It seems like I remember a few people here who like classic films because the topic does come up from time to time. It's hot...SO HOT...and I'm having a lumpectomy on Friday so I'll be cooped up even more than "normal" for a while, and I was going through all my classic DVDs (yes, I'm old, but I like having hard copies) and wondering what great, maybe unsung, classics I'm missing out on seeing. By "classic," I'm thinking pre-1970. Do you have a favorite actor or actress that you love and will watch anything they've made? Do you have a favorite genre? Are there some movies you love that you never hear anyone talk about? Are there some actors, actresses or genres that you wouldn't watch if you had a gun to your head? I would really love to hear abut it all. Especially, as I said, anything a little more obscure. I love Cary Grant. I know almost everybody loves Cary Grant, but he really is my favorite. I have more of his movies in my collection than any other actor or actress. I like Bogart too, but sometimes his movies are less accessible. Usually a Cary Grant movie is like comfort food. I love the movies he did for Hitchcock, especially North by Northwest. But I also love some of the goofy comedies he did with Irene Dunne and Myrna Loy (The Awful Truth, The Bachelor and the Bobbysoxer.) I'm not sure I have one favorite actress. I like Ingrid Bergman, Jean Arthur, Myrna Loy, Grace Kelly. Notorious is my favorite Ingrid Bergman movie, and Casablanca. I love Hitchcock movies. I've been listening to a podcast called Hitchpod for a couple of years, and they're making way through all of Hitchcock's 50-odd movies. It's encouraged me to watch some of the more obscure movies I've never seen before. This weekend I watched Topaz, from 1969, a spy story set during the Cuban missile crisis. It was better than I expected from a later Hitchcock movie. I like film noir. That's probably where the most obscure movies I've watched hail from. I would recommend an imperfect but weirdly compelling movie called The Stranger with Orson Welles, Edward G. Robinson, and Loretta Young. It's free on Amazon Prime. It might not be purely stereotypical noir, but I think it fits into that genre well. Genres I don't like: Westerns! And many/most musicals. Can't stand John Wayne. Can't stand Rosalind Russell or Maureen O'Hara. I would love to hear what you like. The only other place I have to talk movies is the TCM FB group and they're all old and crabby.

I will watch anything with James Stewart in it.
If you like film noir, make sure you've seen "Kiss of Death" with Richard Widmark. OMG, he's the scariest bad guy ever!
I certainly hope you never said you hate John Wayne in the TCM FB group! LOL!

Since we've been home a lot I've been watching a lot of old movies. I love The Thin Man movies with Myrna Loy and William Powell and I will always stop and watch an Astaire/Rogers film. I do not like musicals but love them with Fred and Ginger. I enjoy the old black and white films.
I don't do John Wayne either although I do like some of the other old westerns. The only actor that I actually refuse to watch is Tom Cruise 🤮 not that his movies would be considered classic (at least not to me).

Mystie, how are you feeling? I'm thinking of you. I'll stop whatever I'm doing to watch a Marx Brothers Movie. They're truly my favorite movies. Harpo was multi talented. IRL, Arthur Marx(Harpo) was a philanthropist and so very kind. Aside from that, I loved "If it's Tuesday it Must be Belgium". Of course, anything w/Audrey Hepburn is fantastic. I saw "My Fair Lady" on stage w/Rex Harrison and it was amazing. However, I missed Audrey Hepburn.

I know it’s a little past your 1970 limit, but the screwball comedy What’s Up Doc with Ryan O' Neal (I know ), Barbra Streisand and the great Madeline Kahn never fails to make me laugh. Otherwise I’m not super well versed in classic films and my recs are common. I always liked Bette Davis—Now, Voyager and All About Eve. Gregory Peck—To Kill A Mockingbird and Gentleman’s Agreement. I always liked George Sanders as an actor.

Saying you hate John Wayne in the TCM group is almost as scary as saying you love Jane Fonda.

There were so many tremendous character actors in the studio era. I've always been meh about Barbra Streisand...I think I saw What's Up Doc years and years ago, but maybe I need to take a second look.

Jimmy Stewart is my ideal man, so I will watch everything with him. He was peak dreaminess in Rear Window, but peak charm in Harvey. I love any and all Hitchcock movies, and I know it is trite but I think Psycho is one of the best movies ever made. I too love the Thin Man movies, they never fail to make me laugh and long for Myrna Loy’s amazing outfits, I love Harold Lloyd silent films. Chaplin was good, but Lloyd was my favorite. I love suspense and horror movies as well, Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte, The Bad Seed, Freaks, Night of the Hunter, Phantom of the Opera The House on Haunted Hill are all widely known, but I love them all. Bedlam, the Innocents, Beast with 5 Fingers are also really good. Double Indemnity, Touch of Evil, Cape Fear, Rebecca, Laura are must watches.
I recently saw Petrified Forest with Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart and Leslie Howard, that was really great. I love Bette Davis, Dark Victory is one of my favorites as well.
I regularly scroll through to see what TCM is showing and we generally have a stockpile of black and white movies ready to watch on our DVR,

Another of his movies I really enjoy is My Man Godfrey. It's SO very screwball! I have a big gap in my old movie knowledge when it comes to Astaire and Rogers. Not that I have anything against them just for some reason, I've never made time to see their movies. I'll need to fix that.

Looking forward to getting past this surgery, but I don't think it will be a huge ordeal. (Fingers crossed!) I've seen a couple of Marx Brothers movies. I like the one where they all jam into a cruise ship room about the size of a closet, but I can't remember which one that is. My favorite Audrey Hepburn movie is Charade. I got to introduce my niece to that one a couple of years ago, and she liked it, too. And of course it features Cary Grant!

I'm glad someone else mentioned "What's Up,Doc?". Most people have never heard of it. I don't love Ryan O'Neal or Barbra Streisand as actors, but I love that movie. I remember watching it with my Mother as a kid (I'm in my 50's). I watch it about once a year. I have the DVD, I watched it with my Son and one of his friends when they were about 14 and they thought the chase scene was hysterical. I think I may watch it today If you like Cary Grant, have you watched "Topper"? It is a cute movie.

I like Harold Lloyd, too. He had a real charm about him,.. and what a stuntsman. I only like the more tame horror movies, but you named several I like--The Bad Seed, Phantom of the Opera, House on Haunted Hill...I like Village of the Damned, and all those old Universal monster movies. I like the old 50s sci-fi stuff too, like The Day the Earth Stood Still and War of the Worlds (the originals, of course!) Laura is one of my very favorites, and Double Indemnity. I'm going to look into some of those you mentioned that I haven't seen. Did you know Humphrey Bogart named his daughter Leslie after Leslie Howard? They had both been in the Broadway play of Petrified Forest together, and when Leslie Howard was cast in the film, he insisted that Bogart be brought on, too, even though he was not well known. It was a huge break for Bogart and he never forgot it. If you like Bette Davis, have you seen The Letter? Herbert Marshall's in it, too. I watched it last fall (I think it was free on Prime, but probably not any more) and I was really impressed.

We have a Mr Blandings Dream House a few miles from where I live. They built them as a publicity vehicle when the movie came out and they were given away in a lottery. Someone bought it and flipped it and now it’s your typical gray walls, white trim, decorative tile monstrosity. And they’re asking $250K over the neighborhood home prices.

I love classics. My library lets you stream three movies a month on Kanopy and they have some good offerings. Film noir is one of my favorite genres, I'm not much into the westerns and war movies. I do love a musical. I adore Hitchcock. I can watch a Tracy/Hepburn movie any time. I got my kids to get into watching old movies through Arsenic and Old Lace and Danny Kaye movies. When I was little I fell in love with Olivia De Havilland. I have an affinity for a lot of old time actors and actresses. If you like podcasts, You Must Remember This is great for in depth dives into classic film.

Father Goose...Love Cary Grant. Was he the lead in House Boat? Adored that one, too.
What about Doris Day? Her movies tend to be feel good. Mom loved her. So, I have seen so many of her movies. Only one that I remember by name is Don’t Eat the Daisies.
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? This Property is Condemned. Natalie Wood, Charles Bronson are in this one.

Some of my favorite movies from *back in the day* are Backstreet starring John Saxon and Susan Hayward. I cried like a baby when I first saw it, don't know if it would be the same now. Another is Snake Pit with Oliva de Havilland. The movie terrified me. I loved war movies ~ especially submarine movies, maybe because I'm a navy brat. Run Silent, Run Deep with Clark Gable was my favorite. The Fighting Sullivans, now called The Sullivans, was one that made me bawl when I was a kid. It's a true story and why the Navy will no longer let brothers serve on the same ship. I saw Rear Window when I was 5! Made quite the impression on me! There is another one that popped into my head when I saw your post but now it's popped back out. ETA: ETA: I forgot Shadow of a Doubt. That's the one that popped into my head!! Loved that movie.

A Place in the Sun is a favorite of mine. When Angela says “Tell mama...” to George after he says he wants to tell her all about how much he loves her—swoon... 💕
Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift are perfection.

I like silent films.. harold lloyd, chaplin.. and laurel and hardy.. my dad would bring them home from the library in the 1960's.. we had a film projector and would watch them.. marx brothers never disappoint.. A night at the opera I believe is the scene with people stuffed in ship cabin. I like 1930's and 40's.. only dislike horror films. the thin man are favs here.. my 30 yr old daughter has the whole collection on dvd.. one of the few SF movies that have fog. we also like whats up doc, even 48 hours has crazy sf chase scenes.
I like obscure ones too.. but San Francisco with clark gable.. there is a line "there's food and water at Sacramento and Octavia"--my husband had an apartment at that corner for 6 yrs... it was across the street from a large park.

Rosalind Russell!!!! Get Auntie Mame and watch it repeatedly. It is my very favorite “old” movie. 😁 His Girl Friday, and The Women are also good.
Meet Me in Saint Louis. I can watch that movie all day every day.
Gaslight and Diabolique are nice and creepy. Gaslight won’t scare the pants off of you, but it has a creepy mood. ESP if you watch it on a dreary rainy/sleety day. Diabolique has subtitles, so you might not like that if you’re in pain meds. But, if you like being scared, this is a pretty good one. 😁

I have not seen the Letter, I will look for that one. I love the classics Horror films as well, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is another great one that had such cool special effects. I love the old Alfred Hitchcock tv series as well. I forgot to say that as much as I love Rear Window and Harvey my favorite JS flick is Shop Around the Corner, I am sure you have seen it, but anyone else who hasn’t definitely needs to look it up. It is what You’ve Got Mail was based on and it is hilarious and charming. Our local theater was showing a bunch of Precode films before the shut down, they were so great. I can’t wait for it to be safe to go there again. I miss seeing the classics on the big screen. We would definitely enjoy watching movies together, you have great taste in men! Forgot to add how much I love Robert Mitchum in Holiday Affair, he was normally so good at creepy roles, but was so charming in that movie. He is another actor I really enjoy.

My favorite classic film is "All About Eve."
Bette Davis, Celeste Holm, and a very young Marilyn Monroe in a small role. Outstanding.
Also, "Rebecca" is a must watch!
