So, we need some furniture for ds2 this week, including a computer desk.
I volunteered to be the one to go to IKEA today to get the desk and a t.v. stand.
The line to get in was at least 150 people long. It included roped off lines with switchbacks like you wait in at Disney. It moved somewhat more quickly, but still 30 minutes to get into the store.
I was able to find a t.v. stand easily.
Now, the tricky part came when looking for a computer desk. Our IKEA had NO DESKS available. NONE. From the $49 to the $400 versions. All of the desks had tags that said “temporarily unavailable.” Not a single desk in stock. I was able to find one desk top that was 47” in the warehouse, and then a pair of sawhorse-esque legs. And he’ll have to live with it. It was freaky to go to the desk aisle in the warehouse and have it be almost completely empty. The only boxes were for things like hutches for desks that were sold out, or table tops over 5’ long.
I cannot believe that I didn’t think what the impact would be of all the school districts in Northern VA remaining virtual this Fall. Apparently, everyone has decided to buy new desks for all the kids and all the adults working from home.
And the cafe was closed, so there wasn’t even a fatty meal of Swedish Meatballs to make me feel better about it.
My advice is that unless you are desperate and you know what you want is in stock in your IKEA, just stay home. I’m not going back until a vaccine is available and people aren’t redoing their homes. It was a 3-hour nightmare.

It's interesting how all of this has affected different things.

Well, I guess I’m not surprised. They are normally very busy on Saturdays plus throw in social distancing and that makes for a big-ass line. Also with virtual schooling, everybody needs a desk and other office furniture. I always send my husband and give him the location of what I want. It’s easy to get that info on their web site.

At the IKEA Burbank, they let people know that the desks are out of stock while still in line. I thought that was courteous.
We had the ultimate IKEA cosmic joke placed on us a couple weeks ago. Put together an entire Malsjo buffet, only to find the last item, a drawer knob, is defective. I have tried everything humanly possible to reach IKEA, my only option at this point is to go and stand in the return line. For a knob.

I stood in line at IKEA once for a return, pre -pandemic, on a Wednesday around 1. The number I pulled was 30 numbers away, so I went and shopped and even had a snack before they got to my number. I would be going to Lowe’s and getting replacement knobs. No way would I stand in line to return something now! I went a few weeks ago, super short line to get in, 45 minute line to check out. I knew exactly what I wanted and pulled it directly off the shelf without even going through the displays. I expected it to be bad, but the short line outside gave me a false sense of security. I won’t go again without checking how many of the item I want are in stock and will be there before opening. I am glad you found something that worked!

I had picked out what I wanted online last night, but there was no clue that it all was out of stock, because I could add it all to my cart. Dh suggested I do curbside pick-up, which I should have because then I would have been informed that it wasn’t actually available in the two local IKEAs, but I wanted to see it all in-person before purchasing. Many lessons learned!

IKEA can be like the seventh level of hell, even worse than Costco on a Saturday. At least at Costco they let you use a cart...that rolls in a straight line. Don’t get me wrong, I really like a lot of the things I’ve bought there. But Lord love a duck, that store is a nightmare and a half to shop.
I tend to want the things like the smaller flat pack wooden drawer things and organizers that you assemble yourself that they have in the regular store part, not in the warehouse part, so if you want it you’re dragging it all over the store in a stupid yellow bag. Or kitchen items, small lamps, storage bins. Stuff that it would be awesome to buy if you had a freaking CART. And if you do manage to get a cart, the store is two levels and finding an elevator vs. and escalator = not easy because there is like ONE bank of them in the whole store. And what is up with their idiotic carts that don’t roll in a straight line? I don’t understand that at all. And that’s on a good day, not in the middle of a pandemic.

Many lessons learned! What a mess! I guess I'll stay away from IKEA for awhile. On their website, when you are looking at an item, under the "add to cart" button is a line that will tell you if the item is in stock at your pre-selected store. And then you can even go into that list to see if the item is available at any other store.

I ordered from Ikea on their website in June and it was a nightmare. Items didn't come and it was ridiculous trying to get them by phone or email. They limited the phones to where you couldn't get through without a busy signal or just hang up and the email was only available to cancel an order. I even tried their social media. I ended up disputing the charge on my credit card.

The only number I could find was the customer service number. It’s impossible to get through. They won’t let you wait on hold, they just hang up your call. I tried Twitter and Instagram as well. I’m glad it was just a knob and not anything substantial, but really, it’s ridiculous.

And they aren’t even doing the yellow bags any more. If you want a bag, you have to commit to buying a blue one and drag that through the store. They also have some cool rainbow bags, but those are $2.99, as opposed to $0.99 for the blue ones. My other annoying story is that they had a display of their cool pegboards on the top floor. Where you could see the peg boards (Skadis) and buy accessories - the shelves and cups, etc., that go with it. I decided to wait until I was on the first floor to see if I could actually buy a pegboard, because, in my mind, they would also have accessories down there with the pegboards. I get to the first floor and was able to buy the last medium sized pegboard in white - they had plenty of the small ones. BUT, are they selling any of the accessories down on the first floor? That would be a HUGE no! I picked up the pegboard and decided I’d order the accessories online and pay for shipping, because I sure as hell wasn’t going through half the store, back upstairs and through half the store to get them, and then back again. I was able to put all the accessories in my cart online, but when trying to check out, they said that they couldn’t actually ship them. I’ve decided to just hold onto the pegboard until next year when hopefully IKEA will be sane again and I can buy the hooks and cups that attach to it. I normally love IKEA. Today just wasn’t my day.

Aaaargh that sounds like a nightmare! My kids still laugh about our last visit to Ikea about 10 years ago. We got lost inside the store and couldn't find our way out, then we lost the parking ticket so we couldn't get out of the carpark. I swore I'd never go back, and so far I've kept my word. I was able to find one desk top that was 47” in the warehouse, and then a pair of sawhorse-esque legs. And he’ll have to live with it. Or, he could do what my son does, and sit in bed all day to do school work.

I’m so sorry you missed the IKEA thread from a couple of weeks ago....
Everything you described is exactly how the Seattle IKEA experience is right now...
DD and I went over the summer for a desk. Yep, they were out of the one she wanted but I learned you can download the app and check the stock every day to see when an item comes into the store. I checked every morning and a few days later 9 desks were at our local store. We were probably the 15 and 16th customers to enter the store as we arrived about 30 minutes before store opening on a Monday. We bypassed the show rooms and headed straight to the warehouse.. I’m not kidding but we get to the location of the desks that DD wanted and their are 2 IKEA employees there pulling desks for orders that were placed online. We got DD her desk but I can’t image how it would have gone if we were 5 minutes later.

Where's the other one? I guess I could google, but I also just wanted to reply to say omg how awful that whole experience sounds. I haven't been there in ages, several years actually. We went there several times during the summer when dd had her knee surgery because they got full points for being accommodating to handicaps...good parking, wheelchairs, all-round helpfulness. But I'll be sure to avoid the whole scene until after the pandemic is over.

We tried to go first thing on a Sunday a few weeks ago in our St. Louis store. I saw the line to get in (about 20 mins before opening) and told DH to just keep on driving. But DH went back the next day on Monday around 1:00. He was walking back into the house so fast I though5 he forgot something. We needed just a twin mattress for a guest bed for my niece. He said he went right in, found the mattress in the warehouse and walked right out. The biggest wait was just a few minutes for an elevator because the trolly he used was too big for the escalator.

Not a problem for me, because I hate going to IKEA. I hate Costco, as well. I think that makes me an outcast. Have you looked on Amazon for the desk and chair? That might be your best bet right now. Also, I believe they sell a limited amount of IKEA stuff.

I decided in July I wanted a Kallax unit for my sewing room. It's about a 25 mile hike out to the nearest store. The website said it was in stock but when DD and I got there, nope. None. Still spent some $$ and DD found a different unit similar to the Kallax but smaller and lighter for her dorm room.
So I have been checking the website every few days to see when it would be back in stock. At first it said mid-August, then it changed to the first of September, then it no longer had an actual date when it was expected back in stock.
I signed up for the notification thing where they will text or email you when it comes back in stock.
This past Tuesday I checked the website and lo and behold it was in stock and I bought it immediately and selected store pickup. Never did get notified it was in stock.
I chose the store pickup option to get it Wednesday between 11 and 1. I wanted to go out mid morning but it says not to go until you get the email confirmation that your order is ready. Did not come through until 1230.
But I went out there and the store wasn't crowded at all (except for that lady with her two teen daughters who had to cut through o e of the displays to get ahead of me than then stopped in the middle of the asile to look at something effectively blocking the entire walkway. Almost coughed on her.
Managed to spend even more $$ while there, although annoyed they were out of stock of the fabric boxes.
When I was done shopping I pulled into one of the pickup slots and sent the text and about 5 minutes later they brought my furniture out and loaded it for me.
I think most stores are packed on the weekends and I avoid most stores if at all possible. My advice would be to check other stores and check the website often, don't rely on them communicating when something is back in stock. If you know exactly which item you want order online and pick up curbside. Good luck with Ikea, I understand the frustration of out of stock and the waiting game.

Our population of 600k isn’t large enough to warrant an IKEA in our area. We have to drive 5 hours to Seattle to shop there and shipping costs more than most of the items, so we don’t order online either. After reading your post I’m content not having one. Lol
Sorry it was such a bummer!

I needed a table with legs and it took me over a week of checking at midnight when they updated inventory to find it in stock and be able to pick it up the next day. I am thankful for a Reddit thread that told me the times to check and things to do to get one locally. I highly recommend buying online & pick up in store (if you can get the item). I walked in - they pulled it up in the computer and I brought it to me - no wait) 🙌🏻

I've done Ikea twice during the pandemic. The first was online, right after stay-at-home started, and I ordered some organizational stuff to be my first project. Took a couple weeks for things to ship. Then I decided I wanted some Kallax shelving and I couldn't get a delivery time. So the weekend after our restrictions started lifting and stores were reopening in May, I told DH that I wanted to go. DH was not excited about it, but I made my list so we could get in and out quickly. We waited outside about 20 minutes, did our shopping and then another 20 minutes or so for checkout. But even then, the shelves were starting to empty out and without knowing what supply chains were going to do I'm glad we went right away.

And of course we can’t get there for opening. UGH

I just ordered online and paid delivery fee. Took a month to arrive but well worth not having to go there. I did this all in the summer when I knew our school would be at lease hybrid.

I ordered DD #1 a new dresser back in May. IKEA is about 15 min from me but I wasn't in the mood for that nightmare. I'm not in the mood for it on a good, non-Covid day. I spent $49 for the next day delivery and it was WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!!

Given where I live, it is actually about 45-50 minutes to either Potomac Mills (where I was today) or College Park. The Potomac Mills IKEA is nicer, so I prefer it, usually. Yeah, just stay away for now. I just got done building the t.v. stand; it is the first time in oodles of IKEA builds over the year that there was an error in the directions. The had me put those weird posts for locking discs in the wrong holes in two places. I then had to fight to get them out without stripping them. IKEA isn’t on my happy list right now.

I used to live 20 min from an IKEA and had a definite routine. Enter through the exit, go check out the markdown area, go through the warehouse using the back aisle right up against the furthest wall (no traffic), grab an actual cart, and pretty much shop backwards through the store. Then, the elevator is in the right place to go upstairs on the off chance I need anything or need to get food supplies. I am guessing one entrance means I would have to skip using the exit as an entrance, but unless they route you directly up the escalator, I'd still head over to the returns area first and see if I could follow my typical route. Disclaimer: I know I am shopping against traffic so I stay off the main aisles and stay away from the traffic flow so I am not impeding others. I also used to go Saturdays at 7pm when it was pretty dead. Now that I live a hour from IKEA, I just never go.
