I'm not going to post anything on FB because nothing has really happened yet but I am really happy for my dd. She is finishing up her bachelors in Biomedical Engineering. She wants to go to grad school and get a PhD in Biomechanics. She is interested in developing prosthetics for children. She has worked really hard in school and it has been a struggle as she has dealt with mental illness issues while at school.
She has applied to 7 grad programs. Her goal was to get a graduate assistantship that would pay for her tuition, stipend, etc. She looked at schools all over the country and Pitt had the most cutting edge research that applied to what she wanted. Biomed assistantships generally pay the most of any engineering discipline plus there are more assistantships in engineering than any other field so her odds were pretty good.
Last night she got an email from Pitt saying they were VERY interested in her and are paying to bring her there for 3 days to show her what they can offer her. She knows there are 4 of these up for grabs with faculty that she wants to work with so her odds are pretty good. She is so happy right now. I am really happy that if she gets it, she would still only be 3 hours from home. She would also be close to her boyfriend's family if an emergency came up. The other schools she has applied to are all over the country so I would be really happy to have her close to home.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update 1/16- Last night she got a second offer for a full assistantship to the University of Delaware! Full tuition for a PhD plus a stipend and a full research position! While the location is not where she really wants to be, the program is really good! They are flying her out in March to wine and dine her!

She spent a year working with a prosthetist. She thought she wanted to go that route but it bugged her that they were very limited on how much they could help their patients. She wants to be on the design end so that she can work to help eliminate a lot of these issues. She also loves working with kids. She has also said she is interested in animal prosthetics.

That’s cool! So glad that she knows what she wants to do and is on her way to accomplishing it. I have a biomedical engineering daughter that decided to go on to dental school.

Wonderful news! And Pitt is an amazing school. The city itself has so much to offer a young professional. Congratulations on raising such a successful and compassionate young woman.

Great news! Wishing her the best for one the the valued positions!
Our children deserve the best, those working with kids and those who need the help. Hopefully your DD could be the one to help bring costs down sooner than later!

My DS is 12 and since he was 6 he has told us that he is going to be a biomedical vet engineer because he wants to make prosthetics for animals. It's super cool to hear of someone headed down that road. Hope that it all works out for your DD and she ends up with a great place for the next part of her education.
