I usually wait till after Thanksgiving but not this year. Dd and I took Halloween down the day after, and that same day we put up the tree. The day after that we put up all the outside lights. We're still fiddling with those because of course once it gets dark we see improvements that could be made. lol We were the first on the block and since then two more houses have followed our lead. This year has sucked so much that we wanted bright sparkly lights to cheer us up.

Unfortunately, and I am ashamed to say this, but Melania and I would probably get along when it comes to decorating for Christmas. It does not give me great joy. I hate clutter and I hate plastic. We'll be putting up a natural tree two weeks before the big day and taking it down the day after. In addition, I do decorate with natural twig wreaths and greenery and lights. But in moderation.

So our outdoor lights are up but not on. We have an agreement that Thanksgiving is the earliest we will turn the lights on. I really really want to get my stairway tree up. I have a small tree I put on the landing at the top of our stairs. I think everything may be up on Saturday after Thanksgiving instead of the following weekend like usual.

I put out a simple fall mantel banner and dining table centerpiece now that the kids aged out of Halloween decorating so won't put them away until Black Friday. So Christmas will be as usual this year.
What I have really noticed is the family buying Christmas presents way earlier than usual and spending a lot of time thinking about extra gifts this year.

we don't do outdoor lights and usually I wait until the 4th Sunday of Advent for the tree and christmas stuff (The Nativities usually come out for the 1st Sunday of Advent).
BUT we're potentially closing on a new house on Dec 15th - DH is a little gunshy because our last house purchase took 6+ months from offer to closing with the closing date constantly being pushed off so he doesn't want to pack or talk about a moving date or anything until we actually close. So if it goes through okay - I'll possibly be moving right before (or right after) Christmas. So I don't really want to pull out a bunch of holiday stuff. I'll probably do the Advent Wreath and then decide on a tree once we know timing.

If you're debating between going big or going small, just break a limb and the decision is made for you.
(I'm going small and now in the "whenever" camp)
Ho ho ho to all! 🎅🎄🤶<<<my decorations are up! Lol

Between yesterday and today, all my lights and assorted decorations (garlands on the front steps’ banisters) are out in front of our house and will come on at dusk. I have never put them up before Thanksgiving before. And I didn’t do much the past 2 years because of health issues. But I broke everything out of storage and took 2 days to put up everything we own, including stapling lights to outline our front door, etc. With so many people home because of COVID, and our school district just announced that the staged back-to-school that was supposed to start tomorrow has been called off, I figured we all could use extra holiday cheer. A number of other houses in our neighborhood have put up their lights already too, so I’m not alone. So, are you going to put your lights et al. up early this year? Or same as usual? Over the last week or so when I’m out in the evenings I’ve noticed a good number of homes in my neighborhood have lights up already. I love that everyone is leaning into trying to help cheer others up this year.

We created a little snow village in our front window this year.
Kids painted the houses white, liberally sprinkled the tops with clear super fine glitter, and set up village accessories on a snow blanket. Everything but the glitter, white paint, & snow blanket were bought at Dollar Tree.

I normally don't do anything Christmas until after Thanksgiving. I don't do big seasonal decorating for any holiday but Christmas.
But yesterday as I was out running errands, I found lightly glittered trees (bought three -- about 6", 8", and 10") along with gorgeous carved red birds. I made a centerpiece for the dining room table on a silver serving tray using narrow vintage tinsel garland (with that 'almost lost all its silvering' patina). It looks festive. I really like it.

I bought a pencil tree at Michaels last week when they were having a good sale, so I've already put that up. The rest of the Christmas stuff will go up after Thanksgiving. Me too, only mine is an Alpine tree from Amazon. It’s in the corner in the dining room and adds warmth and light that makes me smile. Big tree will go up after Thanksgiving in the living room.

I put my tree up and lights on it on Sunday. I haven't decorated the rest but I plan to this weekend.
I'm nervous Jeremy is going to back out of the outside decorations this year. I'm hoping he is not. We took down all our clips this summer so we could repaint our house. So it's going to be a much bigger job to put them back up now. But I've got my fingers crossed for outdoor decor.

Last year we caved and bought a fake tree, because DH's allergies to the real ones were becoming a problem. So before, we tended to be late decorators, because I liked to go cut down a tree on the weekend closest to my birthday on December 9th. Now, we can just haul it out of the basement whenever, so we'll wait until DS comes home from school on Friday, and maybe do it this weekend or the next after Thanksgiving. I've definitely been scaling back over the years, because I'm more into simplicity. So tree, mantel, and white lights around the windows in our kitchen and living room and which stay up until the spring equinox.

I've still got my Halloween decorations up... But they'll come down very soon (meant to do it last weekend) and I'll pop some twinkly lights up soon. We have a real tree and I like to make wreaths with cut offs from the garden, so I'll do that during December.

That is truly the spirit of the season, not the stuff (unless that brings you joy). Nothing is up inside my house yet, just the outside. We will get the tree up (fake tree) this coming weekend so it is up for Thanksgiving, instead of after. If you're debating between going big or going small, just break a limb and the decision is made for you. (I'm going small and now in the "whenever" camp) Ho ho ho to all! 🎅🎄🤶<<<my decorations are up! Lol I’m so sorry again about your broken clavicle! I hope that you are feeling better. It is a joke in our neighborhood about how big I go in our little townhouse front yard. Complete with laser projectors on the front of the house. I’m getting in a laser projector that projects Chanukah images (dreidels and menorahs) this week, so that will go out and my house will have those plus Christmas trees projected. 😜

I'm having the house painted so I won't be decorating this year. Normally I put most things up the weekend before Thanksgiving.

We are going tonight to get a new tree. We'll start decorating tomorrow night. That's a little early for me as I usually do it the weekend of Thanksgiving. This year I have two houses to do. My SO have been splitting time between my house and his so we are decorating both.
I can't wait, I'm ready for some holiday lights, music and cheer!!

We're putting our outside lights up before Thanksgiving, but that's only because that's when the company could get us in. Our inflatables and our inside stuff will probably be done Thanksgiving weekend. My husband insists on a real tree so we really can't put it up much earlier than that.

I've donated a lot of my decorations and kept only the things I love the most. I'm already there! I do like to do a little something different each year for Christmas. I pick a few things and leave the rest in the basement. The plan was to slowly throw away or donate a little at a time. You know, when school starts.
I may go all out this year and decorate in more than one room just because I need to look at something different.

I'm putting our tree up this week since DS is with us through Thanksgiving. It's the perfect time to take our picture in front of the tree for our photo greeting cards.
ETA: As far as decorations, I usually go all out with way too much stuff so I'm going to cut back some this year since no one will be visiting us during the holidays. The older I get, the harder it gets. When we moved up here 3+ years ago, I donated 6 boxes of Christmas decorations and still have way too much. I'll be donating again this year. I had kept things for sentimental value way too long and just had to let go of stuff that didn't speak to me any longer.

I have a new St. Bernard puppy that will look at my normal Christmas tree as his bone. Thank you for making me laugh! Awww......our doggies are elderly now, but I remember those puppy years!!!
Jun 27, 2014 21:48:49 GMT -6 PLurker said:If you're debating between going big or going small, just break a limb and the decision is made for you. Aww.....I'm sorry! I know how you feel---I had a broken arm for Halloween and then a broken rib for Christmas last year. Ugh, I HATED not decorating or doing much else. We created a little snow village in our front window this year. Little villages are my FAVORITE thing !!! So cozy with the snow and glowing lights in the windows. Thank you for inspiring me to at LEAST do that this year! I am HOPING the decorating mood hits me soon, because right now, anything Christmas-related depresses me. I usually LOVE all the decorations, the baking, etc...but I am soooo sad we won't be seeing our families. I need to get out of my funk and go watch some of my favorite you-tube crafters! There's a few that create the CUTEST little villages, and I already have most of the things they use. ! I love that you decorate for both holidays !!! I'll bet your neighbors get a lot of joy from it all. I donated 6 boxes of Christmas decorations and still have way too much. I'll be donating again this year. I had kept things for sentimental value way too long and just had to let go of stuff that didn't speak to me any longer. Girrrrllll....I am in your exact same spot !!! I want to donate, not only to clear out our attic (once and for all !!!!!!!) , but I love the thought of my former decors bringing other families some joy. I want to take them to an organization that gives them for free as opposed to a thrift store where people have to pay for them. I know it's going to be hard, because; just as you said, it's the sentimental value that makes me want to hang onto them. Ugh, I bought a GORGEOUS 7-foot tree a few years ago that was on clearance for 75% off. I went all out with pretty ribbon and Victorian-style glass ornaments. But that doesn't appeal to me anymore---I want to go smaller and simpler. Maybe I'll at least put up some of the smaller, fun trees I have. One is bulldog-themed, and one is all Barbie ornaments, wrapped at the bottom with tulle and white lights. Annnd, I have other small trees that go in the guest bathroom, the kitchen, etc. UGH---I forgot I had all of these trees until I typed this out !!!!!!

I went BIG this year, DH and I put up everything yesterday. I spent a ton of money buying new stuff and it looks like the Hallmark Channel in here. I'M IN LOVE. I have three trees up. And yes I watched The Hallmark Channel while I decorated.
I fell off a stool yesterday hanging some stuff and have a big bruise on my arm and some smaller ones, but didn't break a hip so all is well. I felt kind of foolish and rather old though!
The outside could use MORE MORE MORE but it's such a pain to do, so I think I'll have to be content with garlands and a giant wreath and deer and potted trees and lights on the porch. What I really want is Christmas Vacation. I guess I could hire someone!

I don't ever put up Christmas before Thanksgiving! My DIL died about 4 months ago and every time I even think about Christmas I cry. I wasn't even sure I was going to do Christmas this year. Well we painted the porch this past week-end and I was thinking how good it would look with the Christmas stuff up. So we put the lights up! I think I'm going to put up at least the tree too. Things are just so different this year.
