I'm going to be participating in a "debate" style meetup as a language practice thing, where we're given a topic and everyone gets 30 seconds to say something. I was asked to help think of some topics. I figure keeping it fluffy would be good. Any suggestions?

Cold pasties: Ketchup or butter, salt, pepper. Hot pasties: gravy or ketchup. If you say ketchup you are wrong. If you use ketchup, I will never make pasties for you again.

Sleeping with some kind of white noise in the background (fan or sound machine) vs sleep in dead silence.
To put the cart away, or not put the cart away. 😏
Which is better: lobster vs blue crabs.

Sort of. I’m not a real Michigander, my husband is. 🤣. I didn’t know about them until I met him and he and his family of Yoopers gave me one.

One that always gets my friends and I talking is marrying within or outside of our religion. The conversation is always related to our kids.
It’s amazes me when my one friend says she won’t attend her child’s wedding if he marries outside of our religion.
We have to keep the conversation light.
The other one that gets us talking is whether or not we’d use plastic surgery / fillers as we get older.
My dd 11 had to give a topic for debate last year to stir up a discussion and she used single sex schools versus coed schools.

Cold pasties: Ketchup or butter, salt, pepper. Hot pasties: gravy or ketchup. If you say ketchup you are wrong. If you use ketchup, I will never make pasties for you again. What is a pastie? It may be a regional term. I live in Canada. I should have made this clear. A butte pastie ( or closely related Cornish pastie), is a hand held meat pie. There is no sauce on the inside. It may be calzone shaped but it is nothing like a calzone. The crust is a special type of biscuit dough and there is no cheese. Pasties are the food of miners. The original shape was a folded teardrop. The meat and potatoes were in the fat part and the dessert was in the bottom skinny part. When you folded the dough over the mixture, you rolled a thick edge, called the handle. This thick edge was never eaten, since it got dirty from the miner’s hand. Today there is no dessert and no thick handle and the shape is now calzone shape. The one thing that stayed the same, is there is never ever ever grounded beef( hamburger) in a butte pastie... never ever. And a traditional butte pastie is always beef, potato and onion. And you never ever serve a butte pastie with ketchup. Always beef gravy. And the pastie shop on diners, drive-ins and dives , is not a good place to go to get a pastie.

No no no no no! Pasties were made to give to miners. They're handheld pies. One side had savory (meat and vegetables), and the other end had fruit for a dessert. Gravy would make it all gross! My grandma (also a Michigander) adapted the handheld pie recipe into a whole pie and our family has made it for generations. We only do the meat/veggie part. She was even published in the local newspaper with her recipe <3 There's a photo of her and my 5 year old mom making them.
