So, I’m starting to plan my Thanksgiving shopping for the month - I try to do it a little at a time.
I usually buy my turkey(s) 🦃 the first or second week of November. My local grocery store doesn’t even have any yet - just breasts.
Which, coupled with the story I heard that they are going to be selling smaller turkeys due to smaller gatherings during the pandemic, got me thinking and wondering whether we would see the typical sales on turkeys. Butterball turkeys are usually $0.99 per pound and the store brands are $0.49 - $0.69 per pound around here. In fact, a number of years I earned a free turkey by spending $100 in other groceries.
I won’t be surprised if turkeys don’t go on sale and I pay more for a 14 pound frozen turkey than I’ve paid for any turkey in my life (including when I ordered a fresh turkey when I lived in Oregon 20+ years ago). There is no reason for them to put turkeys on sale, because it isn’t as though many people will decide to eat out on Thanksgiving. We are all captive audiences this year, because contrary to Trump’s claims, COVID will still be decimating our population at the end of the month.
What do you think? Have you seen any turkeys yet? How is the pricing?

I haven't looked for turkeys yet but do think there might be a run on smaller birds because of smaller gatherings.
We haven't bought a turkey bigger than 14 lbs in twenty or so years because once we started deep frying we never went back to roasting. Some years we deep fry 2 or 3 small birds.
We haven't decided the menu yet. DH and the kids like to have lamb if it is just us and I pick up a turkey breast because I need turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce on the table even if it's just for me.

I have a list on our grocery app for things I have been buying in advance of Thanksgiving. Every week for a month or so I have purchased a few things from the list. DH did the grocery order this week and “helped” by buying our turkey, even though there wasn’t much selection and I was waiting until Butterball was in stock. So we paid $1.52/lb for our store brand turkey. Yay.

This will be my first year cooking Thanksgiving dinner since 2007. I am hoping to find a 10 pound turkey, but wonder how difficult that will be doing via instacart? What do you all think my chances are?
Over the last month I have purchased all the shelf stable items I need for the meal, as well as for all holiday baking...including dried herbs and spices. I even froze fresh cranberries “just in case.” So unless I’ve forgotten something all I need for the meal are the turkey, and fresh produce 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

Aldi's had them for 1.19/lb this week I think it was. I need to eat down the freezer a bit before I buy one though. We always get a bigger one because we like leftovers

Instacart usually gives you a size range to select, so you should get something in that range. It may be a little bigger, however. I usually make 6-7 pound chickens in my rotisserie, so not much smaller than a 10 pound turkey. But, I have boys in the house. You can always vacuum seal and freeze some of the leftovers to use in soups in the future.

Our store breaks them up by size online and IIRC they were listed as under 10, 10-14, and larger. I did the same as you. I still have to figure out the correct size of disposable aluminum pans for a couple of dishes I am sending home with my mom, but other than that we have everything that can be purchased ahead of time ready and waiting. Frozen cranberries jic is a good idea. DH likes them so it won’t be an issue if we are also able to get fresh. BFF says we can freeze rolls, but I’m concerned about the texture once we thaw them. Our favorite store rolls are King’s Hawaiian Rolls and I’m concerned they will be sold out. Have y’all ever frozen fresh rolls from the deli? I’ve mentioned before but I will say again in this thread, I had issue getting canned pumpkin for a few weeks so if you can buy now I’d consider it.

I don’t think they will be on sale. At least not as big of a sale as other years. My grocery stores, King Kullen, Stop & Shop & Shoprite always have a coupon in their circulars for $5 off $50 or $10 off $75 or $100. During the entire Coronavirus (since March), no coupons. That makes me think turkey prices will stay high and no sales.

elaine , thanks for the link! The ones I have already purchased don’t have flat lids, these are perfect for travel and look to be a more manageable size. Perfect! eta: Mom would be fine coming to our house, but I’m not so we are doing a picnic at the local park at separate tables and serving from the back of our vehicle. I’m also making an extra entire meal to send back with her and my brother because she doesn’t cook much. Worse case scenario and the weather is just too cold (not likely) or rainy for over a week then I will meet her half way and at least they will have a traditional Thanksgiving meal.

We aren't doing turkey this year. We're doing spiral ham from Costco, which was picked up today (and lots of people were doing the same apparently).
I agree, I think the prices will be high per lb, and they will be hard to come by, and not on sale.

Yikes, I hadn't thought about this. We give 10-12 pound turkeys to each of our employees and had to place the order in May (the Christmas hams were in July). Think I should probably give them a call to see if there is going to be an increase since it is 70 turkeys total.

The prices I’ve seen so far have seemed higher. I heard an NPR story about the troubles turkey farmers/sellers were going to have this year because their orders had to go in a year ago. With many restaurants and hotels being closed, or with fewer people going out, and smaller family gatherings, there will be an over abundance of the hospitality size Tom turkeys. And with more people cooking at home for smaller groups there will be a shortage of smaller turkeys. So it sounds like the deals might be on the large size.

I bought our turkey 2 weeks ago at the commissary here. I need a small one that will fit into my Easy Bake Belgian oven and I waited too long last year. Stony Brook (is that the brand—they make sausages and ground turkey, too) were on sale for $0.39 a pound. Dirt cheap!

We like a smaller turkey because they were recommended on some Food Network show years ago (I can't remember why, maybe they cook more evenly) and we can never find one under 18 lbs, so I'm looking forward to smaller turkeys this year

Consider getting your spices ASAP! All three of my local grocery stores are out of Pumpkin Pie Spice and Poultry Seasoning. Sage and Rosemary seem to be in rather short supply too. My fresh herbs didn't do well thru the summer with the heat and smoke from all the fires around

I checked our regular spices and ordered thanks to that report, but didn’t think about poultry spice so thank you for the reminder! Any other weird spices I might have forgotten?

Time is flying too fast. Our freezer is full snd no room for a turkey. We will be eating it down for the next two weeks and then hope to have room. Turkey breast have been selling out and hard to get. I saw lots of turkeys at Aldi maybe 3 weeks ago. I’m hoping there are some still available. It’s just the three of us and we do have a breast in the freezer but hoping to get a bird but like others I’m thinking 12 pounds or so vs the 20 pound we normally buy. If that’s all that’s available though we will just cook a larger bird and freeze leftovers.

My fresh herbs didn't do well thru the summer with the heat and smoke from all the fires around Pumpkin pie spice is cloves, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg and maybe allspice (depending on the recipe) so if you have those you can make your own. It's just measuring and stirring.

They countered on Sunday and we accepted the counter (they met us midway between our offer and their asking price which wasn't bad considering the price had already been dropped 18K from the original listing and we offered 17k less than their new lower price. Inspection is hopefully next week with a tentative closing shortly before Christmas

My husband is a meat manager for a grocery store. He laughed and said the turkeys are normal and will go on sale as usual (on the 5th, here).

I don't know about turkeys, but anyone know why Kroger had the large Dixie paper plates labeled at 14.99? Even Chinet isn't that expensive.

I think they will have a sale. I'm thinking that since most grocery stores put new ads out on Wednesdays, maybe they will have some sales starting then.
