Last week I finished Daughters of Erietown by Connie Schulz. It was set in small town Ohio during the time that my parents lived there. It reminded me of their stories of rural living and growing up in a small town.
Now I'm reading Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell. It's centered around William Shakespeare's son, Hamnet, who died as a young boy. Shakespeare went on to write Hamlet, and the theory is that it was inspired by his son. It's a little slow going, but I love Maggie O'Farrell, and I'll stick it out to the end.
Happy Reading!

I read The Art of Inheritiing Secretsby Barbara O'Neal last week. It was good 4/5 stars. I also read Becoming Us by Beth McCord and Jeff McCord. It's a book about marriage (first half of the book) and the enneagram (second half of the book). It was also very good-especially the enneagram details. 4/5 stars. I am currently reading The Dutch House by Ann Patchett which has been read by many already. It's very good so far.

Nice leisurely reading of The Fiery Cross by Diana Gabaldon.
Can’t take the chance of getting caught up in a new book. I can ‘just one more chapter” a good book until 4 am, because I have zero self-control. So, having read Fiery Cross multiple times, I am forcing responsibility with lack of temptation.

Caught up with the first two in the Crazy Rich Asians series by Kevin Kwan, funny and snarky, a perfect mindless summer read. Going to look for the third book at my library this week.

I finished Mr Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore. Not my usual genre but it was good and I kept wanting to get back to it which was good because we had no power for three days.
Next I picked up Since We Fell by Dennis Lehane. I got both books from a buy nothing group along with The Girl on the Train which I had already read so I tucked it into a little free library.

I finished The One and Only Bob. Swoon. Bob is back with an amazing cast, including Ruby and Ivan and others. Bob is feisty and stinky and has the biggest heart ever. All the love for this one. 5/5 stars or maybe a bit more.
I'm reading The Last Blue by Isla Morley right now. She's such a strong writer.

One to Watch by Kate Stayman-London. A plus-sized blogger is chosen to be the star of a Bachelorette-style reality show. A light and easy-breezy romance.

I’m almost done MY DARK VANESSA by Kate Russell. It’s a 5/5 for me so far so i hope the ending doesn’t disappoint. It’s about a teenager who has an affair with her high school English teacher. Then 20 years later, she is asked to support another girl who is accusing him during the me too movement. His ability to manipulate her is amazing. Her commitment to him is amazing. I’m so drawn in.

This was so, so hard to read. Like covering your face and peeking through your fingers at a bad accident. Gah. But such a powerful book for sure. I thought part of it was a cop out. He kills himself? Really? ? That did not seem realistic to me at all. And so, so unfair to Vanessa. I think I gave this 5 stars. It would be great for book club, but it could be very triggering. Lisa

Oh just put it away - there are far too many good books waiting to be read and absolutely no need to read books that are not doing it for you.

Yesterday I finished Camino Winds, the sequel to John Grisham’s Camino Island. It was an easy read but I found parts of it to drag but it got better in the last 1/4 of the book. And honestly, I didn't love any of the characters. Not his best work. 3.5/5
Now I have a dilemma I have so many good books to choose from! I started The Guest List by Lucy Foley last night so we'll see.

Finished... I'd Give Anything by Marisa de los Santos - I liked it, but wouldn't give it 5 stars - maybe 4? It told some backstory through the journal entries of the main character - so it sort of did the flashback thing. The development of the relationships between the characters was well done and the writing style was engaging. Started... Britt-Marie Was Here by Fredrik Backman - I've read and enjoyed a number of his other books, so I grabbed this one when it was available on Overdrive .

I didn't get to post last week due to the tropical storm and power outages. Some of my poor neighbors are still out, day 7. THE LIES THAT BIND (2020) BY EMILY GRIFFIN : 5 STARSDescription: A hook-up in a bar before 9/11 leads the woman to search for him and finds someone else is searching for him too. Review: Rhondito gave it 4.5 stars but edie3 "wasn't that impressed" and she was not sure if she liked someone profiting off 9/11. Author's first book forme was All We Ever Wanted and I rounded-up to 4 stars. Ms. Griffin's books really flow for me. What a drama this one is! I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. A great story with highs, lows and finding the truth. THE WICKED SISTER (2020) BY KAREN DIONNE : 5 STARSDescription: You have been cut-off from society for 15 years, shut away in a mental hospital in self-imposed exile as punishment for the terrible thing you did when you were a child. What if you didn't accidentally shoot and kill your mother, then whoever did it is still out there waiting for you. Review: Ms. Dionne's first book, The Marsh King's Daughter, received 5 stars from me; it was recommended to me by @ilunpink who said it was her best book of 2018. I would never have looked at this author if it wasn't for her recommendation. What a journey THIS book is! Love the facts about the woods and animals therein. Ms. Dionne's stories envelop you like a warm blanket in winter. The suspense never lets up. All her characters are soooo developed you become them. Great book! I'm glad all Ms. Dionne's travels finally brought you to writing. I even got a kick out of the "Acknowlegements" at the end!!! PLAYING NICE BY JP DELANEY : 4 STARSDescription: Pete Riley answers the door one morning and lets in a parent's worst nightmare. On his doorstep is Miles Lambert, a stranger who breaks the devastating news that Pete's son Theo isn't actually his son. He is the Lambert's; switched at birth by an understaffed hospital, while their real son was sent home with Miles and his wife Lucy. Review: Prior books by this author were The Girl Before (4 Stars), The Perfect Wife (5 Stars) and Believe Me (2 Stars). Believe me was a reworked book from 17 years ago that doesn't even come-up on the author's profile; I try not to count this one against him. Mr. Delaney doesn't disappoint with this book, Playing Nice. Love the intriguing dialogue which keeps the tension up. Totally held my attention worrying what would go wrong next. Well done ! THE VACATION BY TM LOGAN : 4 STARSDescription: Four best friends on a dream vacation come face-to-face with an explosive secret. Review: The first book by this author for me was Lies which was a 4-star read. Liked the slow introduction of all the characters, which helped a lot to keep them straight. Nothing is as it seems on this vacation. Different actions and text messages can mean different things. The last 20-30% of the book definitely bumped it from 3 stars to 4 stars. MALORIE (BIRD BOX BK 2) BY JOSH MALERMAN : 3 STARSDescription: 12 Years after Malorie and her children rowed-up the river to safety, a blindfold is still the only thing that stands between sanity and madness. News arrives that someone very dear to her, someone believed to be dead, may be alive. Malorie's saga of a life continues..... Review: First book, Bird Box, was a 5-star read for me and I loved the movie too! This book was delayed many times over the past year so I was glad to finally get a chance to read. I really wanted to love this book, but I didn't. I think I was bored with all the "blindfold" yapping and lack of conversation between the characters. I think I'd like the movie better in this instance. I was kind with the 3 stars. Happy Reading and stay cool !

I'm reading Big Summer for my book and Happy and You Know It on my kindle. Big Summer is just okay, haven't read too much. I like the other book.
I read You Are Not Alone last week and it was okay. Not my favorite of their books, couldn't wait to finish it and read another book.

I read Friends and Strangers by J. courtney Sullivan. This is the third book I've read this year that is about a mother and her babysitter (the other two being Happy and You Know It and Such a Fun Age). All the stories diverge from this plot point, but it's seems to be a theme of books I've been reading. I liked this one the best. It's a character driven novel which I tend to enjoy.Basically you have two women, the older is able to look at the younger one and see the mistakes she's making and the younger can look at the older and judge that she has made some bad choices getting to where she is in her life. It's an interesting dynamic. Probably a bit on the slow side, but ultimately it gave me a lot to ponder when I finished. I'm reading a book about a pandemic and all I have to say is you people who are reading this genre are crazy -it's giving me nightmares.

So I read about 50 pages of The Guest List and just didn't like the characters at all. With other good books to choose from, I switched to The Wife and the Widow which was recommended as a 5 star by mnmloveli. I read a few chapters before going to bed and didn't want to put it down! I actually considered getting out of bed and reading some more. Unfortunately we've been having to get up super early to walk before it gets hot so I went to sleep instead. I love books that grab me by the throat from the first page!!

I just finished Rules of Civility by Amor Towles. This was his first book. I read The Gentleman In Moscow by him last year, and it was hands down the best book of 2019 for me, and one of my all time favorites. (Loved, Loved, Loved!!) I really liked Rules of Civility. It won't be the best of the year, but I liked it a lot.

I read Wave by Sonali Deraniyagala.
The author lost her parents, her husband, and her two boys in a tsunami in Sri Lanka. The book was heartbreaking, but beautifully written.
