Seriously shocked and horrified and I feel sick. Why would someone even do this?? I'm participating in the latest Stylecraft crochet CAL and the designer is Jane Crawfoot. So today in the CAL Facebook group there was a post that Jane would be live in a zoom meeting to talk about the CAL. I'm still up so I thought I'd join in, the meeting was on for about 15 mins and there were about 50 or so women...then suddenly it flicks onto screen sharing and it's full frontal, full on child pornography VERY graphic. It took a minute for my brain to catch up with what I was seeing and as I was trying to to close it down someone was saying to the host "stop the screen sharing, oh my God, stop it now" and then I managed to exit. There's some sick fuckers in the world, and now we all have that image in our heads and OMG that poor child I don't even know what to do right now. WTF?? It's a crochet group. I actually feel like I am going to throw up. I've only used Zoom a couple of times...I assume the host will report it - can they trace it back to an IP address?

That is awful. It is a known issue and I’ve heard about it in the news for a few weeks now. There are some ways to work around it, particularly on the end of the person who sets up the meeting. As in, they can require a password, and they can require the waiting room feature be activated. Zoom actually has a video tutorial on their site, I believe, showing what features to use to avoid this. They’re working on it. But still, traumatic indeed.

These people are above IP addresses which is why they rarely get caught - they'll have hidden their IP address unfortunately.

they can require a password They did - but it was published in the FB group and I think that has several thousand members so lots of people would have had access to it anyway. I wasn't aware that it was a known issue - I hadn't heard of it..but then I've only used Zoom for my bookclub meetings.

That is unfortunate. It is not necessarily the people in the crochet group that are responsible. I am aware with friends who have been using Zoom for things that have been publicized where there are just some sick losers who join and disrupt several ways. I have a friend who works in human services for a local municipality that was hosting a town hall on a diversity and inclusion subject and someone joined and started saying some horrible racial slurs.
As Katie said there are things a host can do with a password to help ensure only those intended to join do so.
Unfortunately even though the world it is in crisis, it doesn't lessen the crazies/sickos..

I guess if nothing else it can serve as a warning to others - know how to leave a meeting rapidly if you need to and if you are hosting one, disable screen sharing.

Oh I’m so sorry....I have a weekly zoom meeting but they are password protected and small groups so easier to control.
But how awful and scary.

OMG how horrifying. I'm sorry for those who had to see it but mostly so sad for that child and all the others being subjected to abuse.

It's been happening for a couple of weeks. People are really sick in the head if this is the way they get their kicks. It seems to be more prevelent in larger zoom gatherings where the password is shared, often publicly. LINK

That is awful. What a horrific situation.
I think you should be able to report it somewhere, even if you have no information about the person I think it would feel better to have taken some action.

There's an apology in the FB group and they have said they have contacted both Zoom and the police. The designer and host are in England - so I assume they contacted the British police and obviously I was there & probably a few people from different countries, which may make it more difficult BUT I hope there is something they can do. I don't think it was a 'live' image, I think it was a video. ETA: there's an update to their post, they were recording the meeting, so the police have asked for a copy of the recording and will work with Zoom. That's something at least...they are taking it seriously

I am so sorry. I taught my classes for the last two months on Zoom and was really afraid something like that would happen—some black profs got bombed with racist things. I can’t imagine how disturbing that was for all of you.

I hate to even think on it much less be confronted by it like that. Sexual abuse of a child is as heinous a crime as there is.

Omg. That’s horrific. I would call my police station and report it. I don’t know if that would do any good at all. But I would be compelled to tell someone in authority what had appeared on my screen. Also, I would be very tempted to call the police station in that persons area and alert them to what I had seen during her live feed. I wouldn’t be able to stop thinking about it and feel would feel guilty if I didn’t do everything in my power to make that stop.
What really worries me is that you heard “get it off the screen”.

I am so sorry, that sounds indescribably awful. Forcing someone to witness that has got to be one of the more traumatic things you can do to an adult. You might want to see a/your therapist or do some work on releasing the trauma so it doesn't sit and fester.

That's horrifying. I'm sure the host was too shocked to think clearly, but if the host starts sharing their own screen, that overrides anything that a participant is sharing.
I set up my classes with a password, so I'm very concerned that someone got into a password-protected meeting. I haven't wanted to do the waiting room, but maybe I should.
How many people were in this zoom meeting? I wonder if these sickos are targeting large groups where they can traumatize the most people?

I'm sorry I see now it was only about 50 people.
I hope they find not only the sicko who zoom-bombed, but the child who desperately needs help.

Yes, I think it took a minute to realize what we were seeing...I couldn't even think straight and work out how to exit the meeting, at first I literally put my hands over my eyes to avoid seeing any more. I think there were about 50 people in the meeting, so not a huge number
