myself but there's a Dutch bakery in Malvern that makes oliebollen and they are delicious (sweet, a bit like a heavy doughnut with raisins) I have made boerenkool but not with fresh kale, only with the jars you can get from Aldi when they have Dutch or German produce...so you could keep an eye out for it and keep it until you are ready or have a go at the fresh version. You can buy Rookworst at Aldi all the time. ETA: actually keep an eye on Aldi for when they have specific nationality foods, you could make it easier for yourself & cook that nationality when they have those foods.

Dutch. Filipino. Italian. And then I googled, and wikipedia had a list of cuisines that might help you out.

I = Israeli Although, I see you have Jerusalem, so maybe that is what Israeli cuisine is called in Australia. Thanks Elaine, I am going to change it to Israeli. I think I had added Jerusalem from a suggestion on the other thread.

If you want another K, I looked at favorite dishes in Kazakhstan and saw Laghman noodles. I ate this recently at a Uyghur restaurant and it was delicious! The Uyghur people who run the restaurant near me are from China, but there are Uyghur people in several countries. If you want to do Haitian, I recently saw a beautiful video about Haitian Squash soup which is made for new year's to celebrate Haitian independence from France. www.youtube.com/watch?v=i92gcZ_NpN8What a great project!

So how was the first dinner? Interested to hear how it went and what you thought of the food. It was really good, and of the four dishes I would make three of them again. Entree was BoeregsMain course was Pork Khorovats & Armenian Rice Pilaf. The rice pilaf was very bland. If I made it again I would put some spices and nuts in it.
And for dessert, Armenian Nutmeg Cake.

Switzerland , You could do a cheese fondue or a raclette That's exactly what DD wants to do when we get to S! She spent her birthday in Switzerland in November, and went out for fondue and loved it.

You have to make lumpia for the Filipino week. If you are looking for a second H country, will Hong Kong work? Kenya for K? I'm looking forward to following your adventure!

It looks delicious - esp the nutmeg cake! I looked at the recipes, the pilaf is interesting, did you add the noodles too? I haven't seen that before.

Afghani- we love their eggplant/ curry dishes and their charcoal dishes are yummy too. Another vote for Filipino - adobe pork belly or chicken wings. Easy to make and very delicious. In our house we have several cultural backgrounds - Indian/Burmese, Filipino, Welsh and a bit of Australian thrown in as well! My daughter loves experimenting with new dishes so I shall challenge her with some of the ideas in this thread for sure. Corinne
