Costco wants to help stop the spread of covid. Admirable and nice of them to do their part. So they have stopped selling half-sized sheet cakes. No more. Can't find 'em. Can't get 'em. You'll have to settle for a round cake. Smaller cake = less people. They are doing their part. No more feed 50+ cake. It is gone!

Have the specifically said that's the reason why they are no longer selling them? Because I'm not sure that would stop someone from having a party. Maybe they just aren't selling right now? I'd be afraid to buy one--I'd eat the whole thing with the week we are having!

I’d think they wouldn’t be selling since people aren’t having big gatherings, so it’s more of a supply and demand issue?

So you buy two instead of one....highly doubt that's the reason considering pretty much everything else is in "party" size

They chose to stop selling that or are they realizing that people aren’t buying them now? Seems like if that were the case, then it should also translate to a lot of other things they are selling.

I did read an article over the weekend about this. They have stopped selling them to help with social distancing in the bakery area. It just coincides with large gatherings and the selling of those cakes for large gatherings. I will see if I can post a clean article.
New York (CNN Business)The past few months have been chaotic for Costco customers, with product limitations, long lines and the temporary elimination of free food samples. Now, it appears there's another change for devoted shoppers: Costco has eliminated the iconic half-sheet cakes that are the centerpiece of graduation and birthday parties.
Costco (COST) has quietly stopped selling the $20 half-sheet cakes across its US stores for the past month, instead pointing people toward its 10-inch round cakes and other assorted bake goods. "To help limit personal contact and create more space for social distancing, Costco has reduced service in some departments," the company explained to outraged customers on its Facebook account. In a statement to the New York Times, Costco said it has no plans to immediately bring back the half-sheet cakes and said the round cakes are "resonating with our members."
Costco didn't immediately return CNN Business' request for comment.
The decision also coincides with a recommendation from several US states and health agencies to avoid or prohibit large gatherings in light of Covid-19. Half-sheet cakes feeds around 50 people, while its 10-inch round cakes feeds around a dozen.
Kroger (KR) and Sam's Club stores have also appeared to stopped selling the half-sheet cake, according to an online search. However, Walmart (WMT), Albertson's and H-E-B are still selling sheet cakes of various sizes. Despite a growing number of coronavirus cases, a Costco executive previously told CNN Business it's "trying to get back to normal, as areas around the country are trying to do the same." The chain started bringing back free food samples in a handful of stores and plans to roll them out to additional locations in coming weeks. Costco is also loosening restrictions on the number of people members are allowed to bring with them during shopping trips.

I'm not really understanding the snark of the OP.
While Costco has their reasons for doing so, I'm sure one of them isn't because they think gatherings of idiots will automatically stop because there's no Costco sheet cake at the party.
My guess is the reasons they've stated are accurate, and beyond that, I also would guess they were selling way less of them these days. So why not focus their smaller staffs on something more reasonable?!
Personally, I get one about every 5 years. I just don't have occasion for them usually. That said, they are the best damn sheet cake you can buy in my opinion. Hopefully at some point they will bring them back!

Personally I don't think that is going to stop anyone from planning a party. But if they think it will help, go for it. And I would assume they are just not selling as many anyways. Now that you posted this, a slice of Costco cake sounds pretty damn good. Yummy.

Haven't had one of these in ages, or at least not what I can remember. Wouldn't their round cakes taste as good as their sheet cakes?

If they would make their round cakes with the same recipe and fillings, I'd be ALL OVER it every time we went!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the cake!

I know around Easter groceries stores were advertising Easter dinners that fed a big group, and it seemed kind of irresponsible of them. Should you be enabling people to gather in unsafe numbers?

I was actually happy when I saw this news. We are a household of 2 and so half sheets were WAY too big. We could handle a 10" round though.
However, after visiting our Costco I had to leave it on the shelf because they had the same annoying thing as other bakeries. I want a chocolate cake + white icing. They only had white cake + white icing or chocolate cake + chocolate icing. I don't know if I could order the combo I wanted, or if we had visited earlier if they had some available (but the case was pretty full).
I'm really craving a Publix cake, but I'm 2000 miles away.

I can tell you Costco cake got us through the early days of shelter in place! My friend had a party cancelled and I had ordered a white and a chocolate Costco cake. I cut each cake into five slice chunks and wrapped and froze them. My family had cake twice a week for many weeks and it brought us so much joy! I love Costco cakes.

They likely chose to eliminate the sheet cakes because the demand for them was much less, not because they think that removing the sales of sheet cakes will discourage people from holding a party.

It seems like the bakery area isn't so congested now that there are fewer choices for customers.
Before, people would be in front of that case for a few minutes making all those difficult decisions: chocolate/vanilla/carrot cake? Balloons, big flowers/little rosebuds?
Now people can look at a couple choices, grab one, and move along.

Or workplace birthdays? To help limit personal contact this does make sense-- smaller cake = less people touching one LARGE cake. (as well as in the bakery area at Costco, lol)

That's also how I interpret it. They needed to be able to spread out the people in the bakery more, so they are limited production on some items. I would think large sheet cakes would be easy to cut out since they demand is probably way down.

I just got the new Costco Connection magazine in the mail today and they were advertising the round cakes. It appears that they are the same cake and mousse filling as the sheet cakes, just in a smaller size. So everyone, go forth and buy yourselves a Costco round cake with confidence! And if it’s more than you need today, slice it up, place the slices on a sheet pan lined with parchment, freeze them until they’re firm and then wrap them up individually tightly in plastic wrap then put the wrapped slices in a ziplock freezer bag. The next time you have a hankering for a hunk of Costco cake, take one piece out of the bag, thaw it on the counter and 15-20 minutes later when you’re shoveling it into your cake hole you can thank me! I can tell you that I have personally eaten Costco cupcakes that had been frozen and wrapped up that way as much as FOURTEEN MONTHS later and they were still as good as the day I froze them. No freezer burn, no weird tastes, simply perfection.

Yes! Because people were able to order and customize the half-sheet cakes at Costco, necessitating a larger staff present to bake and customize them on a daily basis in each store - a central distribution point is impossible for individual cake orders. It makes sense to me from a worker safety point of view as to why they put their half-sheet cakes on hold.

Not having a Costco cake will NOT prevent people from gathering...Just Sayin....says the Girl who had to go to the local supermarket to order a cake....when I realized Costco would not accommodate!!! This was for a work function, in the hospital...where folks take their food and socially distance to eat....If anyone follows the rules, the OR staff does!!!

Other than this thread, I wouldn’t have noticed Costco stopped selling sheet cakes. Costco makes a damn good cake. Now I want a Costco cake—or even a Costco cupcake. Damn social/physical distancing. I have no reason to go to Costco and a cake isn’t enough of a driving force. We used to go to Costco and wander around to see if there was anything we “needed.” Now, unless there is a true need, I wouldn’t go. At this point, “wanting cake” is not a true need. Ask me in a couple of months though. Needs may change by then if we are still sheltering in place in Arizona.

And the term "cake HOLE" along with how you said "shoveling it in" added to my giggle, becauseee.....SHOVELING sweets is something that I've gotten wayyyy too good at during quarantine!!

I really don’t know anything about the cakes, but I really appreciate the fact that Costco requires all it’s customers to wear masks. (At least they do where I live). As far as I know, they are the only big chain store in my area that does require customers to wear masks.
