Rosalind Russell!!!! Get Auntie Mame and watch it repeatedly. It is my very favorite “old” movie. 😁 His Girl Friday, and The Women are also good. Meet Me in Saint Louis. I can watch that movie all day every day. Gaslight and Diabolique are nice and creepy. Gaslight won’t scare the pants off of you, but it has a creepy mood. ESP if you watch it on a dreary rainy/sleety day. Diabolique has subtitles, so you might not like that if you’re in pain meds. But, if you like being scared, this is a pretty good one. 😁 Auntie Mame is my all time favorite!!! I’m forever saying someone is “top drawer, really top drawer”.

Is it just me or does anyone else watch an old movie and then google the stars to see what their life's story is? I do this with current movies, too- but especially stars from older movies. I think it's because the old Hollywood studio system created such stories about their actors for the sake of good publicity that I’m drawn to see what they were really like.

I have the IMDB app in the first page of my iPhone so that I can search actors immediately when I am watching an old movie. 🤣

My two faves are "Bringing Up Baby" and "Roman Holiday." You can't beat the humor in "Baby," and "Holiday" is just beautiful and classic. I also love "West Side Story," if musicals are even remotely on the table. Sending prayers that all goes well with your procedure and that you can enjoy stepping back in time through cinema during your recovery.

I love Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Greer Carson, Walter Pigeon, Cary Grant and James Stewart. I’ll pretty much watch anything with them in it.
My husband watches a lot of the classic horror movies, and I’ve really come to like a quite a few of them, too.
The ones that rely less on gore and shock, and more on atmosphere and story telling.

My favorite Hitchcock movie Dead Ringer, is that the one where she kills her sister and takes over her life? I saw that recently and it was good. Dial M for Murder...I just watched that the other night for the millionth time. I just love that movie. Ray Milland's best role, I think.

I love An Affair To Remember with Cary Grant and Deborah Carr. Speaking of Deborah Carr, I like the movie with her and You Brenner, The King and I, and the movie with her and Robert Mitchum (don't remember the name but she's a nun and he's in the military, might be during the war etc...). I LOVE Cat On A Hot Tin Roof with Elizabeth Taylor. Also like Giant with her, Rock Hudson and James Dean. Anne of the Thousand Days, with Richard Burton and Genevieve Bujold. (A telling of the King Henry viii and Anne Boleyn story. Another favorite). If you're ever interested in older tv shows, MacMillian and Wife with Rock Hudson and Susan St James is great. Ellery Queen, with Jim Hutton, is just pure fun. Best wishes on your surgery, and wishing you a super fast and smooth recovery. I do like those old 70s mystery shows, I was just thinking about tracking down Ellery Queen the other day. I like Columbo and Rockford Files, too, I can remember my parents watching those. Thanks for the good wishes. :-)

I love To Have and Have Not. Bogie and Bacall are the best.
“If you want me, just whistle. You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and blow." So awesome.

Another great, really dark movie that I don't think anyone has mentioned is A Face in the Crowd. Andy Griffith plays a radio personality who rises to fame and has a cult like following. He has the ability to make or break a politician's career. (The more things change, the more they stay the same). He's very charming on air, but a very mean guy off air. Walter Matthau and Patricia Neal co-star in the film.
My son and I recently watched Reefer Madness, which I had heard about for years, but had never seen. It was truly laugh out loud funny. It was made in 1936 to warn parents and teens about the dangers of marijuana, but to a modern audience, it's like a really long Saturday Night Live skit.

So somewhat off topic but still on trend with the discussion about sexism, I was looking through Netflix and decided 365 Days might be just the escapist trash I was looking for. The premise seems iffy (mafia boss keeps woman prisoner for a year until she falls in love with him? I think based on some trash novel I've seen discussed here?) but I decided to give it a go.
Holy shit that was DISGUSTING. I only made it through probably not even twenty minutes to see the male lead pretty much force himself onto the flight attendant, grabbing her head, cutting back and forth from the blow job scene to the female lead having to use a vibrator since her boyfriend didn't immediately give in to her demands for sex the minute she got home from work.
After this flight attendant gets her face assaulted she walks off with a little coy smile on her lips, as if it's all in a day's work for her and what a lucky woman she was!
I wanted to puke. I didn't make it any further than that.
Off to find something a bit less rapey.

I also love "West Side Story," Saw this 2 nights in a row when it first came out ~ I was 13 or 14. Cried like a baby both nights. Bought my dad the album for Father's Day that year. Just what he wanted. Still have the album and listen to it occasionally. Know the lyrics by heart.

I love this thread. I love old classic movies - I used to watch "old" movies (from the late 30's - 40's and 50's with my mom on Sunday afternoons. She'd talk about the various stars and all the gossip/history/info about them and the movies. I treasure those memories and still love most of those movies. The Quiet Man is my all time fav. I love Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House. I Remember Mama, Life With Father, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, so many more.
This has been great to read through!!

I'm a big fan of an old show called Mystery Science Theater 3000 (hence my username) and a few of the guys from that show formed a streaming show called Rifftrax. They "riff" on old ridiculous movies. I think their live show riff of Reefer Madness is available on Amazon Prime...I highly recommend it! They are funny guys.

I have not seen him mentioned. Maybe his movies aren’t old enough yet.
Sidney Poitier...Such an incredible actor.
Honestly, I am afraid to go back and watch for fear of ruining those fond memories.
Someone mentioned Cheaper by the Dozen. There was one with Lucille Ball. She had a bunch of kids and then married a man with a bunch of kids. Was that Henry Fonda? Was that one Cheaper by the Dozen? Or, was that the black and white movie with the children from the same parents? The Dad was a bit efficient.
There was also one with Brian Keith (Family Affair). Maybe With 6 You Get Eggroll. Can’t remember who played his leading lady.

When you’re a Jet, You’re a Jet all the way ... At the beginning of the movie when the shot is moving over the New York skyline and then all of a sudden goes down to the Jets and then the opening dance/singing sequence ~ just WOW!! I'm sure most kids now would think it incredibly corny.

I’m partial to the version with Lucille Ball.

I rarely get to see old movies from the very beginning as I usually find them while channel surfing and then stop and watch. Last night I caught Bringing Up Baby with Hepburn and Grant, from the very beginning. Such a fun movie. I love Katherine Hepburn. My all time favorite is Enchanted Cottage. When it comes on my husband always says, that's just like us! He calls our house the enchanted cottage.
