The other thread intrigued me because one pea said her husband preferred the fake crap. I prefer the fake crap too!
My whole family worked at Cracker Barrel in the 90s and I hated the real maple syrup! Blech! I’ve never bought the real kind. Now I’m wondering how my kids are going to react when they find out about pure maple syrup. Are they going to think they were raised badly?!?! I’m just kidding but it will be quite humorous.
Any other fake syrup lovers out there?

I was buying real maple syrup and the kids all begged me to go back to Buttery fake stuff. So that’s what I buy now! I don’t use it, so it makes no difference to me.

I grew up on the fake kind, and the cheapest fake kind that exsisted then. I only use real now, because I stopped eating "fake" food in general. I like both though.

I hate the fake stuff, it's all we ever had growing up. Now I buy real, but I actually don't like it for pancakes, I just use it as an ingredient in recipes. DH likes syrup for his pancakes, but I usually do butter and cinnamon sugar.

I think there just might be a provision in the Canadian Charter that would allow revocation of citizenship for preferring fake over 100% genuine maple syrup.

We grew up with the fake corn syrup stuff, but at some point in my teens my mom started buying real maple syrup (probably because almost all of my chow hound brothers were out of the house, LOL) and after having that there was no going back. I’ll own it, I’m a total real maple syrup snob. My DH and DD tapped our maple trees a couple springs ago and tried to boil it down into syrup. After cooking it endlessly for days and days (first ruining some of my upper cabinets from the continuous steam, and then moving the operation outside to a propane turkey cooker), it was almost to the point where it could be considered syrup and DH got sick of babysitting it and called it good. Except after buying all the other stuff, he refused to buy the fabric filter thing to filter out all the sugar sand. That kind of thing drives me insane. Why go to all that trouble and then stop a few hours and a few dollars short of doing it right? So what we ended up with was many jars of some very watery maple flavored almost syrup. What a waste.

We always had Mrs. Buttersworth as children.
Cannot stand the stuff now, it’s pure maple syrup for us (although I prefer a scant drizzle of honey on pancakes and waffles)

The kids and I like the real thing. DH loves almost all things maple but prefers corn syrup for pancakes. 🤔

I like the real stuff but I don’t mind some brands of fake syrup. Some of them are so cloying or even sour, though. I enjoy McDonalds’ hotcake syrup 😂

I grew up with imitation but we use the real thing now. Some of my kids prefer to dust a little powdered sugar on their pancakes so we have that too.
I remember eating at my grandparents and they had Karo syrup, both light and dark. The thought of that now makes my teeth hurt.

I am from Vermont...I think I had real Maple syrup in my baby bottle.
So I have used real maple syrup all of my life...and a lot of it. Not just on pancakes but for everything from baking to on ice cream. Most of it boiled by my father.
I have never bought it. I consider myself lucky and I couldn't imagine my life without maple syrup.

I prefer the real stuff.
My dh & his cousin rebuilt their great grandfather’s sugar house 20 years ago. It is in a beautiful location next to a pond. Yankee magazine took photos several years ago & often uses it.
Soooo much work to make it. Truly a labor of love, every $ earned has gone into more & updated equipment.
Ds used to insist on bringing his own syrup to his school’s pancake breakfast.

I have bought real maple syrup precisely twice-- once from the farmers' market and once from the grocery store. Perhaps because childhood exposure means that I always thought of Mrs. Butterworth's as "real" syrup, I found the real stuff to be sorely lacking in any sort of actual maple flavor, which was extremely disappointing as both times I splurged on it to use it in a recipe.
So, now I don't make recipes that call for real maple syrup, and I buy Mrs. Butterworth's for the handful of times I make french toast.

We only buy real, but I grew up with the fake stuff and I'm sure DH did, too.

The fake crap has added sugar (and preservatives!) in it, so it tastes “better”.
But the real stuff is better for you. And it tastes perfectly fine. Everyone in our house is perfectly happy to have the real stuff on their pancakes and waffles when we have them.
But if I am being honest, I would rather eat the fake stuff. Because it is yummy, and I have an insatiable sweet tooth. 😂

I grew up with fake (even with my hippy parents) - I don’t think I have ever bought fake myself - so for 25 years only the real stuff. When the kids were little we did make pancakes a lot - but now we rarely use it...maybe once every few months with crepes.

I much prefer just melted butter on pancakes and waffles - syrup is too sweet. That said, occasionally I’ll have syrup on French Toast.
Dh and I like pure maple, the boys prefer buttery Mrs. Butterworth’s. Since the odd recipe calls for maple syrup as a sweetener, I always keep a small bottle in the fridge.

We keep both around. I like both, for different reasons and with different things.
My dh, in the other hand, only likes the fake stuff. 🤦♀️He’s like that in general.

I can’t recall the last time I had imitation but I do remember the first time I tried real maple syrup. Thought it was horrible and it took a while to get used to it. Same with butter vs margarine. Now I can’t imagine going back.

I grew up on the fake, cheap fake, too. I prefer real for the same reason, I’m trying hard to stop eating all the fake, processed foods. Dh and dd do not like real so we also have fake

I bought real maple syrup but the kids prefer the fake stuff. I have been using the real maple syrup myself, but we rarely use syrup so it has lasted forever. I buy the brand with no HFCS for the kids so at least it might not be quite as bad. Lol

Now I can’t imagine going back. Me, too. Family friends have a maple syrup business, so I get it from them. I've also dumped margarine and buy organic butter.
