Last night, my husband and I braved Costco (it wasn't so bad at 7:30 pm) and we paid at the cashier-less checkout lane. It had a recorded voice talking to us and thanked us for "visiting Costco." And the voice pronounced "Costco" so differently than we do.
So, how do YOU pronounce it? (I literally have never heard it pronounced this way.)

Cost-co. Or Cosco if we’re being lazy.

I'm from Michigan and we lose the T altogether. Cahsco.

Now that I say it out loud, I seem to drop the T altogether as in Cahsco.

Cost-co. Or Cosco if we’re being lazy. And because I'm avoiding work and putzing around I called my local Costco to hear how they pronounce it on the recording.

I wish I could get a voice recording. I'm having a hard time hearing it any way but how it is.

Honestly, I'm not sure how "Cahst-co" Is it an AH like you're from Boston and ordered ChowDAH. Is it the AH sound like when you have an ahnt instead of an ant?
I will say, sometimes those electronic voices don't know phonics. The bus I used to take goes down a street named Rosa. Emphasis on Ro, short a sound at the end, like someone named Rosa. The electronic bus voice always called it Rosay, (like rose wine if I could put a mark on the E).

I’m associating both of the pronunciations in the poll as sounding like a heavy New England accent.

Neither of those options. I pronounce it the way it’s spelled, COST-co. Or if my sister and her DH have been around for a while, we call it The Costco, LOL.

Don't drop the T and there is no 'aw' or 'ah' sound. Those pronunciations sound more Northern or New England to me. If the word had 'ing' on the end, then being the good Southerner that I am, that 'g' would be dropped in a heartbeat!

So interesting. We say "Cosco" up here (and to me that sounds like "cahsco"). The recording said "cost-co" with an "aw" sound in the cost and I had never heard it pronounced like that.
And now I'm realizing that people say "cost" differently so it sounds like regional accents at play.

With my lazy west coast accent, Cost-co, Cahst-co and Cawst-co would all sound the same (people don't seem to drop the T here). Whenever there are those things like how do you pronounce merry/marry/Mary and people pronounce those words differently, it's always a surprise lol

Those three sound very different to me so therein lies the problem, I guess!

I don't know what the difference is between "aw" and "ah"....to me they'd be the same. And anyway, I don't think I really pronounce the "t"... it's more like "cos-co" -- "cos" rhymes with "toss" and "co" rhymes with "no".

Since Costco is a WA-based company, I’m guessing the way it’s pronounced on the recording is the way we say it out here.

I was the lady studying the sell by dates on the pumpkin pies lol. That's so wild. We were there from 7:30ish to 8 and then went to Stew's. Both were so empty and nice to shop in!

I always feel like such a hick on these pronunciation threads! I can't tell if I'm saying CAWsco or CAHsco.... But I'm certain the "T" doesn't get said.
