Updating with answers: Q: Pattern you like best? A: AB pattern with ties: www.instructables.com/id/AB-Mask-for-a-Nurse-by-a-Nurse/ Printable pattern: content.instructables.com/ORIG/F4B/DL99/K81UHNOP/F4BDL99K81UHNOP.pdf Antwerp pattern (can alter to use with elastic): www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcQ69_ANsRA&feature=youtu.be freesewing.org/blog/facemask-frenzy/ Mask with pocket *: northmemorial.com/covid-19-donations/?fbclid=IwAR39xMZHdraMx_T2eK493XysZt45fl5iP0vOM9Wm0bbRhlnxIWH6- Mask with pocket and optional nose wire:

Bias tape surgical mask with flexible nose wire:
Q: Ear loops vs. head? A: Preference depends on individual wearing. Those who want a snug fit are better opting for ties or elastic that go on the back of the head. Ear loops are easier to slip on, but some have issues with ear fatigue. To alleviate that, you can use a mask extender. A: To make adjustable ear loops, slip a bead through the elastic. Pony beads work well for 1/4" elastic.
Q: Type of fabric to use? A: Fabric: 100% cotton (180 count) for both layers or 100% cotton for outer and flannel for inner layer. Batiks or Kona is best because they’re tightly woven. Note that while flannel is softer, it's also warmer. Comparison of fabrics: www.newswise.com/articles/testing-shows-type-of-cloth-used-in-homemade-masks-makes-a-difference-doctors-sayQ: Add wire nose bridge? What type of wire? A: Easy way is to make a small pocket with ribbon or fabric sewing 3 sides and leaving one side open so wire can be removed before wash. You can use twist ties, floral wire, pipe cleaners, even a section from prong fasteners. A: Aluminum nose strips sold on ebay, Amazon, etc.
Q: Alternatives to elastic and elastic questions: A: Grosgrain ribbon, shoelace cord, cotton clothesline string, bias tape. A: When buying elastic, check reviews to see what people are actually receiving. There are various types such as braided and knit elastic. There is also string (similar to that on surgical masks) that some sellers refer to as elastic. A: Elastic also comes in different widths. Don't use anything wider than 1/4" for ear loops.
Q: Making own bias tape. A: How to cut continuous strip: makeit-loveit.com/make-continouos-strip-bias-tape-bindingA: Helps to iron them into the double fold bias tape shape before you start to sew them on (fold in half lengthwise right side out, press, then fold the raw long edges in toward the first fold and press again so all the long raw edges are enclosed). Q: Additional info? A: Wash all fabrics with hot water before cutting/assembling (due to shrinkage). A: Make interior a different color or use the wrong side of fabric so that is easy to tell which side has been against the face (prevents accidentally touching the potentially contaminated outer side). A: Sewing clips are handy to use to hold fabric pieces together in lieu of pins.

I was worried about the pipe cleaner wire too. I have seen where people are sewing a little 3 sided channel at the nose and making a small cut on the 4th side to slip The pipe cleaner in and leaving it open so The pipe cleaner could be removed before washing. The masks I made for my sister's business I did some with elastic and some with ties because she had people that preferred different ones.

Finally have all the materials necessary to make masks. There are so many patterns out there now, that I'm wondering which one worked the best for those with elastic and those without. Also did any of you use wire in the nose bridge? I saw some people using pipe cleaners, but wouldn't that rust in the wash? I think the AB Mask is the best pattern for having fabric ties/no elastic. I wore one out this morning and it worked great - lots of coverage. I am not using wire because I think it will rust and/or deteriorate in the wash. The professional masks with wire in them are disposable and not subjected to washing. I found that the AB Mask fit quite well on my face without wire, so am not worried about it. It also is a mask that is large enough that it can be worn over an N-95 mask which does have the wire.

This is the mask pattern I have been using. I bought a bias tape maker and bias foot that really sped things up after the learning curve.

Perfect. Thank you so much. One tip though if you try this one and you’re making your own ties. When you have the strips ready for the ties, it really helps to iron them into the double fold bias tape shape before you start to sew them on (fold in half lengthwise right side out, press, then fold the raw long edges in toward the first fold and press again so all the long raw edges are enclosed). The directions don’t say to do this beforehand, and I think it really would have made that part of the sewing so much easier.

Did you use the same cotton fabric to line each mask or did you use flannel?

Did you use the same cotton fabric to line each mask or did you use flannel? I made some with flannel and some with more of the same fabric. Whatever suits you.
I bought a commercial roll of bias tape on amazon and it was much faster than creating my own bias tape. I was using some off white fabric, so the color didn't matter.

One other question. I'm planning to order more fabric. Short of going to the store and feeling each fabric, does most 100% cotton fabric work?

FYI I have been seeing posts from nurses asking for people making masks to use different colors for the inside and outside of the masks so they can tell quickly which side has been against their face so they don’t accidentally touch the potentially contaminated outer side.

Yes, however batiks or Kona is best because they’re tightly woven. That said, batiks and Kona have the same color on both sides, so if you go with those, I’d recommend a white fabric as a interior liner.

FYI I have been seeing posts from nurses asking for people making masks to use different colors for the inside and outside of the masks so they can tell quickly which side has been against their face so they don’t accidentally touch the potentially contaminated outer side. The AB Mask Pattern suggests having the “wrong” side of the fabric face out on the inside of the mask so that it is easy to tell outside and inside of the masks just by glancing at it. That works well for quilting cotton, not so well for the batik cotton.

I agree that the AB mask works well with ties. Dh and a friend have tried them out for me and his friend appreciated that it was larger and fit his face well. For elastic, I like the one from the guy in Antwerp in this video link He uses ties but I've made them with elastic. I found that I could trip 3/8 inch braided elastic in half vertically and it doesn't unravel and is about the right width to feel comfortable behind the ear. My Walmart still had 3/8 inch elastic this past weekend though it is all gone now too. Guess someone else had the same idea.

Thanks! I found the link to the instructions, but couldn’t find the pattern. I may try this with elastic, as lisae suggests.

I used those twist ties that celery stalks are held together with. It worked really well.

On the AB mask, I couldn't get that pattern to print to scale. I'll attempt to draw it out unless someone else has a handy link another pdf?

I switched to ties because I see posts about elastic hurting their ears and no nose wire

And then if your printer is also a copier, copy the printout and have it enlarge the copy to 105% and it is perfect. That is what I do. If your printer isn’t also a copier, I think the smaller version is really fairly close and will work. The full size version is really pretty large.

would those blue fabric shoe covers work as fabric for masks? These are the ones sold at Home Depot that workers use in a home they are servicing to keep carpets and floors clean. Are they breathable? You don’t want anything that is waterproof because it won’t breath.

In the first couple of comments you will see that someone made a pattern pdf at the correct scale (vs having to blow it up in your printer). Open it and print it. It works great! 😁

Does anyone know how tight the weave must be in order to keep the virus out? I have heard that these masks don't actually keep the virus out, as much as stop you from touching your face and transferring the virus, and if you are a carrier, but asymptomatic, prevent you from releasing the virus. There are so many different stories and no actual proof (studies) of the effectiveness of the masks. If you are sewing for medical personnel it is more to protect/preserve their PPE equipment. If you are sewing to protect yourself, you may want to try different sandwiches to determine your comfort level.

One of the local hospitals here was linking up a different pattern they want people to use that has a pocket for a removable HEPA filter. They are also asking for donations of HEPA vacuum cleaner bags and furnace filters, so I wonder if they are cutting them up to use as inserts in the homemade masks. I know we had some of those bags that were for a vacuum that broke but I don’t know where they are. northmemorial.com/covid-19-donations/?fbclid=IwAR39xMZHdraMx_T2eK493XysZt45fl5iP0vOM9Wm0bbRhlnxIWH6-UkUG4w#mask-donationsI might try making one like this if DD has some of the thicker round hair ties here at the house that they are using on the sides.
