Yesterday I woke up and was thinking about the candy I loved as a child. When I was quite young, there was an old-fashioned country general store in walking distance from my house. We’re talking beaten up and scuffed wooden floors, stuff in barrels and penny candy in big glass jars on the counter. So I found this site link and started perusing candy by decade and putting my old faves in my shopping cart. When I was done, I had $100 worth of candy in there . Of course, it’s the last thing I need so I didn’t order but I had fun remembering the Zero candy bar I ate every afternoon at our neighborhood pool, the Jordan almonds at the movies and the Fruit Stripe gum, Pixi Stix, wax bottles, candy cigarettes (!), and Atomic Fireballs. I was shocked at how many candies that I loved originated in 1920 and earlier.

That was one of my favorite parts of summer....riding my bike to the carryout to get 10¢ candy....lemonheads, candy cigarettes, etc......then we'd go next door to the bar (yes, the bar) where they had other cheap candy (can't remember the specifics) and pretzel rods

My favorite candy from my youth was the Chocolite bar. I also loved Oompahs and some pixie stick like powder that I would get at the movie theater with my grandma that came in a plastic raspberry. I also loved the lollipop whistles and gold mine gum, and Ice Cubes. I would get the gold mine gum at the liquor store with my grandpa after church, he didn’t drink but that was the only store open on Sunday where he could buy the paper. Ice Cubes were always bought for us when he got gas.
I would pay good money to have a Chocolite bar again!

there was an old-fashioned country general store My grandmother owned one of those stores. Needless to say, holidays and summer vacations were like heaven for me. As we got older we would help her around the store. I've always said the best paid job I ever had was summers in my grandmother's store...all the free candy, ice cream and soft drinks I wanted. If my parents dared say anything, they had to deal with Granny! Of course, a tummy ache or two helped teach self-regulation. You and I had similar candy tastes it seems! Loved a Zero candy bar! Other favorites we share were the candy cigarettes, wax bottles, Pixi Sticks and Fruit Stripe gum. Coconut slices! Yum! (Although, I can still get them at Buccee's!) So many memories come back looking through that list on your link. TFS!

I grew up a city gal so the 7-11 down the street was my candy heaven. They had bars and such but at the bottom of the candy aisle were the bins of penny candy. You could pick from smarties, pixi stix, lik-a-maid, bubblegum, etc. I had a lot of favorites as a kid, but I hardly eat candy anymore and nothing tastes like it did as a kid. But I cannot wax nostalgic about candy without thinking about my dad. He loved peanut butter and his favorite were the peanut butter bars. He was always tickled when we found a few or a small bag and brought him some. www.oldtimecandy.com/products/peanut-butter-bars-1pcHe also liked Chick-o-Sticks but yuck!

There was a candy store in my neighborhood. Lemon heads, Mike and Ike, fun dip... i would ride my bike to the library and stop there on the way home. Or just ride my bike right there. I got to know the owner pretty well.

Oh such wonderful memories. Thank you so much Peano for reminding me of this wonderful site. I've never ordered for this site but I've had such fun remembering old childhood favorites and I do plan to place an order one day.
Has anyone else ordered from this site and were you happy with the products you ordered?
It's such fun to go through the site and remember your old childhood favorites. When I was 12-15 years old we lived in a very small town called Haymarket, Virginia in 1972-1975. I'm sure it's built up quite a bit since then, but back then it was a very small town. We had a mini-farm in an old farmhouse near the train tracks, and I'd walk about 1/2 a mile (it seemed at the time, who knows how far it actually was) to an old fashioned tiny grocery store. Sometimes I'd even ride my Shetland pony and tie him up outside while I went in. I'd spend part of my allowance on my favorite candy-Sweetarts were a big favorite of mine. I love sour flavors like lemon. I thought I remembered liking the Zagnut bar but after looking through the candy on this site it was actually the Zero bar that I liked. I also remember getting Clove gum and lots of other favorites-I just starting looking over this site so I'm sure I'll find more.

Well I don't know most of the candy you're talking about but Pixi Stix is the name of an Orly nail polish I use and I always wondered what it meant

A local drug store sells Ice Cubes. I buy a handful to get my fix every year.
A lot of these candies can be found at Cracker Barrel in their general store section. Not sure, but Bob Evans might have them, too.
I actually find fun-size Zero bars around Halloween at my local Walmart.

Well just so we English/Scottish/Welsh and Irish can join in I have put a link to a site that sells sweets from our youth. They usually deliver overseas but not at the moment. I used to love anything with sherbet. Also Jelly Babies and pear drops. Have always been a chocoholic at heart though. Anyone remember Cello bars from the 80s? www.aquarterof.co.uk/

I was in Denver last week and we past a Rocket Fizz. I love going in there and seeing all of the old candy. We have one in town, but never drive past it, so I forget to stop in.

I ordered some stuff for myself and some that I sent on to my sister for a milestone birthday several years ago. Do it! You won’t be sorry. I got her a box of Satellite Wafers and she was in heaven. We had a couple stores like that in my area that we could go to with our spending money to get candy. The closest was a little Rexall Drug but their selection was pretty limited. A bit further away was a Tom Thumb convenience store and they had a better selection of candy, plus we could get Mad magazines there too. The best place we had to ride our bikes to and could only go if one of our older siblings would go with us, and that was a little corner store place owned by a little old couple. They had the barrels of the BEST penny candy plus a lot of imported candy and all the newer weird stuff like Pop Rocks. One of my all time favorites can’t be gotten anymore and it makes me sad. I used to love getting a couple packs of Delfa Rolls red licorice ribbons. Seriously, the BEST. I also liked Charms sweet and sour pops, I would always pick lemon lime. I liked Boston Baked Beans or burnt peanuts too, but now a I can’t eat those around DH because the crunching sets off his misophonia big time. I liked those Neapolitan coconut things too, Chick-o-sticks and any kind of soft bubble gum that came in big hunks (although we also chewed a good amount of Bazooka and Dubble Bubble even though it was crap and the flavor went away in about ten seconds). Good times, good times!

phoenixcov, thank you for that link! When I was around nine, my mum went to work in the office of a sweetie manufacturer called Kings. They made all sorts of boiled sweets, but their bestseller, and the one they were most known for, was a hard aromatic sweet called Oddfellows. They were flavoured with clove and cinnamon and were delicious. I don’t think you can get them anymore, but I might be wrong. A Quarter Of sells my all time favourite: Soor Plooms! I could never eat too many as they would shred my tongue, but they were so good. I’m off to order some, and see what else I can find too. Maybe Cola Cubes? 😀 Oh, and Sweet Peanuts!

There was a convenience store a block from my house that had a big bin of cheap candy. A nickel each or 3 for a dime. Individually wrapped peanut butter bars, lemon sours, fireballs, Now and Laters, Jolly Ranchers, Mary Jane's, Bit o Honey, etc...

I grew up near gas station/small store with the attached town post office. The owners of the store were the postmasters too. I was surprised at all the candy I recognized from previous decades. Lemonheads were probably what I got most consistently. I also loved the penny Swedish fish. When I saved up a lot of money it was the Drumstick ice cream bars. There's a place not too far from me that still sells Charleston Chews. I love to eat them frozen.

They also have Mambo fruit chews occasionally, and the little tubes of Tootsie Rolls. Also good frozen is Turkish Taffy which I can still get locally too (I will neither confirm nor deny whether or not there may a couple of them in my freezer right now, waiting for some dire candy emergency).

Here are your Oddfellows lesleyIn the U.S. There's an organization called Odd Fellows and the Rebekah's.
" is a non-political and non-sectarian international fraternal order of Odd Fellowship. It was founded in 1819 by Thomas Wildey in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. Evolving from the Order of Odd Fellows founded in England during the 1700s, the IOOF was originally chartered by the Independent Order of Oddfellows Manchester Unity in England but has operated as an independent organization since 1842, although it maintains an inter-fraternal relationship with the English Order.[5] The order is also known as the Triple Link Fraternity, referring to the order's "Triple Links" symbol, alluding to its motto "Friendship, Love and Truth".[5]"

I loved Wacky Wafers, especially banana. My mom loved Necco Wafers. I think they still make those.
There is a store here in Pittsburgh called "Grandpa Joe's Candy Shack" (or something like that) where you can get a bunch of the old-fashioned candy and pop.

gillyp, do you know if you can still get Oddfellows? 😊 There are some bags hanging up in the shop! PM me your address and I’ll send you some when I next go down. We are shut for lockdown but I go down every week for the mail. I’ve just seen you like Soor Plooms, Cola Cubes and sweet peanuts. I have those too, I think. Would you like some?

One treat I remember liking was chocolate babies. I think they were the texture of candy corn, but a little less waxy.
I did a search for them a while back and got the impression they were discontinued because they were racially insensitive.

Mass produced tablet, that is, I won’t have the hand made tablet until we are open again as it has a short shelf life. I also have tablet ice cream which is a favourite with customers. My comment about selling online was a wry exclamation. . I’m happy to send you some though.

We have a place here that sells many old fashioned candy brands. It's fun to go with our parents.
DH loves O Henry candy bars. I find them once in a while, especially at Halloween.
