Hi all, I believe that I have a squamous cell papilloma growth on my tongue, which looks exactly like this (not as big, about 5 mm) , link. I'd like to get it excised, as it feels like my tongue has a constant sensation of tongue burn. Anyone have any experience with getting something removed on the tongue? I contacted my pcp and she gave me a referral to the ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat) clinic or she said I could contact my dentist to get a referral to an oral surgeon. Which route to take? I love my dentist, too. Never been to an oral surgeon. TIA

Personally, I'd check out my insurance coverage for both; I bet you have more coverage for the ENT referral than the oral surgeon. (I had a referral to an oral surgeon if I wanted to follow up on TMJ issues, but the oral surgeon isn't listed as a covered provider under my dental OR medical coverage.)
Whatever you have, I hope it's not serious and easily treatable with no long term impact!

Yes, Emily- Is it harder to get medical coverage with an oral surgeon, vs going through the referral system with a pcp, that is the question? I despise dealing with insurance stuff. It makes my blood boil. This is nothing serious, just annoying. I have great medical, dental is Delta. Just wondering how hard it is for an oral surgeon to claim a medical claim vs. a dental claim.
I thought of clipping it off myself... but I decided not such a good idea!

I don't think it is yeast, because the back of my tongue seems normal. I've looked at many images of tongues on line.... holy, molly... there are some crazy images of tongues!

It makes my blood boil. This is nothing serious, just annoying. I have great medical, dental is Delta. Just wondering how hard it is for an oral surgeon to claim a medical claim vs. a dental claim. I thought of clipping it off myself... but I decided not such a good idea! Each time I have been to an Oral Surgeon, it has been a dental claim, not medical. What is common with dental insurance is there is a somewhat low annual allowable amount. For instance, mine is a total of $1750 a year. I would not expect that to come anywhere close to that though. If you have been to the dentist for a couple of cleanings and that's it, for me, it would probably cost me less out of pocket to go to the oral surgeon. I have a $50 annual deductible for stuff other than regular cleanings and I already paid that earlier in the year. My insurance would cover 90%. If I went to an ENT, I haven't met my deductible for the year so I would have to pay more out of pocket. So, I think you need to look at your insurance and figure out which one makes sense. You also might need to call an oral surgeon and see if this is something they can handle or if you need to go to an ENT.
